Spending for the “Wedding”?

January 16th, 2012 @ 5:56 am by Mrs. Mole

Tell it to me straight, hive. Do you find yourself spending more money on certain things and then justifying it as being “for the wedding?” Even if the objects you are buying are only tangentially related to the wedding?

Man, I have to answer yes to both of those questions. I just got back from Nordstrom Rack. Again. I know, I know. The store is way too close to where I am going once a week now for wedding dress alterations. I ended up finding another dress to be part of my “other wedding dresses” collection. I am justifying this purchase in my head for three reasons:

1. I will wear it to our rehearsal dinner, thus making the original rehearsal dinner dress into a honeymoon dress. And, seriously, can you have too many honeymoon dresses? (Rational Brain pops up to say, “Yes. Seriously. You can. You are getting preeeetty close to that point.” Wedding Brain quickly shuts her down, though, by humming along with “Somebody’s Getting Married” from Muppets Take Manhattan.)

2. I got it for a steal. This Milly dress cost me $50 plus tax. (My general advice: unless you are looking for a particular dress, always look at Nordstrom Rack before Rent the Runway. I’ve been able to purchase three or four dresses, including this Milly dress, for the same cost as renting them. If you are truly never going to wear the dress again, you can then take it to Crossroads/Buffalo Exchange/etc and get some money back!)

3. I think it’s darn cute. Here’s some photos.

I am using my left hand to try to conceal the tag. Classy.

Of course, this one dress is not the only thing that I’ve allowed Wedding Brain to justify. I bought new eye shadow. I bought a travel wallet (because, clearly, my passport needs to travel in style). I bought extra aloe and suntan lotion.

We aren’t going broke from these purchases; in fact, a lot of the money was given to me as birthday and Christmas presents from my parents. But would I be spending the way that I am now without a wedding in the horizon? Probably not.

So, hive, make me feel like I am not alone. What extra purchases has your Wedding Brain allowed you to justify?

Did you see the number of dressed I picked up at the J. Crew sale, where every dress was $30? NINE. Four were for bridesmaids.

I totally justified two of the dresses, which were white, by saying they were for wedding related parties. Too bad I bought strapless and I’m not totally comfortable in strapless dresses! Oops!

Your dress is adorable and I’m 100% sure you’ll wear that after the wedding. It’s a great dress!

Do you know how much makeup has been bought “for the wedding”? Way more than I’ll use, especially since I’m having my makeup done. Lol.

Love the dress!!

I just bought 3 “honeymoon dresses” this weekend. Thankful I’m not the only one ;)

Love the dress on you - definitely can be dressed up or dressed down (more justification).

So cute!! And yes I find myself buying more things and chalking it up to being wedding related, but hey it’s ok we only do this once right and what I’m finding out is this is one of the rare times in life its all about us, the bride, so enjoy!! :)

I love that dress! So cute! My wedding brain justified having 3 wedding bands. One for work, one for going out, and one that I will use as a spacer or when I am working out/running. Yeah, obviously I need 3 bands!

I am currently saving for my, as i like to put it, honeymoon shopping spree. I have put aside $120 cash a paycheck for a few months, once diet phase is over, i am going shopping. Figure cash is good so I won’t have credit card shock afterwards. I have been doing more scoping than buying so far but I can’t wait. With the wedding in April, shopping time is soon! I figure I only get one honeymoon (although i will need a rehearsal dress too, already got my shower dress!). FI thinks I am nuts and says with the amount of money he would be able to replaces his entire wardrobe, bahumbug him.

Oh my gosh, I love that dress! I would totally use any justification I could just so I could have that dress! Hmmm, I’m concocting something in my head right now…
And yes, there were quite a few things I justified for the wedding. Like a new (expensive) Anthropologie dress for my shower. But I’ve worn it several times since then (including to our rehearsal), so I feel less bad. :)

That dress is super cute and such a great deal! Honestly, since I no longer have this excuse, I wish I would have used the wedding excuse to buy more clothes. Use it while you can :)

I have been looking at that dress on rent the runway as well for my rehersal dinner. I might have to go check out the rack now. Thanks. Hopefully it’s still there.
But then again…my wedding isn’t until September and I’m sure I’ll change my mind again before the wedding.

@Miss Mink: I keep hoping that we will someday have an occasion to visit the JCrew outlet, but no dice yet! It’s just too far away. You got some great stuff there!
@Miss Eagle: Haha thanks! I also splurged on some new makeup even though I am having a makeup artist too! (I might go back to my drugstore stuff though afterwards since I can’t justify the price difference.)
@Miss Turkey: Ooh, I hope to see pictures!
@Robyn: The Nordstrom Rack by me has a TON of Milly dresses! There’s also a huge selection of Tibi stuff. Fingers crossed you find something good at yours!
@Aud1628: Haha I agree. This will be the only time I can use the “wedding” as an excuse — but I imagine that I will think of something else afterwards. ;)
@erostron: I have a gym ring too! I try to remember to switch whenever I am doing weights. How does your “going out” ring differ from your “work” ring? Do you work in a profession where you have to wear a flat or a plain band?

@CarolineM: That’s great that you were able to budget so well! I refuse to carry a balance on my credit card, so I always keep my spending in check by thinking about that. :) Good luck in your wedding preparations (and dress hunts)!
@fionak: Thanks! I will tell Mr. Mole that you are behind me on this one. ;)
@Mrs. Parasol: Anthropologie makes such pretty dresses! I think once you can wear a nice dress a couple of times, it’s not even a question whether or not it was worth it.
@Mrs. Pony: Haha thanks! I kid Mr. Mole by saying we will have to plan a big trip each year just so I can keep buying fun vacation clothes.
@mkim: That’s the problem about buying clothing too early! You ultimately end up changing your mind. I have no doubt, though, that you’ll be able to find something great by September!
@bridester: Haha I love your entire comment! :)

What I think is funny is that it only takes reason #3 (”Its cute*!”) for me to buy myself something. I’m always impressed by how much thought Miss Mole goes into for a purchase, while I’m completely impulsive.

The other big difference is I very rarely buy things on sale (see impulsive above). I’d say 99.999% of the time my one item (say a pair of jeans) is more than 5-6 items of Miss Mole.

-Mr. Mole

*I probably don’t use the word “cute” in my head, but really who knows what goes on in there.

Wow, what a cute dress! I love it Pretty much every time I purchase something at Michael’s I’m like “wellll it’s okay, it’s for the wedding!”. ;)
@jeffexpress: Hi Mr. Mole! Mr. Coyote is the same way. When he wants something he just buys it. I deliberate over things and try to find the best price or wait for it go on sale. Mr. C isn’t that patient and just goes out and gets whatever it is that he wants/needs.
