Mrs. Turkey's Picture
Mrs. Turkey, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 29, Brand Management Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Consultant Engagement Date: February 2011 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Rittenhouse Hotel About Me: I'm a marketer who loves a good glass of wine, anything pumpkin-flavored, every crime drama on TV and, of course, Mr. Turkey. It's funny to say out loud, but we're former coworkers turned betrothed---now planning a wedding in the city of Brotherly Love. For three years, we've been eating our way through Philadelphia, playing tourist at home, and cheering for every sports team in the 215. Although we've hit some unplanned snags along the way, we're determined to have a rocking party this spring with our loud, fun families and friends.
About Mrs. Turkey

With about three months to go, staying healthy is a top priority. It’s definitely hard during the winter months, too, with colds, stomach bugs and the flu running rampant in the office. Yuck.

Since there are things you can do to ward off illness, the Turkeys are doing everything possible to keep from the sick bed. We are drinking lots of water, taking our vitamins, eating well (and at home more than out), getting lots of sleep and exercising several times a week. I also swear by Zicam every time I feel a sniffle or tickle in my throat (yes, it’s likely mind over matter that I end up OK, but whatever).

However, it’s not just health that we’re worried about in the Turkey household. This concern comes with a confession: I am a giant klutz.

I realize that many of us have our moments of clumsiness, but somehow I manage to make it a nearly daily occurrence. Some of my more unfortunate (and recent) examples: cutting my leg open on a bike (when walking with it), breaking my toe on a chair and, in a moment of career brilliance, tripping over a phone wire at work and skinning my knee. That’s the short list.

As you can see, many of these injuries have been minor and generally easy to hide (with more sensible footwear, a band-aid, etc.). Yet, there have been also been more visible injuries in the past that would be fairly obvious in a wedding dress (think exposed arms).

And then there was the injury just before Thanksgiving…

Can you spot it from afar? No? Let me give you a closer look…

Health, Wellness...and Avoiding Smoke Detectors : wedding health philadelphia Injury Injury
See the cut over my nose?
When I look at photos now, it doesn’t look that bad (it is covered in makeup after all), but this was not one of my shining moments…and I had a pseudo shiner that went along with this gash. Unfortunately there’s not a great story behind this. I was attempting to reattach our smoke detector when it decided to fall down and whack me in the face. Awesome.
Again, I know it might not look that noticeable in these photos, but when you think about your wedding day, the last thing you’d want is any sort of new or fresh wound! This would definitely have been memorialized in our (close-up) photos had it happened just before the wedding. Luckily now it’s just a faint scar (thanks to frequent Vitamin E application) and, to be safe, I’m completely avoiding smoke detectors until June!
So, to all you brides-to-be out there…am I the only klutz worried about visible injuries on the wedding day? Any suggestions on how to avoid injury or sickness prior to the big day (besides living in a bubble)?

Nope, that’s me all the way too. I’m most prone to running into things and getting bruises on my legs, which luckily will be hidden by the dress. However, I have a pretty good one on my arm right now and I have no idea where it came from. I guess I’ll just use makeup to cover it up if I have to! Hopefully, no cuts like yours. :)

Oh yeah, I’m a klutz. And to top it off, I bruise easily. So I’ll discover random bruises and have NO idea what I did. So, sorry but I have no advice for ya!

I am also quite the klutz! Your smoke alarm story made me think of a similar injury- I was taking my heavy glass blender down from the top of the refrigerator, and it slipped and fell on my face. My nose was swollen for weeks…I’m just glad the blade didn’t fall out!! My fiance gets things down from high places for me now…which I’d suggest for you too. :)

Oh no – I am safest while sitting down and nothing around me moving. Normally I am not afraid of injury as much as I am not experiencing life to the fullest. However, I am visiting a friend in a few weeks and she suggested we go skiing.. I politely told her we can go but I will stay in the lodge and soak up the heat and a few peppermint alcoholic cocoa drinks. She laughed and said I need to experience winter again – Ummm.. NO Thank you. The last time I went skiing they stopped the lift as I almost hit the pole. After a wave to the crowd staring from their chairs above I continued down the mountain and twisted my knee.
My friend laughed at me and said I would be beautiful even in a full body cast. Well, thank you.. but I don’t want to be the guest book at my wedding.
It was agreed we would not be taking any unnecessary risks over the next 3 1/2 months but next year I had to promise her the opportunity to laugh at my suffering and pain as I tumble down hill on a snowboard. :-)
I love my friends.

Ha! I wasn’t worried about the ramifications of my klutziness until you mentioned it! I should probably just wrap myself in bubble wrap…

As far as the flu is concerned, it is actually a semi good idea to get it a couple of months before your wedding because that will boost your immune system :)

I am so worried about this! With good reason! I am getting married on Saturday, and today I managed to get a huge gash on my knuckles! No idea how that happened. At least it’s my right hand, but still…ugh!

@Josie: Eeek – I hear broken fingers really hurt.

@vermontia: @futureMrsCPT: What is it with the random bruises!?!?! They are so mysterious.

@bridester: Oh my gosh, that sounds awful. OUCH!

@Miss Ke Aloha: Haha! I loved your line about not wanting to be your own guest book. Hilarious. I am also one for peppermint hot chocolate over skiing. Stay safe!!

OMG!!! My dear sister-in-law to be narrowly avoided a similar photographic disaster!!!

Her husband was showing his friends how strong his military grade cell phone was by flinging it up in the air and letting it crash to the ground. (There may have been some alcohol present….) Just as she stepped in to scold her fiance about the dangers of winging electronics around, she caught his phone…WITH HER FACE!! In the same place you caught the smoke detector. She had a broken and bloody nose and a DOUBLE shiner for TWO weeks. Luckily everything was cleared up by the time the wedding rolled around…one month later!!

Yeah…I have those moments of just wanting to lock myself in a rubber room until wedding day. Just to stay safe and in one piece!

Ha this would so happen to me! My uncle used to call me his little ballerina as a joke because I am so not graceful!

I’m still waiting for a proposal, but I will DEFINITELY be worried about clumsy injuries for my wedding! I’m the same way, getting random injuries, sometimes not even knowing how I got them! (Where did that bruise come from?!) I hope you make it to your wedding injury-free! (Also try to avoid running into doorknobs…I do that a lot XD)

Your story is a bit funny. I have an iguana and his nails are ridiculously sharp. I have been trying to keep his claws short so that when I have to pick him up he doesn’t scratch me. His claws go so deep in the skin that my scars take a long time to disappear. I hear your pain. I have the arms and hands of a cutter. I also have clumsy spells, I’m going to pretend that this whole thing didn’t happen so that it doesn’t come back and haunt me.

*raises hand* Klutzy bride over here! I was paranoid about giving myself a new bruise or scrape in the weeks leading up to the wedding. Imagine my surprise when, two weeks before the wedding, my sister texts me a photo of her bicep with a baseball sized bruise. She let a friend shoot her with a paintball gun at close range. (Why???) Not to give you something else to worry about!

@vblarsen: Oh my goodness and OUCH!!!!

@Aud1628: Haha – the joke for me was that my middle name should be “Grace” (because I’m not at ALL graceful).

@iwantweddingchampagne: Thanks for the warning on doorknobs. And wishing you a proposal soon.

@Saramina329: OUCH!

@Mrs. Pain au Chocolat: Ohmygosh…I’m more worried about sunburns on the bachelorette…but I guess anything can happen :)

You certainly are not! 3 months away from my wedding, I was making a pumpkin pie and dropped the entire thing on the floor straight out of the oven! It went all over my LEFT RING FINGER and I had a 2nd degree burn, huge blister and all, that covered 90% of my finger. Thankfully recovered (just a bit of discoloration) but total proof that you have fellow klutz’s out there.
