It's funny to say out loud, but we're former coworkers turned betrothed---now planning a wedding in the city of Brotherly Love. For three years, we've been eating our way through Philadelphia, playing tourist at home, and cheering for every sports team in the 215. Although we've hit some unplanned snags along the way, we're determined to have a rocking party this spring with our loud, fun families and friends.

How to Entertain Our Guests?

January 31st, 2012 @ 5:17 am by Miss Turkey

Yes, I know we’re throwing a great big rocking party for our wedding guests and that should be enough. However, with a 6:30PM ceremony our out of town guests, even those that arrive Saturday morning, will have a decent amount of time to spare. What ever will they do to keep busy?

To help our guests use their free time wisely, Mr. Turkey and I spent this weekend creating a section on our wedding website entitled “What to do in Philly”. We took this pretty seriously, as we always enjoy exploring when at an out of town wedding and haven’t always found a lot of help prior to our trips.

Some couples’ wedding websites gave us a generic website for information (e.g. a site like visitphilly.com) while others went unattended with a “coming soon” sign until the big day. With the former, you can often use these sites as a great resource for browsing, but we’ve found it’s most helpful (and efficient) when you receive feedback from the couple themselves on where you should go!

Out-of-town bags are a great way to get information to guests (love the maps and tourist brochures), but unfortunately it sometimes comes too late, especially when you arrive prior to hotel check-in and have time to wander.

I realize the Turkeys may be the exception, as some people fly in and out, but since we’ve attended so many weddings, we often tried to take advantage of our time away and put those days off to use. We’ve had some wonderful experiences when we have the information prior to our trip, specifically when we’re able to use the bride and groom’s suggestions on where to eat and explore.

The photo above is just one of many from a fabulous experience we had in the fall of 2010 at a wedding in Maine. The couple had extensive information on their website and also provided several emails with restaurant and activity recommendations. We were not at all familiar with Portland, but with this information were able to jam-pack our visit.

Now that you have some background on our experiences, I’ll share what we put together.

First, as I mentioned, there is a section of our website dedicated to what to do in Philadelphia.

A snapshot of the “What to do in Philly” section of our site (couldn’t get the whole thing, so I cut out the intro)

For the restaurant recommendations and tourist activities, you can see there are downloadable files which feature some of our suggestions. We also listed helpful websites if guests were looking to browse on their own. This section of our site didn’t take too long to do, but the files…well, they took a while.

We decided to highlight our “Top 10″ items for the tourist activities and restaurants. Doesn’t seem like a ton of work on the surface, but when you enter important information (website, location, hours) and some thoughts on each, you find yourself up against sundown on a Sunday afternoon!

The worst part was that we originally added photos to accompany each suggestion and then found that the file was too big to put on our website!

Here’s where we need your help, hive. We have these “Top 10″ docs (sans photos) on the website, but as of now, they’re not scheduled to make another appearance. Should they?

We are doing out-of-town (OOT) bags and we are planning to, alongside snacks and water, include some Philadelphia tourist brochures/maps (and a hand-drawn map—more to come on that). Will that suffice for guests looking to explore the city?

Again, we realize that we may be the exception in preferring to have information prior to our trip and are hoping you can help us decide!

Tell us what you think would be most helpful if you were one of our visiting guests!

Did anyone else spend a lot of time worrying about how to entertain their guests outside the wedding festivities?

Note: if you have any interest in seeing our documents, please send me a PM and I’ll send you a copy!

Great idea! As a person who lived in Philly for almost 10 years I know its a great city with lots to see do and eat :)

Keep it on the website but as your OOT guests reply you could mail them a copy of the list. That way they can have an idea before they get to town and be able to bring it with if they are arriving before they can check into the rooms.

I LOVE this idea! You guys have clearly put a lot of time and effort into taking care of your guests, which is going to be so appreciated. In all honesty, I don’t think it’d be too much to place your Top 10 list on the website, sans photos, and also in the OOT bags (after all, some guests may not be super technologically-savvy. . .something I’m realizing the hard way in my planning, ugh). I think it’s incredible that you guys worked so hard on these!!

This is incredibly helpful! We’re also getting married in Philadelphia, but for the most part haven’t lived there since before college. I love that you put pictures of the two of you at a lot of the landmarks.

@Miss Turkey I’m feeling kinda dumb but, ummm, I can’t figure out how to PM you! I’d love to see those Philly docs — I’m getting married there in September with a lot of out of town guests. This would be so helpful for me!

You sound like you worked so hard on that top 10 with pics…it would be a shame not to use it somewhere!

This is fantastic! We plan on doing something similar. Any destination weddings or even some a few hours away are a great excuse to explore the area. We love checking things out, and we figure some of our guests do too. Again, nice work, it will make a good outline. ;)

I’m betting people are really going to appreciate all the suggestions of what to see and do in Philly! Share that stuff as much as possible, especially since you worked so hard on it!

Very nice and very considerate! You may try to reduce the size of the photos using Paint. By doing that you reduce the size of the file but not the quality of the photo. ;-)

I love this idea, but I think that for your own sanity and printing costs, if you include it, you should do whatever you have to do to make sure it’s just the front and back of one page.

I like the deets on your website. I think you’ll save time, effort, and money if you just put the brochures in the bags.

I knew that picture looked familiar! My family visits Ogunquit every year. We stay at the Sparkhawk, which is where the marginal way ends (on the other side). I hope you walked it and took some time to climb out on the rocks. It is GORGEOUS!!

I love the details on your website too, I hope to have something similar to it myself. Thanks for posting!
