As I said in my last post, I wasn’t about to pay over $300 for 50 letterpress STDs—as much as my paper-loving self was dying to.
I used the magical Adobe Illustrator CS5 to design a basic floral and lace STD, using free vector graphics found online. GASP—we didn’t use any e-photos! There is a huge trend goin’ on right now that STDs must contain a very cute engagement-shoot photo. We aren’t taking our engagement photos until much, much closer to the wedding—so we were a bit SOL on that one. We liked the basic non-photo design better anyhow! My favourite part is the back (ha!):

Ms. Sloth nominated Ms. Stripes’ Brooch Bouquet DIY as her post for the helpful series, because she used it to make her own brooch bouquet. Ms. Sloth says, “I’d seen a lot of other tutorials, but Stripes’ was the simplest.”

Again- for Sloth. And any other lovelies out there who wanna continue their extreme arm toning regime on their wedding day. You’re hardcore. Enjoy the tutorial kids!
PREP:
I already had a fairly sizable collection of brooches from my awesome adopted grandma, and the rest I found in thrift stores, on eBay, and even borrowed one from the awesome Mrs. Nachos!

Gather/Edit your brooches. I used around 50!

It’s difficult planning a wedding in uncertain economic times. Vendors are going out of business and deposits are unfortunately being lost. This past fall, my brother was married at one of Southern Massachusetts’ most popular venues, The Hawthorne Country Club. I can’t tell you how many weddings I’ve attended there. We actually first met our fabulous DJ at a Hawthorne wedding. It’s a beautiful venue and has some of the most reasonable prices in the area. It’s by far the absolute best bang for your buck.

Unfortunately, a little while after my brother’s wedding, the Hawthorne announced it was closing its doors after 40 years. Unless they could find another buyer for the property, they would have to be forced into foreclosure. Everyone locally was mourning the loss of such a great venue. They literally had brides booking two years in advance, how could they go out of business?

After I’d been engaged for a total of three days, stress and tears had already happened. I’m hoping that was the last of the stress and tears I’ll see for a long time. Don’t worry—I’m pretty sure I’m not turning into a Bridezilla. I think I cried for a legitimate reason (oh, is that what they all say?). See, the thing is, Mr. Opossum and I really want to get married soon. I know that most people are content with a year (or more!) long engagement, but hey, we aren’t most people. We’ve been dating for seven years, have never been more sure of anything, and are ready to get this show on the road!
And besides all of those reasons (which I think are enough), we’re “old fashioned,” so in order for us to start officially sharing a home we want to be officially tied to each other as husband and wife. I plan on starting grad school in the fall, and the most economical and logical way to do it is to bring Mr. Opossum, as my hubby, with me.
Since we got engaged in the middle of fall, that left us with three seasons to chose from. First, winter, which was so soon that it would have been practically impossible. Even I, armed with my huge portfolio of wedding ideas, couldn’t pull that off in time. So that left us with spring and summer. I’m sure everyone knows this, but Florida is blistering hot in the summer. Mr. Opossum was in his brother’s wedding in July and made me promise he would never have to wear a tux in July again. So July was out. Another Florida summer weather phenomenon is rain (and lots of it!). The weather being so unpredictable is something I’m not sure I’m ready to deal with. My best friend got married this past summer and it rained…and she totally kept her cool (you can’t even tell in her gorgeous pictures), but I do not have her composure or patience.
See? No rain here!

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
When we arrived at the golf course, Mr Teaspoon and I were totally over photos and just wanted to join our guests at cocktail hour, but our photographer wanted us to get some shots on the course. I did get a little grumpy when I saw of all our guests inside and I wasn’t allowed to go in. Not to worry, I cheered up immensely when we got in the golf buggies! It was all hands on deck across the gravel in the carpark. I walked about two steps and I swear half the train of my dress ripped. The girls freaked out, and jumped on board. In the end, I have inspected my dress post-wedding and there doesn’t seem to be a single rip that I can find.
Favors pretty much always look the same around my neck of the woods. It’s some type of candy wrapped up in some kind of fabric. It’s a great choice, but it’s just not us. So I started to do some soul-searching as to what I wanted our favor to be.
Mr. D voted for something practical (this is coming from the man who once bought me a comforter for my birthday!). When I asked him to elaborate he said maybe we could do bottle openers or beer coozies. Yes, I come from a population of perdy hard beer drinkers so Mr. D wanted to help them open them or keep them cool. I wasn’t so down with that. I mean these are cute and all:

but just not what I was looking for.
Then I started considering something eco-friendly.

When I last left you, I was armed with my doodles and heading off to visit some vendors who might be able to help me with our paper products. As fun as it might have been, I did not think that I had either the talent or tools (no Cricut or Gocco for this girl) or time to conquer them on my own!
I started with a trip to the new Paper Source store in Center City on my walk home (dangerous…dangerous, I tell you).

When I walked in, there was only 1 employee in the store. She was helping a customer with thank you notes, so I perused the invitation books and waited. As I was waiting, a number of other customers came in, so I maintained my spot but tried to catch the employee’s eye so that I would be helped next. About 10–15 minutes had passed at this point. No other employees had surfaced. and although it was getting a little frustrating, I was still hanging in there. There were a lot of pretty things to look at, after all.

Mrs. Meerkat nominates Mrs. Pug’s post on what a wedding timeline looks like if you’re not including dancing in the day. It’s a great reference for brides who may not be getting married at night, or simply don’t want to include a dance floor at their wedding!
~~~
As I’m waiting to start my recaps, I just wanted to share a few things…
Chances are at some point you will create a day-of timeline for the wedding, which may expand into a larger timeline for the overall weekend, and include important information like important cellphone numbers that will be distributed to key people.
So not mine but isn’t this pretty?
But I’m talking about something more hardcore than the above, with minute timing and tons of details, like that of Mrs. Daffodil.
OK. I admit it. I am in love with Martha Stewart. I’m pretty sure “tablescape” is a made-up word, and that designing one can make brides and housewives around the world jump with excitement. And I’m pretty sure that designing a beautiful tablescape would make Martha proud.
But, what does it mean? Well, I couldn’t find the official Webster’s definition of tablescape, but I did find the Urban Dictionary defintion here:
Designing a dining table (for a dinner party) with useless, cheap and tacky knicknacks, usually with some kind of lame-assed theme. And usually they are nowhere as inexpensive as she likes to claim. Allegedly created by Food Network hack Sandra “Semi-Homemade” Lee.
Well, our tablescapes hopefully won’t include useless or tacky knicknacks, but hopefully they will include some cheap ones! As I told you all in a previous post, we booked the amazing Lougheed House, and one of the reasons we loved it so much…is because there won’t be a huge need for decorations. We won’t need to have amazing tablescapes because the ornate design of the house won’t need it. I mean, did you see the ceilings?! I want those ceilings in my apartment.
But…we do want a “lame-assed theme.” That is precisely why we booked Lougheed (the fact that Chiavari chairs are included may have persuaded me…just a little)! We wanted the ever-so-popular vintage-themed wedding. More specifically, I was picturing our “theme” to look like this:
Before I knew it, the day had flown by and it was time to make our departure. The boys handed out my little DIY send off flags, and Mr. Lion and I headed towards the exit.
Mr. Opossum proposed on a typical Sunday. I hadn’t showered yet (we were planning on going to the gym later that afternoon), and I had been begging him to take me to get some frozen yogurt. We stopped at the ATM (because Mr. Opossum needed cash for a “surprise”) and headed over to get frozen yogurt.
While I was getting out of the car Mr. Opossum was messing with something in the back seat. I asked him what he was doing, and he said he was fixing a bag of clothes that had tipped over. He was taking too long for my taste, so I told him I was going inside because I needed my yogurt… Little did I know that he was trying to get my ring out of a bag and two boxes and into his pocket without me noticing.
After we ate our frozen yogurt we headed off on our drive. He had a completely different destination in mind (he was planning on proposing to me at this awesome historic plantation in neighboring Thomasville), but I asked him to take me into this little gated neighborhood out in the boondocks. After an unsuccessful first try at sneaking through the gate, we followed a truck into the neighborhood and drove around looking for houses (a favorite pastime of ours) until we found a sign that said “Lake House.”
We followed a little gravel road down to this pretty little spot by the lake. There is this cute little building sitting in the center surrounded by tons of trees and a really great view of the water.
While planning our wedding, I came up with some pretty good ideas and some, um, not-so-good ideas. Harebrained ideas. Or, as Mama Warbler likes to call them, Lucy-you’ve-got-some-’splaining-to-do ideas. Yes, I STILL love Lucy!
First of all, you should know that the Warblers don’t sing or dance.
OK, these Warblers do. Heeeey Blaine.
I’m talking about Mr. Warbs and myself, of course. With the exception of bad karaoke and singing in the shower, we are not musically gifted.
Time to get to what was/is probably my favorite part of the wedding-planning process—paper products!!
I love paper. I have a ridiculous collection of stationery (including way too many thank you notes), and if you put me anywhere near a Paper Source or Papyrus, I’m guaranteed to walk away a little lighter in the wallet.
Last Christmas I think I sent over 100 holiday cards. (Imagine the bill at Papyrus.)
So clearly the wedding would be no exception. Before choosing anyone to help with the execution, we had to get our design ideas clear.
We decided to have our wedding brand of “modern elegance” define our paper choices.
