Our invitations have now made it to most of their destinations. Faster than expected, even: we got a text from Mr. Mole’s sister the day after I dropped them in the mail. So now it’s time that they make it to the hive’s computer screens! My warning is that there are lots and lots of photos ahead. The coral envelopes are our Vegas invitations; the sage envelopes are our Milwaukee invitations.

It was a random Thursday afternoon. Mr. Dalmatian had come home for a few hours between his classes. I was supposed to be studying for my nursing boards. Mr. Dalmatian was supposed to be writing a paper that was due the next day. Instead, we were watching Hulu, snacking on cookie dough, and cuddling with Echo. Oops!

| Can you blame me for being distracted by this cuteness? |
When my phone rang and I saw it was from an unknown number, I let out a little groan. Have I mentioned I hate talking to strangers on the phone? Ordinarily, I would have pretended to miss the call and hoped they left a voicemail, but not this time. You see, 1) I was in the process of applying to jobs and figured it could be a potential employer and 2) whenever Mr. D is there he makes me answer the phone to try to help me get over my phone-phobia. He’s always making me a better person, though sometimes I drag my feet kicking and screaming. Oops!
I am awfully glad he made me answer this phone call though.

Planning a wedding isn’t easy. Let’s face it, a lot of feelings come out and relationships (and wallets) are strained during this otherwise joyous process. Sometimes this comes from tough relationships between daughters and their mothers.
I can say, now nine months in, that my mom and I are no worse for the wear despite the ups and downs that have come before us. I’m not going deep on you right now, though. Instead, I wanted to talk about how my mom’s excitement and involvement in our wedding planning has brought us closer together. You heard how she helped secure our venue, but coming up next is her best effort yet.
Granted, I am biased, but I wanted to share with you the details of our party as they may serve as great inspiration for any events you may be hosting.
To celebrate our engagement, over Easter, my mom invited family and friends north for a little soiree. I knew she was taking it to the next level when I saw this.

That’s right, my mom made envelope liners!
Mr. Unicycle had a good laugh when he saw “Moo Cards” on our wedding to-do list, but Vistaprint got the last laugh because I ended up just ordering 250 business cards through them FO’ FREE. Let me back up. I’d seen several other bees use mini Moo cards featuring engagement pics that direct guests to a public Flickr account where they can share pictures they take at their wedding. I love this idea because I know I’ll be waiting on pins and needles for our pro pics to come back, so having guest photos all in one place = winning.

My first step was to create a Flickr account. I ended up first creating a Yahoo account, since Flickr is through Yahoo. I didn’t want to go through my existing Yahoo account because then I’d have to give guests my real password. And it’s kind of an embarrassing password. It involves a certain man with Jheri curls. We debated whether to upgrade to a pro account or not and eventually decided…(drum roll please)…to wait until we get closer to the wedding to actually make a decision. Then I dabbled in Picnik for the first time ever and came up with an overly cutesy design:

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
Remember when I shared my save-the-date indecision? I was torn between the magnet and the postcard. I pained over the decision, worrying that postcards might get lost in the shuffle. Y’all gave me some great feedback and eased my fears. When our engagement-session photo disk came in, I went straight to work creating four different postcard-design options and threw in one magnet design for good measure. Mr. Hawk and I reviewed them, and I thought we had it settled… I was wrong.
The next morning I told Mr. Hawk that I was planning on submitting my order that day in case he had any last-minute input. (Of course he did. Why did I open my mouth?) He was suddenly concerned about the postcards. Would they get lost? Would people chuck them? He thought magnets were definitely the way to go. I was flabbergasted. I had brought up these concerns not only on the blog, but verbally. To him. Personally. More than once. (Does anyone else feel like sometimes they must be talking to a wall?) I had bookmarked several options that I liked before, but decided to do a last-minute Etsy search. I came across a couple designs that really caught my eye by Sunshine Greeting Card Co.
I loved the idea of revisiting our wedding day with a random pick of pictures. Here is a random snapshot of the Elephant Wedding starting off with our first look. Not the prettiest of faces, but it shows how emotional I was to see Mr. E for the first time on our wedding day.

As a child, I dressed up a lot. Probably too much. I don’t remember owning jeans until fifth grade, and that first pair had flowers painted on them. I sometimes wish I had more play clothes, but I’m thankful that I had pretty dresses as a little girl. I even had a gig as a “Polly Flinders girl” at Bamburgers (now Macy’s) when I was in kindergarten.

I am really looking forward to seeing children all dressed up in our wedding. I know many people say children in weddings are distracting and there was a time when I agreed, but having nieces and nephews changed my perspective. I am all smiles when I see kids totter down the aisle at a wedding. I’m thankful that, between us, we have a gaggle of children in our families. We invited them all to be in our bridal party.
Earlier this week I came home to find a package on my front doorstep. I didn’t remember ordering anything, so I suspiciously brought it inside. As I began to open it, I noticed an iconic blue color staring back at me.
Tiffany’s? Someone must be playing a joke on us. How did they find a box that perfectly matches Tiffany’s?
I then removed the ribbon and opened the enclosed card. My eyes laid upon this fun goodness:

In between my first dress fitting and bachelorette party, (which I’ll post about next!), this past Saturday, I was able to squeeze in my makeup trial.
I wear makeup every day so I’m not afraid of going for a more dramatic look for the wedding. Bare Minerals is my current choice for foundation and concealer, but thanks to you smart and informed peoples here on the Hive, I learned that this type of makeup does not photograph well. Apparently it reflects the light and can make you look like a grease face. Yeah - that doesn’t sound very bridal to me!
After learning this tidbit of info, I knew airbrush was the direction I wanted to go. I’ve never worn airbrush makeup, but my FSIL did for her wedding and she looked radiant.
My makeup artist, Anjelica, asked that I bring pictures of makeup looks that I liked. Pinterest to the rescue again!

Exactly one year ago today, Mr. Warbs got down on one knee in our bathroom and scared the crap out of me. I know that’s not a very eloquent sentence, but that’s what happened! Since then the weeks and months have seriously flown by like nothing. Here we are a year later and it all still feels so new. Sure, I’m not the clueless bride who clung religiously to bridal magazines anymore, but I’m far from being a pro. I still have trouble getting used to saying “fiance” and occasionally will call Mr. Warbs my boyfriend. Whoops! Trust me, I get the super awkward look every time.
There have been a few changes, though. We’ve become closer to each others’ respective families. My sisters and my mom have always loved Mr. Warbs, but it’s even more amazing that my nieces and cousins love him as well. If I go to a family function or dinner without him, they genuinely miss him. And since I know my family, I know they’re not just being polite. On the flip side, I simply adore his parents. They are the sweetest couple I’ve ever met. I can tell that Mr. Warbs’ definitely gets his caring and respectfulness from his dad. I’ve never seen a man more devoted to his wife’s every need. My future looks good on that front! My MIL is also a true gem. From the beginning of our relationship, she treated me like her daughter and has been very protective of me. When a car mechanic tried to screw me over on a deal, she yelled, “No one is gonna [expletive] with my daughter!” Yeah, I hope to never get on her bad side.

No, not this.

I wish I was talking about the Disneyland attraction, because colors are hard y’all (so hard that I’m apparently speaking Southern now). When researching colors, it felt like every bride had it wrapped up moments after their engagement. They used fancy words and had colors like “sage” and “aubergine.” To me, sage goes in stuffing…and aubergine sounds like an old fashioned name. I hope that, by admitting this, they don’t revoke my bride card.
By realizing my color inabilities and naivete, I made Mr. Turkey sit down with me and give me his thoughts on colors. It may have taken some homemade hummus to bribe him.
We weren’t originally going to have a wedding website. What did we need one for? Ohhhh, so people could find our registry? Did someone say…presents? In that case, we definitely needed a website. When we got closer to sending out our save the dates, I looked into free wedding-website templates through The Knot and the like, assuming I’d just find a template that was plain yellow and call it a day. I didn’t necessarily want or need something extraordinarily pretty or well designed. But I thought it would be nice to have the website match the wedding color scheme, at lease a tiny bit. After scrolling through template after template of swirly designs, beach backdrops, and flowery patterns, I stopped looking. What was the point of putting so much effort into making the save the dates match our color scheme if our website (our other first impression) was just going to have some random firefly motif on it? And that’s when I discovered Google Sites. (I swear I’m not being sponsored by Google. Why would they care about me anyway?)

That being said, Google truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
Google Sites is actually up on the Google menu along with Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Reader, the other loves of my life. Go look, I swear it’s there! It’s basically a total n00b version of creating your own website from scratch. You don’t have to know anything about HTML (though you can edit it if you’re so inclined) and you can just use their page templates. The best part? I could customize the colors (yay, yellow!) and also upload photos to use as my background (yay, polka dots!). Wanna see the home page?
