About Miss Scone

I Can’t Wait

February 14th, 2012 @ 3:26 pm by Miss Scone

Recently, on a whim, we met up with some of Sweetie Scone’s friends from college (Go Gorillas!!!). Both friends are straight women with children. One of the first things one of them said was “I can’t wait for same sex marriage to become legal. My kids will never know a time when it was illegal and it will sound as absurd to them as the idea of “whites only” sounds to us.” The statement brought a little tear to my eye… but the conversation also got me thinking about waiting, and what we can’t wait for.

It’s true—racism still exists and I hate that this ugly thing still is perpetuated in society At the same time I remember growing up thinking it was totally crazy pants that my parents grew up in a time when their multi-racial sports teams were not allowed to compete in certain parts of the state and when interracial marriage was illegal in most places. In the same vein, it feels crazy to me that marriage equality is taking so long to get to the US Supreme Court. But I also have faith that my nieces and nephews won’t really remember this time when we had to fight to get married.

I can’t wait to be married to my fiancee and not need to worry about bringing legal documents with us for interstate travel.

I can’t wait have the same tax protections that my sisters and parents have. I can’t wait for a day when LGBTQ kids would rather dream about making a life with someone instead of hiding who they are, or worse, how they are going to kill themselves. I can’t wait for a day when the non-birth parent in a same-sex couple no longer has to adopt their child (even if it is theirs biologically). I can’t wait… I am forever hopeful that my children will not understand why people voted on this issue. So I really really just can’t wait…

Disclosure: I understand that not everyone is a fan of marriage equality due to religious convictions or simply because they don’t believe it in it. I promise I won’t try to get married in your houses of worship and I fully support and respect your religious freedoms and personal opinions, even if we don’t agree with each other.

I also can’t believe that only 50 years ago, people had to fight to be allowed the same rights simply because of their skin color. For me, same-sex marriage is simply about equality. Everyone deserves to be with the one they love in whatever way they choose. I’m so proud that Iowa has allowed gay marriage for awhile now, and can’t wait until the the day that it is available to all.

completely 100% with you. I do not understand why people have such a problem with gay marriage- it is about love, equality, and most importantly it is between two consenting adults and hurts no one! I also cannot wait for a time when it seems crazy that we had to vote on such an obvious issue of basic equality.

@Miss Doily: Iowa is a pretty impressive state indeed, it is our “make it legal” back up plan ;)

@Miss Elk: :D

This is so well written and I agree 110%. Well said. I am a bit misty over here. It really makes me mad that the “land of the free” can be so slow/dense sometimes. But I do think the ball is moving in the right direction and it’s only a matter of time. Here’s hoping it’s not much time at all!

Agree with this completely and I’m hoping the changes happening around the country are leading to these changes on a national level in the very near future. Everyone deserves equality and respect.

Such an appropriate post for this day of love :)

I think I’ll never understand why people can’t accept a basic equality because it goes against their personal religious view. Or why people can’t accept that the US has always been a place of religious freedom. (And the “idea” of freedom in general.)

Hopefully by the time we have children, they won’t have to worry about this! I would like to think some day in the future it would also not be so hard to live and work near the people you love… and that people will be able to move more freely throughout the world. But that’s probably a pipe dream for me… I see the next generation’s kids having an even harder time with international romance. Hopefully they don’t have to worry about gender so much!

I also agree 110%!!! What a beautiful, moving post, Miss Scone. It brought a happy tear to my eye, knowing that marriage equality is on its way to becoming available to all. What especially moved me about your post was how kind, generous and respectful you are even to those who disagree, even if they wouldn’t be kind or respectful to you. It shows trememdous heart and character on your part. I can’t fathom why inequality like this has been perpetuated this long, but I feel proud that our country is moving toward equality of marriage for all.

I’m all for love and so it bewilders me that some people make it a political/religious issue. Love is not a political or religious issue! We all love. You said it perfectly, Scone, and I can’t wait either. We are on our way!

What a wonderful post, Miss Scone! Living in MA, I have several same-sex couple friends who have gotten married, and it was just the most beautiful thing, seeing people who have loved each other for years FINALLY be able to make it legal! I look forward to a time when we can marry whomever we love, because as the Beatles said, “All you need is love.” ;)

@Miss Aardvark: Glad I am not the only misty eyed lady around here (seriously at the dinner table I was all blubbery ;)
@Mrs. Pony: :D
@Mrs. Funnel Cake: Not just a pipe dream for you, I am with you 100%, I have friends that battle non-stop with the immigration process. People that have lived in the US for more than a decade, have been married for years and have children. Pretty eye opening really. I hope that one day soon that process changes for the better too!
@micahg: Thank you
@futureMrsCPT: Cheers to being impatient together ;)
@Mrs. Honey: On our way to where the grass is green (oh sesame street ;) thanks!
@MsScarlett: In all of the same-sex weddings I have been to only 1 was legal and I was a blubbery fool for a good part of it ;)
