The Quest for a Dress: Part 2

January 27th, 2012 @ 1:14 pm by Miss Woodpecker

I was pumped up for dress-shopping day #2. After my last experience, I was honestly really iffy about wedding-dress shopping, and going in I didn’t know if we would have any luck. I scheduled two appointments, one at a tiny place owned by a woman who is related to my step-dad, and one at David’s Bridal. I honestly didn’t know what DB would be like, but I figured they would have the most variety so I thought I’d give it a try.

I woke up not feeling like a million bucks due to a bit of a crazy night out the night before, but was excited. My mom had warned me that the place we were going to was very, um, “cute little Italian lady in a tiny dress shop,” but I was excited nonetheless. My sister, mom, aunt, and BM Sam came with, and as soon as we met Elizabeth, the owner, I fell in love. She was adorable, and the tiny cute older lady I imagined. I showed her some pictures of what I liked and described it, and the first two dresses she showed me, I fell in love with.

Excuse my mom’s iPhone photos.

The dress just felt so right. I would have had to get it in white (this is ivory), and would have to make some changes: adjust it so the sweetheart neckline is more emphasized, and take some of the fluff out of the bottom. Plus, for some reason, the dress sample was a size two, so it fit me. I think that’s why I got so excited. The one thing that stopped me from picking it was the bottom. Although the lace on top was gorgeous, it faded at the bottom, and I really wanted lace all the way down.

The second dress my family fell in love with. This one did have lace all the way down, but something just didn’t feel right. I liked it, but didn’t immediately love it more than the first. The fit seemed just a bit off, and it felt a little too heavy. Oh, and also, when I saw the pictures later, I HATED it. Don’t ask me why—it just didn’t feel right.

We had scheduled our David’s Bridal appointment for immediately after this, so we all headed over. Now, let me say that I have nothing against DB and was excited to go there because I thought they would have tons of options and it would be the perfect place to get a feel of what I needed. But it. was. miserable.

I entered the store in the middle of an argument going on about lost bridesmaid measurements, which quickly escalated to involve the woman who I was working with at the desk. I’m not sure if it was this incident that then threw the staff off, but I explained to my consultant what I was looking for and she quickly shoved me into a dressing room that I could barely enter because of other dresses blocking the way.

Now, lace is a tricky thing, and I know this. It’s super delicate, and it doesn’t work for everyone. I’m not sure if she didn’t understand what I was looking for, but the dresses she gave me were nothing of the sort. When I stepped out of the dressing room, I couldn’t help but laugh and how bad I looked, but continued to try the other two on. Each time I looked for my consultant, who was nowhere to be found. After I had tried them all on, I searched for her again and couldn’t find her, so I threw in the towel and got dressed. I briefly saw her on the way out and explained I didn’t think the dresses were the right match for me. We were probably in there 15 minutes.

I don’t blame DB, but it wasn’t for me. The thing that was most nerve-wracking was that I was already having second thoughts about my dress choices at the first place. Oh geez, this wedding-dress business was not easy.

You look beautiful! If you are looking for lace consider looking at Birnbaum & Bullock if you are including NYC in your search (they may be stocked elsewhere as well - not sure!)but I feel like they have lots of dresses in that style. I got my dress there and can’t recommend them highly enough for personalized attention as they only meet with one bride in their studio at a time - so it was nothing like the DB or Kleinfeld experience if you are not into that scene!

The first dress you tried on was my dress!! I remember not caring for lace at all, and trying that one on and loving it because the bottom was so flowy and swishy. Sigh… I love seeing her on other people. :)

I went to DB for the bridesmaid dresses, and I was SO glad I didn’t get my dress there. I don’t know if it was just that day (it was PACKED and super chaotic), but they were behind and made us wait 45 minutes past our appointment time before starting. The consultant was annoyed that I wanted to look around at dresses and didn’t just have photos of the exact one we wanted from their website, and she gave us one changing room for 5 girls to share. She was also no where to be found 90% of the time and was not friendly at all! We bought the dresses there anyways because they were lovely, but I would have been very overwhelmed if it were my first time wedding dress shopping or something. Not very magical!

If it were up to me, it would be hands down the first dress. IT IS STUNNING ON YOU!!!! I wouldn’t even change the bottom on it, the little extra volume emphasizes your slammin’ shape, and the lace fade-out is a really modern twist on an old classic. AND you can really play with accesories with this style. Classic veil with lace trim? Awesome! Facinator? Great idea! Pearls? Heck yah!

Can’t wait to see what to final choice is :)

I like dress #1! I’m excited to hear the rest of your dress search. Mine took me through like 8 stores and two month’s worth of shopping, so I totally understand how it’s not easy.

I also had a not-so-great experience at DB. The dresses were kinda all over the place, and my consultant was managing like three different parties at once. I sat there in a dress I didn’t like for twenty minutes, waiting for her to come back and bring me another dress. She was super nice, and I don’t blame her, because she had way too much on her plate.

I’m sorry that you had a bad DB experience, but its honestly nice to hear of someone else who had a bad experience there - I was beginning to think I was the only one! I’d heard great things about DB before I went but it was the worst shopping experience I’ve ever had in my life, pretty much word for word what your experience was except we stuck it out for an extra hour (which didn’t improve the experience at all and was just a waste of our time).

#1 looks great on you, but I had a very similar dress aesthetic, and lace that “stopped” before the bottom of the dress just didn’t do it for me. I LOVE how lace scallops at the hem too much! And I found that trying on a dress in your actual size makes a world of difference - I think we all tend to fall for something that actually fits us and makes us look good!

That first dress is so pretty! At least you were able to find a shop that were in tune with your requests.

Every experience I’ve had with DB has been the same way. No personal attention, always packed, and at times just plain rude. One DB attendant told me my friend was too fat to fit in the dress she was trying on. Nice.

I also went to DB even after finding my dress, because there was a dress very similar to the whimsical one I had in my head. I found it very odd. I carried my own stuff, they seem distracted and not about me and, really it seemed like a department store. I guess I liked the more intimate feel for such a special occasion. However, DB was great for the Flower girl dress. :-)

Take a look at Sophia Tolli Y1901 (or Y1901A), stunning lace all the way down - well I would say that, she’s mine! But I don’t mind suggesting her to you! xxx

@alohababy28: stop it! that is TERRIBLE! :(

@AC UK: GORGEOUS! that dress is beautiful!!

@Miss Ke Aloha: I agree. We all deserve to feel special! It stinks that sooo many people had the same experience. My sister just got a BM dress there and it worked out pretty well too.

First off, I think dress 1 looks great on you. However, I see what you are saying about the lace, and if you want something better, you definitely should keep looking. It took me 4 shopping days to find the one, and the process was grueling but so worth it. I found that as I shopped more, I got better at telling the consultants what I liked, and with each store, they pinned down better options.

Given what you said you are looking for, I’d like to suggest a dress for you: Dillion by Enzoani (Blue collection). It was one of my favorites. I am petite and it fit me well and didn’t overwhelm. You can modify the neckline, and you can wear the dress as it is, or with any variety of sash. I liked a black sash with a flower on it that was a specific optional accessory to that dress I think. Anyway, here’s a link.

Scroll down for pics.

Allure also has some great new lace dresses that just hit the stores for the season. You should check those out too.

Good luck! You’ll find the one, and it will be so rewarding when you do!

That first dress is so beautiful!! I too also had a very bad experience at Davi’d Bridal and walked out after 15 mins, although they do have some pretty dresses it wasn’t for me.

I agree that that first dress is amazing, but keep looking till you find the one that is perfect FOR YOU. And I’m so sorry to hear about your bad experience. It sounds like the general consensus is that DB is great when you have a great consultant and bad when you have a bad consultant. Here’s hoping you have better luck next time!

Do you happen to remember what the name of the 1st dress is and who the designer is by chance? It’s simply lovely!
