Mrs. Castle, NYC/Southern California Age and Occupation: 26, Actress/Babysitter Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Actor/Writer/Graphic Designer Engagement Date: January 1, 2011 Wedding Date: April 2012 Venue: Padua Hills Theater About Me: I am a Southern California girl living in the Big Apple. I moved here to put my degree in Musical Theater to work! My survival job is caregiver to an adorable 2 1/2 year old. When I'm not working, auditioning or rehearsing, I am hanging out at home with my FI and our two beloved cats. I love to read, sing, dance, hang with friends, and spend quality time with Mr. Castle watching our favorite TV shows (LOST, Big Bang Theory, and Mythbusters...to name a few). Mr Castle and I met while performing in college, so it is only fitting that our wedding take place at an old theater. We are planning a vintage, theater-inspired wedding with some DIY projects and plenty of personal touches thrown in. I love living in the city but I am excited to marry my man in the state where we fell in love.

Does a Wedding Need a “Theme”?

February 22nd, 2012 @ 1:50 pm by Mrs. Castle

So with our venue booked it was time to start thinking about the overall vision for our big day. I never really thought we would chose a “theme” for our wedding. I’ve watched a lot of David Tutera’s My Fair Wedding, and I didn’t foresee a “Phantom of the Opera” or “Alice in Wonderland” wedding for us. Not that there is anything wrong with choosing a theme. I think in some ways having a theme makes the decision process much easier.

Sometimes the venue you chose helps you make a decision. For example, we couldn’t have a carnival-themed wedding at our theater venue. The reason we chose our venue, other than our emotional reaction to the place, was the fact that it was a theater. Since musical theater is such a huge part of our lives we thought, why not run with that “theme”?

But what we don’t want is for our wedding to become a “show.” It’s a wedding, not a Broadway musical. We want to incorporate elements of the theater but not go so far as to make it cheesy. We also love the fact that our venue is a historical landmark from the 1920s. Mr. Castle loves antiques and anything vintage, so we would love to throw some elements of that into the mix.

So what did we came up with? A vintage-theater-inspired wedding. Kind of vague, I know, but it makes sense in our minds. Here are some ideas of how we will incorporate our “theme” into our big day.

Hopefully our visions will become a reality. We will be doing all of these projects ourselves, so wish us luck!

What about you? Do you have a theme for your wedding? Has it worked out the way you planned?

I think weddings end up taking on a theme sometimes whether you want them to or not, even if it’s not Broadway, or Alice in Wonderland, or Fairytale, or whatever, just so it looks like a cohesive party. I’ve actively tried to avoid a theme, but kept finding myself drawn to orchids, jewel tones, and black and white. So there it it. And I’m ok with it.

Love it! It’s going to be so cute! I saw a theater themed wedding on a blog recently where the flower girl caried a popcorn box basket! It was so cute!

So awesome! Somewhere there is a parallel-universe me who fell in love with a theatre boy and is having a wedding much like yours. Luckily for me, I am happy here in this universe and we’re planning a summery backyard bbq wedding that is more “us”… still, I can’t wait to see all your theatre-people touches!

PS - another Bee explained all the reasons why a Stage Manager has all the transferrable skills to be a great DOC… pause while I search… ah yes, it was Mrs. Cinnamon Buns! They had a fabulous theatre-touched wedding if you haven’t already read her recaps, you should. So if you have any SM friends you might be able to swing a DOC for the price of a few late-night chats! :)

PPS - Sorry I guess you just inspire me! - We are finding ourselves drawn down the path of a ‘theme’ by something as simple as falling in love with an invitation suite. Now I want to bring touches of the image on my invite suite into other parts of the day-of decor… my mind is racing on it; we’ll see which things actually come true!

We don’t have any sort of theme, per se. But we are using lyrics from “All I Ask of You” on our invites and programs. #phanatic

Miss Castle, we are doing a similar idea with the themed tables. All the movies/shows my hubby to be has worked on we are using those as our “table names” how do you plan on making that work, design wise? I haven’t seen anyone else do it and I’m interested to see how it would work.

@S157947: Yay! Glad someone else is doing movie/show table numbers as well. We are actually working on these now. We have double sided frames and one side has the actual number and the other has the show title and a lyric from a song in that particular show. We were going to do the poster from each show but I thought it might add to much random color. I think for us just the name of the show is enough.
