Mrs. Hawk, Richmond, VA Age and Occupation: 26, Finance Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, District Supervisor Engagement Date: March 13, 2011 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Chapel of the Sir Christopher Wren Building, 2007 Legacy Hall About Me: I’m an Arizona-born girl who has spent the majority of my life living below the Mason-Dixon line. The South has definitely earned a special place in my heart (alongside my Virginia born and bred fiance, of course!). We are planning a traditional Christian ceremony at my alma mater in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, followed by a rocking reception filled with Southern cooking and vintage/shabby chic details. When we’re not wedding planning, we enjoy spending time with our three dogs, going for runs together, watching plenty of football (or baseball depending on the season), and sampling new wine.
About Mrs. Hawk

Dressing the Men

January 16th, 2012 @ 2:29 pm by Mrs. Hawk

Another task we tackled while on vacation was solidifying the overall look for Mr. Hawk and the groomsmen. We discussed gray suits with yellow ties to coordinate with the bridesmaids, but we were also toying with the idea of bow ties. I really enjoy the look of bow ties, but Mr. Hawk had never worn one before. Fortunately for me, he had expressed interest in trying them out and this was the perfect opportunity.

We started by stopping by Men’s Warehouse. We discussed with our consultant that we wanted a three piece suit in dark gray, and he directed us to the Pronto Uomo Charcoal Suit Separates, suggesting that separates would greatly reduce the need for costly alterations. We paired the Pronto Uomo’s vest, flat front slacks, and slim cut jacket with a white shirt and yellow tie. Since Men’s Warehouse didn’t have any bow ties, Mr. Hawk didn’t try anything on, but we were able to get a sense of the color combination. After seeing the charcoal suit with the first more golden yellow tie, we knew that we’d want to go with a paler version.

This second combination was our favorite. The pale tie offered a nice contrast against the darker suit.

We also made a stop over at Macy’s, where they did have bow ties. Although they weren’t any available in yellow, we were able to get an idea of the overall look. Mr. Hawk has on Alfani’s Red suit separates in gray.

Mr. Hawk and I loved the bow tie. (I may be biased, but doesn’t he look SO.DARN.CUTE?!) I’m really glad that I requested Mr. Hawk actually try on the full three piece suit and bow tie combination. It really helped solidify our decision.

We still have to go out and make our final suit selection and find the perfect bow tie, but we’re one step closer to having the groomsmen’s look complete.

Are your men wearing tuxes or suits? Would you ever consider bow ties?

SO CUTE!

I was open to whatever Mr. Mink wanted…and he said he wanted tuxes over suits. I was so surprised! I made him watch some of the Golden Globes under the pretense of scoping out different styles. :)

we’re going with gray suits too! we looked at men’s warehouse back in october and the store we went to said they wouldn’t have any gray suits til closer to spring. was that the case for you?

we’re also still toying with the idea of rent vs. asking our groomsmen to buy them. i didn’t think you could rent suits, but my fiance still says you can. what are you doing in your case?

Bow ties are not for everyone, but I think it suits Mr.Hawk really well. Good luck in your quest for the perfect yellow bow tie!

Mr. Hawk looks so good! My FI chose tuxes over suits, but it’s a really modern and sleek looking tux so I think it’s kind of the best of both worlds. :) And he was SUPER adamant about one thing - NO bow ties. He already gets made fun of for looking younger than he is, though…so that might have something to do with it.

We considered suits over tuxes… but decided on tuxes. i’m so super lucky that my FI works at Men’s Wearhouse as a part time weekend job- so he’s able to know exactly what they have and what they carry, so he picks stuff out when it’s slow! =P

My fiance is not going with any ties, bow tie or straight one. His neck feels choked when wearing something closed in around his neck.
Oh well, one less thing to worry about!

We did suit shopping over the weekend, too. I don’t know if its practical for you, but we’re using mysuitny.com and I HIGHLY recommend. Custom suits starting at $495 and the least expensive fabrics were awesome. We’re doing three piece, lighter-than-charcoal but not light gray with blue accents (I think!). FBIL has 2 suits from there, and bought 2 more. We’re going back in July for Mr. Edwin’s fitting/order. We haven’t decided on bowtie/tie, but I’m definitely going to take your advice and just go try it on.

Is Mr. Hawk going to be wearing shoes? LOL

The tux is really classy, I wish my fiance would wear one, but since there are no tie, there’s no point in a classy tux… So he’ll be wearing a suit. with the shirt to match my dress, lavender!

@Miss Mink: I bet the Golden Globes provided PLENTY of inspiration! ;)

@bean1: We went into Men’s Warehouse in early January and didn’t have any trouble finding gray suits, but we were going for a more charcoal color. If you were looking for a lighter gray, I could see them not having as much availability.
To answer your question about rentals vs. buying, we are asking our groomsmen to buy. The suits we found were around $250 for everything. Tux rentals can be close to $200 where in the area, so it’s not a huge difference, and they get to keep the suit! There are companies that offer rentals, but we didn’t really look into them since we decided to buy. Hope that helps!

I never even thought of a bowtie when it came to dressing the men, but Mr. Hawk is seriously so damn cute in it! You should definitely go that route!

@Fleur de Lys: Thank you!

@msbadger7: Haha, I completely understand. I think some of our groomsmen are a little hesitant to try them, but hopefully it will work out well for everyone!

@Mrs. Pony: Thank you!

@future_schu: That IS very lucky! Hopefully he can work in a little employee discount too! ;)

@Ms.Ninja: Yay for bow ties! I’m loving that they’re back in style.

@RoxanneV: Absolutely! The search for the ties will probably be the hardest part. You’re lucky!

@Edwin13: Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll have to check out their website.

@RoxanneV: Haha too funny. My dad also looked at these pictures and said, “nice shoes.”
