About Mrs. Coyote

Hey Mr. DJ

February 3rd, 2012 @ 10:31 am by Mrs. Coyote

Even though you can have a rockin’ reception with a band (I am taken back to Mrs. Pretzel’s amazing recaps) Mr. Coyote and I decided to go with a DJ. We can be a little picky with our music so we want to make sure that every song played will be available to us in the version we want.

Choosing our DJ was literally the easiest wedding decision we made. BM J recently wed in June 2010 and everyone had a blast at her reception. Her DJ kept the party going all night long and gave them the exact type of atmosphere we want for our wedding day. When Mr. C popped the question a few months after J’s wedding we quickly snatched up Nate Miller of Conway Entertainment to be our Deej for both our ceremony and our reception.

Personal Photo / The dance floor was packed the entire night at J’s wedding, thanks to Nate. You can see my little bro and full-time dance partner (Mr. C isn’t much of a dancer) in this photo.

Personal Photo / We are fully expecting this to happen at our wedding too. No pressure Nate! ;)

Choosing Nate as our DJ was the easy part. Choosing the music? Not so easy. Our playlist isn’t even close to being finished and is constantly changing and evolving.

The problem is, Mr. Coyote and I are huuuuuge music lovers, but we have very specific tastes—most of which isn’t appropriate for a wedding. Nine Inch Nails? Soundtrack from Avenue Q? Yea, heavy metal and soundtracks from vulgar Broadway musicals are not exactly wedding material here, folks.

And so we’ve had to branch out a bit and get creative. Whenever I hear something that I love and is family appropriate I immediately jot it down. And then I change my mind. And then I change it again. And again. And… you get the point. One day Jason Mraz seems like the perfect fit for the processional and two weeks later I’ve crossed it out for Elvis or The Beatles. Even though we are all over the place with our music choices we know we have time to sort out these details. In the meantime, we’ve been having a lot of fun listening to music together and experimenting with different options for our wedding day.

The only thing set in stone right now is our first dance. That’s been a constant for a while now, but I’ll get to that story later.

So tell me Hive, did you go with a DJ or a band? Have you been experimenting with your playlist like we have?

P.S. At the risk of revealing my true identity as a total nerd: If any of you are familiar with Avenue Q and World of Warcraft you may want to check out this video.

Yes Avenue Q! You can’t play, “The more you love someone the more you want to kill them?” Lol I have totally seen that video. Amazing. We are going with a DJ and we are total musical theater nerds. We are going with a lot of 80s and 90s music we love. We are not really up on popular music.

Ugh, I wish finding a DJ was as easy for me as it was for you. I am trying to psych myself up to start researching and meeting with DJs. (And trying to figure out when all this will fit in my schedule.)

Ahhhh!!!!! Are we long lost siblings??? We have excel spreadsheets of music that is appropriate since some of our favorites are not necessarily wedding appropriate ;) And we found our DJ through someone else’s wedding ;) Woot woot for a rocking party!

We’re being a tiny bit selfish and will be playing a few songs that may not exactly be “appropriate” for all ages.. but hey, it’s our wedding! I think if you come up with a whole bunch of suggestions, the DJ should be able to create a great playlist throughout the night, especially if he’s as awesome as you say!

I think we decided on our music about a week before the wedding, those songs are hard to choose!

Ugh. I haven’t even started thinking about songs yet. I have a feeling its going to be quite the undertaking, but I’m very excited to have a DJ for the same reasons you listed.

Jealous of the ease of your DJ pick. It’s been the hardest decision for us thus far.

It is hard! I like some popular music too, but that’s really only good for dancing at the end of the night. Otherwise I like hard rock, which is not wedding appropriate. BUT we are finding a way to sneak in some of our favorite songs by playing the Vitamin String Quartet versions :P

Also, is it sad that I have already seen that video? Nerds unite!

We’re also doing a DJ for ceremony and reception. After reading a post by the lovely Mrs. High Wire, I started poking around and found Trace Bundy. I’m using his Canon in D by Pachelbel for my processional. Traditional song but untraditional arrangement. And we’re jamming to the only music we agree on: alternative rock of the late 1990s.

We chose a DJ too because we wanted to hear specific versions of songs or rather prefer the way the original artists performed them! (And yes, I would be one of the brides dissecting multiple versions of a classical piece for the perfect one. I get where you’re coming from!)

Howdy! I could have sworn I’ve been to this blog before but after browsing through some of the post I realized it’s new to
me. Anyhow, I’m definitely happy I found it and I’ll be book-marking and checking back frequently!
