We all know brides get to be pampered throughout their engagement, but what about their friends? Yes, their guests are treated to a fabulous wedding (and often, welcome bags), but what about the other events?
As a bridesmaid, while prepping for the bride-to-be’s bachelorette weekend at the beach, I decided to put together some fun goodies for the entourage.

The first project was to make personalized cups for each of the attendees. I used plastic martini glasses purchased from Party City and a simple Sharpie. Each glass had the girl’s name + “C___’s Bachelorette 2010″ around the base.

As you’ll probably be photographed a lot this holiday season, this helpful post comes at a great time! Mrs. Socks nominates Ms. Hot Wings’ post on how to look flattering in pictures by making triangles.
~~~
Now, let’s talk about adding visual interest to a picture. I learned this trick in my high school photography class. When in doubt, make triangles. Yes, triangles. You’ll hear Tyra Banks say to create shapes with your body. Yes, this is true. Shapes are good. But the best shape of them all for photography is the triangle. All types of triangles… oblong, obtuse, equilateral, right triangle. In these images, they’re basically all created equal in my humble opinion. Again, I’m no expert. Did you notice I referenced my high school photography class? Yup… that’s all, folks. But here are some visually interesting pictures where triangles stand out. Can you count the number of triangles in each?
Left: Do you see the triangles created in the photo? Right: Check out her arms and her leg.
I love this photo. Her body is creating all sorts of triangles here. How many triangles can you count in this picture?
Weddings sure can be expensive sometimes. The Funnel Cake wedding, as you might be able to tell from our planning, was not easy on the bank either. So what did that mean for *my* personal budget?
Well… just the act of getting married civilly in Switzerland changed my financial situation for the worse. In 2010 I lost 11% of my annual income when I switched to my new married tax status. 11%! The change was less of a shock for Mr. Funnel Cake, who as a Swiss citizen already “enjoyed” a much higher tax rate than foreigners here. (Don’t even try to make sense of that.)
With the loss of my income to the tax man, I also was disturbed to learn at the beginning of 2011 that as a citizen-level taxpayer you are supposed to pay your Swiss taxes for the year before you earn that money. So as this year began, I scrambled to gather my funds together to pay the upcoming taxes I would owe on money that I would be earning this year. Instantly I missed my monthly taxes I’d enjoyed as a single foreigner! Mr. Funnel Cake was used to this method, so of course he was all set to pay his part of the taxes. Hmmph.
It was this awful tax change that stopped my savings dead in its tracks.
“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
Just before Thanksgiving, I mailed our save the date envelopes to the woman who was going to address them. I had just come off of a string of business trips and my busy season at work had started. My original intention was to learn calligraphy myself, but there didn’t seem to be enough time in the day for practicing, let alone actually writing out all the addresses of our guests. This was a project I had to outsource. Luckily, I had put the addresses of our friends and family into a spreadsheet last year when we sent out Christmas cards. I merged the addresses into the correct format, printed the document out, and our package was ready to go.
I found our calligrapher, Jasmine Lee, through Weddingbee. Mrs. Peach has a friend who worked with her a while back and was very happy. The comments on Mrs. Peach’s blog post were all positive, too. We loved that she was able to use a modern style on our Save the Dates. Our design doesn’t really call for a super traditional font.
Wow, Christmas is this weekend. Ya know, in case you didn’t know. (That’s me, being sarcastic.) I’m quite sure the insanity at the malls and grocery stores have been a constant reminder to you, as well as the incessant jewelry commercials that have graced the TV.
Not only is Christmas on Sunday, but it is also Mr. Buck’s and my one year mark of being engaged. Or in more technical terms, our engageaversary. OK never mind, that’s not technical at all. You get what I mean.
I distinctly remember last Christmas thinking, “wow, we are going to have another whole Christmas before the wedding. This is going to be torture having such a long engagement.” Then BAM, it’s already here again.
I can’t help but think how quickly time moves.
OK, girls—I’ve made you wait for three whole posts to hear the final verdict! I told you last time that we found Perfect Day Ventures on Kijiji and liked what we saw on the website. We arranged to meet with the very sweet owner, Louise Muller, at a nearby Starbucks.
We were pretty much sold in the first 10 minutes of the meeting. We kept giving each other looks like “OK, we’re booking her!” throughout the meeting. (Don’t you love those looks where you know what your partner is thinking without saying a word?!) Louise was so professional and well put together, and was genuinely interested in our wedding. She had a strategic plan for wedding coordination, and her DOC services were actually more like MOC services. This was a big plus with Fiancee Eagle.
So: We DID book Louise the very next morning, and Fiancee Eagle was so relieved—bridal pressure diverted! And I can add more DIY projects without getting the side eye.
With our Perfect Day Ventures package, we got a lot of services! For under $1,000, we get:
I know that flowers tend to just die after the wedding (which totally stinks) and that a lot of people consider them a waste of money…but flowers are one of my favorite things about weddings, and they are something I’m willing to put a little bit of money into. I mean, when else are you going to have an excuse to carry around a gorgeous bouquet all day!?
The florist I’m meeting with was highly recommended to me by a friend, and I can’t wait to see what kind of work he’ll be able to do for me on our very limited budget. Luckily, my favorite centerpieces include lots of greenery and filler, so that should help us stay within budget and still have gorgeous flowers!
Because the venue has very dark stained wood paneling and nice, neutral beige walls, we have decided to stick with a very natural color palate for the flowers and the wedding.
Here is some of the inspiration I showed the florist…
I love the shape of this arrangement.
I’m hoping our centerpieces will have the fullness and texture of this centerpiece…minus the pink! I promised Mr. Opossum we would not have a super girly wedding.
The yearly bee ornament exchange is one of my favorite parts of being a bee, and it’s hard to believe that this is already our FOURTH annual bee ornament exchange! Each year, the blogger bees all get together and participate in a secret Santa ornament exchange. With a $15 budget, each bee is challenged to come up with an ornament (handmade or store bought) that represents the bee’s moniker that they’ve drawn! This year over 100 bees participated! WHEW! Check out the adorable ornaments the bees came up with:
What do you get when you mash up these two inspiration photos?
Before we even got engaged, Mr Elk and I were totally 100% on the same page about where we would be taking our honeymoon.
Oh Santorini, how I would love to bathe in the glory of your beauty! I fell in love with a Greek honeymoon after watching The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants one too many times, and for some reason Mr Elk agreed with me that Greece was the perfect place to relax after our nuptials. But then money woes struck the nation, and we began seeing visions of mobs and hearing stories of transportation strikes. It was all a little too much for us, plus we realized how expensive it was going to be. So I said goodbye to my dream honeymoon and started thinking of other places we could go.
Mrs. Teacup nominates Mrs. Deviled Egg’s post on how to make pocketfolds. It inspired her DIY spirit and helped her create 175 of her own!
~~~
Pocketfold invitations are all the rage, but buying them can be costly if you need to purchase a large quantity. Making them yourself is a great option if you are on a budget and have a few months before it’s time to mail the invites. So, I thought I’d show you how I made one from some old card stock. This pocketfold is made from one sheet of 12″x12″ scrapbooking card stock and cost me less than 20¢ thanks to paper purchased during an open stock paper sale at Jo-Ann’s.
1. Start with your sheet of 12″x12″ card stock and use a paper trimmer to cut it down to 7″x12″. Keep the remaining piece for making the pocket.

I, very similarly to Miss Honey, decided to take a break from all-things wedding, and I turned my attention to creating gifts for my coworkers. I wanted to gift them something homemade. I considered cookies among other baked goods, but quickly decided on hot cocoa mix since I already had the perfect containers: those extra mason jars from my failed DIY.
I started by researching recipes and read great reviews on one from Alton Brown on the Food Network. I noted the reviewers’ suggestions and ended up with my revised recipe:
I combined all of the ingredients (minus the marshmallows) in a large bowl and slowly stirred with a wooden spatula. (Be prepared to make a big mess!) I then spooned the mix into my jars.

After we finished our bridal party photos and cooled off inside for a few minutes, it was time to head over to the ceremony site. Luckily, we were staying on a guest house on the venue property all weekend, so we only had a short drive over from the house to the Rose Pavilion. In nicer weather, we would have just walked, but since it was so warm, we decided to take air conditioned vehicles.

Our day-of coordinator, Shelley, had done a wonderful job making sure all of the decorations were placed perfectly.
