Search for a Song

Choosing a first-dance song has been a humongous wedding-planning headache. We don’t have a song or artist we identified with before getting engaged, so we had to start the sappy-song search from scratch. I must have sent my Mr. Boa about a gazillion YouTube links over the last seven months, and he had something to say about each and every one.

The first batch of links I sent were all from Il Divo, one of our favorite musicians. They are very romantic, suit the mood, and are in Spanish, which means our guest would understand the lyrics.

Some of the Il Divo songs I liked:

“Si Tu Me Amas”

“Hasta Mi Final”

Video via YouTube

“With You I’m Born Again”

Video via YouTube

These were immediately shot down by FI for being to opera-ish and making us seem like we are trying too hard. Next.

The second batch of song links I sent were Disney love songs, as I thought it would be nice to infuse a little Disney magic somewhere other than our cake topper.

Some of the contenders for our Disney first dance were:

“So Close” from Enchanted

Video via YouTube

“If I Never Knew You” from Pocahontas 10th Anniversary Edition DVD

Video via YouTube

“So This Is Love” by James Ingram from Cinderella

Video via YouTube

After some consideration, Mr. Boa decided Disney songs were a little too out there for his traditional self, but marked “So Close” as a possible contender. I had fallen totally in love with the Disney first-dance idea, so I was a little bummed he wasn’t totally onboard. It took a couple of weeks hiatus from wedding-song searching to recover from the disappointment.

Was your search for a first dance song a no-brainer or was it as complicated as mine? Do you have any song suggestions for us?

We honestly just picked one from our bands website. “Can’t help falling in love with you” :)

I feel your pain. We have to start from scratch as well. We don’t a “a song” and all the songs we do identify with our relationship really aren’t first dance material… or wedding material in some cases. I love the Disney first dance idea!

Ours was a no brainer. Early in the relationship “Smile” by Uncle Kracker came out. We soon decided that the words suited us. Especially “You make me dance like a fool” – Husband loves making up silly dances when we are at the local pub with friends. ANd this line struck us the most “Just the thought of you girl makes me smile” So that was our first dance song. Although Husband wanted “Amaze” by Lonestar but my BF had claimed that song years ago and it will always be her song.

I’m going through the same exact thing. It doesn’t seem like anything perfectly “fits”… I’m still on the search! Good luck!

our choice was pretty easy “My funny valentine” as it has always been “our” song, the only contender which i kind of like more for it being so un-traditional is Led Zepellin’s “Over the hills & Far away” but its not really a slow dance song…

we’ll see, best of luck to you miss boa! my fiance is half puerto rican and my best friend lives there, he will be flying in thursday for the weekend to celebrate my birthday…hope i can fly over there soon for a fun weekend myself.

We won’t be dancing at our wedding, it’s a simple ceremony with lunch afterwards.
BUT right after the vows and introduction of us as a couple, we will be having “Twist and Shout” by the Beatles…. yes, you read it right!
At the same time I will be yelling the two most perfect words in the universe….”Let’s eat!”
    TA-DA!
    No traditional wedding here!

We definitely had (and are kind of still having) issues with the first dance song – the few bands we identify ourselves/our relationship with honestly have all sad, mopey songs. The few good ones are way too fast for a first dance. I’ve given Foxy millions of options but, as similar as a lot of our music tastes are, all the songs I’ve found are clearly ones he hates. I *think* we’ve come up with a compromise – it’s not a typical song, but we both love it, and that’s what counts!

We don’t have an “our song” either. But I nipped that headache in the bud and put it on FI’s to-do list. Done! =)
