About Mrs. Aardvark

Through My Guy’s Eyes

January 13th, 2012 @ 6:32 am by Mrs. Aardvark

So I recently picked up the latest copy of Martha Stewart Weddings and was paging through it with the Mister. I thought I could entice him into a game of “which do you like best” but he was not biting. I even had a really easy page with only two dresses on it that were totally different:

After a bit of prodding Mr. Aardvark considered the picture above and said, “Well, they both look exactly alike!” I about fell out of my chair! I mean these two dresses may have been similar but exactly alike!? I don’t think so.

I quickly gave up on “Which do you like best” and was just flipping though for my own enjoyment when I came to the picture below.

It took my breath away. In fact, I may have gasped a little, drawing Mr. Aardvark’s attention. I told him how much I like that dress how alluring and sophisticated the draping was. I adore how the flap in the back hints at sexiness without spelling everything out. I am intrigued by the way it gaps open a bit, inviting you to look but at the same time covering the back. I was falling fast for the delicate beading. The whole thing captivated me. What did Mr. A have to say?

“It looks like those old fashioned pajamas that have a button flap in the back so you can poop!”

I pretty much died.

At this point I was in awe of how two people, and not just any, random two, but two who agree on lots of things, could look at these images and see such differences. It reminded me how amazing it is that people are able to communicate at all, let alone enough to fall in love. It also reminded me how lucky I was to have a set of eyes, to look at things so, totally, differently than I do, on my team. I really think this is part of what makes couples work. They balance each other out. One person may see elegance, the other a butt flap, and the reality is somewhere in between.

Have you had any deep revelations during seeming silly moments?

Hahaha I must be a man because I had the same thought about the old fashioned pajamas! lol. I’ve also played the which do you like better game with Mr. P. No dice. They all look the same to him too.

@ Miss Mink, Mr. Aardvark is a bit color blind…so he has given me free reign with paint! And I was sure to take full advantage at our last apartment. :)

I wasn’t sure what I wanted in a dress but I loved pouring over them. I also knew I didn’t want to show up on the wedding day in a dress the fiance would hate so I gave him a magazine and asked him to mark off all the ones he hated. Not liked, hated. He had a blast with it, making little commentary and what not. When I browsed through the pics later I had a very clear picture of things he was less than thrilled about in a dress and I used those to help me find something amazing. (Thankfully, none of what I was looking for in a dress made his cut list.)

This is where I shake my head and say “Boys.. ah..” Sometimes I just don’t get them. Early in the wedding planning I told him all my wonderful whimsical ideas and draping fabrics, fabric flowers with hints of satin and pearls. I even showed pics of my inspiration. He said “yuck, can’t a wedding look like a wedding?” so I asked him what that meant… Traditional, Flowers, Tables, Dinner. Okay its his too. I worked super hard to incorporate mine and his but keeping it traditional. My dress is even more traditional. But I told him The Rehearsal Dinner is Mine - I’m going to decorate it. So… I started Craft Time. Yea!!! I finished some of the fabric flowers with buttons in the center and my fiance goes “Wow, I like these. Are these for the wedding? They’re really good, babe” Ugh… ugh… ugh… dammit - I’m giving him the wedding day florist bill. LOL oops forgot he’s paying the whole thing, and now I think he deserves too. :-)

@Ms Ke Aloha, That is too funny! I have always found it is better to show him an actual thing (in the correct color) than a photo or drawing… Something about visualization…

hahah Mr. Unicycle has the same reactions to all the fashion trends I think are so cutting edge. Reminds me of Michael Kors’ critiques on project runway.

Yeah, I kinda see the poop flap too…LOL

I gave up caring about what Mr.PF likes in a dress cause he has no sense of fashion AT.ALL.

I just went with a dress that stole my heart and I’m sure Mr.PF will think I’m perfect :D….well, he better anyways.

Just the other night FI and I were flipping through that same magazine and I paused on that same dress. We both agree with Mr Aardvark, though, lol

Soo I pretty much thought the same thing when I saw that dress, hehe.

It’s not necessarily funny but when I brought up the point of favors for guests and how I thought it’d be neat to make book plates with our name and date on it instead of fans/napkins/matches/candies all he could say was “I don’t think that’s a good idea because no one would use it since it had our names on it.” No matter how I tried to explain it didn’t serve a function but only a piece of paper to put in a scrapbook or photo album he said “then don’t call it a book plate, that’s stupid just say it’s a piece of paper” and crushed my unique little idea that I stole from some random wedding magazine and thought was super neat. :( Other than that the only input he’s given is that he doesn’t want to sped 55 min. in a church and have a service, he thinks that silhouette cut outs of us are too crafty, and that some floral arrangements contain too much green. Boys are weird.

Hahaha. I love this. The poop flap comment made me smile. It is so true though how differences keep things interesting AND open your eyes to new points of view.

Haha, I have definitely had similar conversations with FI. Especially about colors! As a graphic designer (and having to go through a traumatizing color theory class) I am used to seeing the subtly different color shifts. When I was picking the red for our invites I printed out a page of about 50 red swatches. He pointed to one and said “That’s the only one that looks different”!

He then brought me an article about a month later about how guys eyes aren’t made to see subtle color differences, just so he could be right :D haha

I love this. I was showing him three different veils last night and asked what one he liked best. He says “They all look the same.” I respond, “no they dont, what do you like best.” Then he backs away and says “ooohhh noooo, this is a dangerous game…one I cannot win.” Hahahahaha.

@Miss Aardvark: My mother and I laugh about his changing opinions all the time. Opinions about the wedding he has directly stated to my mother and then denies ever thinking. LOL - its funny. At least he’s not like this on everything - just the first day of our life together. It will be amazing no matter what.

Be grateful he actually share with you what he thinks! YOU need to know his thoughts on stuff, and if he can say whatever pops into his mind, WHOOHOO! it’s all good.
