Apologies for the radio silence, hive! I have been enjoying lots of family, food, and relaxing this past week—I haven’t had this much time to myself in ages. I was even able to read a bit and finish a book I started six months ago. Yes, it’s been that long. But I digress—hello, again, and I hope you all had and are continuing to have fabulous holidays!
Our pussycat(s) does not seem to enjoy the holidays as much as I do.
So anyway, way back when I first started my little wedding blog (coughforthesolepurposeofWeddingbeecough), I had 732 days until the wedding. Seven hundred thirty two. It felt like it would never come; I dreamed of the day I could even say our wedding was next year, much less saying it’s less than six months away. Because now? It is. And in a few short days, I can say our wedding is this year.

Mrs. Lamb nominates Mrs. Beagle’s post on making her own veil, and referred to it when making her own.

When I started looking for veil inspiration, I wasn’t sure what I really wanted. I had tried on a few veils while dress shopping, but nothing really caught my eye (and at $$$, I wasn’t really into buying a veil, anyways). While I was shopping at Jo-Ann’s one afternoon, I decided to stop by the pattern section to look for veils. It turned out that the patterns were on sale for $1.99, and I ended up finding one that I thought looked okay.
“F” is the pattern I decided to use, minus the bow. I also decided I wanted a two-tiered veil instead of just one-tier, and that I wanted to add lace trim. Before I go into the details of sewing a veil, this is a list of supplies I bought (from Jo-Ann’s, all on sale):

One of the first things I did while starting this “sprint” of a five-month wedding-planning process was take care of getting my dress. I knew that it would set the tone for the whole event and that I needed to get it ordered early enough to get here in time for the big day…
At that point I hadn’t really thought too in depth about what I wanted Mr. Opossum to wear. In fact, I thought about what my sister and mom were wearing, the flowers, the DJ, the decor, and the venue all well before I gave any consideration to what the “look” for the guys was going to be.
When I got a call from Men’s Wearhouse telling me they could give me 50% off of a suit purchase if I made an appointment to meet with them, I was forced to think about it.
I knew I wanted casual. I knew I wanted something spring-weather appropriate. And I knew I wanted to buy him a suit. I spent $460 on a dress I will only wear once. Seems totally fair that we should spend a decent amount of money on a suit for Mr. Opossum that he will likely wear many times in his lifetime, right? I think so.
After discussing all of our requirements, I kept picking images like this:

“Embrace the season with wedding favors that are perfectly suited for spring! Adorable AND affordable.”
Our wedding favors were one of the first decisions we made in planning the wedding. We both fully agreed and loved this idea. Before I reveal it though, I need to say this.
Alright, are you ready for this?

Mrs. Prairie Dog nominates Mrs. Rainbow’s amazing makeup tutorials for the Weddingbee Helpful Series. Mrs. PD says, “I nominate Mrs. Rainbow’s makeup tutorials, particularly since my skin and I are not BFF. Though I didn’t do my own makeup for my wedding, I’ve used the tips for everyday wear. And yes, I tried the chafing gel on my face, and it is awesome. Love ya, Rainbow. Thanks for making my check-out process at CVS cheaper AND more awkward.

Miss Rainbow here, reporting for duty.
It’s tutorial time, yet again! We’ve talked lashes, we’ve talked brows, and now it’s all about the face. I’m not going to go on and on about how important a smooth canvas is, but suffice it to say—it is, so take care of your skin. Now, back to the makeup! I’m going to teach you a few insider tips and tricks so you’ll have the most fabulous face in all the land. Enough chit chat; let’s get started.

First and foremost, start with a clean face (please excuse my no makeup face). After I wash my face, I always use toner. Biore Triple Action something or other. It’s inexpensive and works amazingly. It always gets off whatever make-up/dirt/oil that washing may have left behind.

I never attempted to write about our photographer before. As a blogger, I digest thousands of photos each evening, as I flip through the posts from my favorite blogs. With my feet in two blogging worlds, wedding and design, I’m keeping track of hundreds of feeds with my blog reader. I love photography. Photography is so important to me that I felt like a post about it deserved a lot of my time. Having taken a few days off around the holidays, I now feel as though I can write about this aspect of our wedding.

You’d think that someone who loves photography would have launched an exhaustive search of portfolios, interviewed a dozen photographers, and created an elaborate assessment tool before picking a vendor. I like to say that I made up my mind in a pizza parlor…but it’s not entirely true.

Hey there, remember me? Miss Warbler? Yeah, it’s been a while. Sorry for not keeping in touch. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy our time together, I’ve just been…busy. You know, wedding planning and all. Don’t take it personal. It’s not you, it’s me.
It’s been a while hive, but I promise I haven’t been sitting on my ass this whole time. Wedding projects (and mishaps) will be shared in due time!
Over the holiday break, I had a couple of makeup trials. The first trial was…not good. There’s no other way to put it. But I guess it was my fault. In an effort to try and save some money, I went to the mall and tried out a makeup artist at a department store. I figured that it might be cheaper and if the bridal party had to drive to the mall the day of the wedding, than it would be worth it to save a little cash. It’s what I did for prom, so why couldn’t I do that for the wedding too? Yeah, you can go ahead and file that one under harebrained ideas.
Even though I didn’t have an appointment and it was the weekend before Christmas, I was helped right away. I took bridesmaid E with me to get her opinion on the makeup. The whole time I sat in the chair, the MUA wouldn’t let me see my face so all I could go off of were E’s facial expressions which were pretty amusing. Except that she was making them at my face. I don’t usually wear a lot of makeup, but expected to probably wear a medium coverage for the wedding. However, I was a little worried when the MUA artists put on generous amounts of liquid foundation, two different powder foundations, concealer and a shimmer setting powder. How in the hell is that medium coverage? Bridesmaid E snapped a photo of the end result.

Three years have come and gone, and it’s always fun to have an excuse to look back on our wedding pictures! Here are 10 images from our wedding, selected by a random number generator. I’m no stranger around the hive, so it’s hardly appropriate to update you all on what I’ve been up to since our wedding…you can find me here at Weddingbee every day, editing it up!

This photo came from our first look. The first look concept wasn’t explained in detail to Mr. Penguin so he thought the whole thing was goofy (plus, we had already seen each other arriving at the winery about an hour before). This photo reminds me how much hair was growing out of my head at the time of our wedding. I’ve since gone through two rounds of significant hair loss (stress! Going off birth control! Getting old!) but I do miss having a full head of hair that can sustain a longer haircut!

During all four years of high school, I was lucky enough to be part of the competition dance team. I loved almost everything about it. I got to spend my afternoon exercising and training with a fantastic group of girls; I was part of an elite team, and I had special uniforms and T-shirts to prove it.

Along with pirouettes and fun costumes came makeup. Lots and LOTS of stage makeup. Makeup that would make our eyes visible from the football field. If I hated anything about being on dance team it was caking that makeup on before any performance. It. Just. Sucked.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you how to wash. These are bridal shower tips.
As I mentioned, I am a two shower bride. The next shower is in my hometown in upstate NY in March, so I have some time to prepare. And there are some things I need to change adjust for the next time around.
I’m not going to share things that I knew before (and you likely do too)—like ensure you share with everyone who the gift is from when opening it, have someone keep track of who gives you what gift (in case cards get replaced), greet all your guests, thank your hostess(es) at the end publicly, etc. etc.
These tips are some that I haven’t seen shared around these parts (not that they haven’t been…). To make my point, I’m going to be sharing the good, the bad and even some ugly with you all. Get ready.

Tip #1: Wear something comfortable / long enough
I’m going to get real with you right away, ladies. Sitting and opening presents can be awkward.

Mrs. Spaniel nominates Mrs. Emerald’s helpful post on creating her ceremony program booklets. Mrs. Spaniel says, “I didn’t end up doing anything like Mrs. Emerald’s programs, but I was really inspired by her post on them. I thought the vellum pages and photographs was such an amazing idea, and I definitely would have done something like that if I weren’t already DIYed out.”

Because blood, sweat and tears went into this baby (yes, there was a teensy bit of blood from a needle prick or 2!). I present to you, my programs!

The cover: The programs are 4.25″ x 5.5″ (an 8.5″ x 11″ cut down in half, and folded) printed on Pearl White metallic card stock from Paperandmore, and rounded corners (that was Mr.E’s job!) Each cover is hand embossed in gold with our monogram. I ordered a custom stamp with our monogram from Impress, and the quality and detailing is fab!! I was very insistent on designing this particular size program because I wanted something small that would fit into a ladies purse, hence, they better take these with them, hehe!!

Bossyboots and I have been planning our wedding from afar: 965 miles worth of afar, if you want to be exact about it. Things have been fairly easy up to this point, mainly because we have been booking people that we totally trust, with longstanding professional reputations. We haven’t been bitten in the booty yet with this methodology, and hopefully our not-horribly-stressful wedding planning life will continue. We’re busy, but just because weddings are a lot of work, not because we’ve had any unprofessional vendors. We’ve really been incredibly happy so far with everyone we’ve booked.
*I realize I’ve now jinxed myself, but we’ll just move on.*
Anyway, there are just a few things that we can’t do for our Dallas wedding from Chicago, mainly food-based. We also had never met our florist or DJ. And we can’t choose our wedding menu without tasting all of the available options first. I mean, come on. I never miss a chance to stuff my face.
So, we scheduled a wedding trip, with 12,000 vendor meetings, all for the purpose of nailing this wedding down. And so I could stuff my face.

Today I want to talk a little about those other wedding dresses. You know, the ones you wear to the shower, to the bachelorette party, to the rehearsal dinner, to the dinner that first night on your honeymoon. I love to wear dresses, so I had a great time shopping for ones for these occasions. In fact, I might have had more fun on these shopping trips than I did when looking for my actual wedding dress!
The first dress I found was for the rehearsal dinner. I wanted to wear something “bride-like,” but not necessarily bridal, if you get my incredibly fuzzy distinction. I ended up finding a silk-blend dress from Banana Republic in a shade of ivory. It was on sale, so I bought it in September for $38 and change. I am pairing it with a J.Crew cardigan, which I also got on sale. I may use it again with my wedding dress (after our Vegas reception, during our Milwaukee party). I’m also wearing my grandmother’s graduated pearl necklace. On my feet are my Kate Spade Ollie flats.
