Up for a Good Challenge…

February 23rd, 2012 @ 2:03 pm by Miss Scone

In an effort to provide full disclosure, I started to train for a half marathon (my first!) during the later part of 2011. Well, I failed to do any form of training from December 12th–January 13th, true story.

So I am back on the horse and with 12 weeks to train I am going couch-to-half-marathon…with a plan. The first two weeks I am rebuilding my aerobic capacities by varying a couple of different shorter routes and just getting out there. I am hoping to alternate my focus: one run I will focus on increasing the distance, and the next run I will focus on improving the time. Mixing runs in with cross training and stretching will hopefully provide enough variety for my muscles and for my short attention span. After the first couple of weeks I will follow a more traditional half-marathon training schedule.

Is this renewed drive to run inspired by the wedding? Yes and no…it’s inspired by my 10-year college reunion, the wedding, wanting to get back to pre-college/pre-master’s fitness levels, and it’s a fun thing to do with two friends. I am always up for a good challenge, so when a friend from junior high/high school said she was going to do it I said “me too me too!” And then I didn’t run for a couple of months. :( Then another friend from college said she was registered to run the same half marathon, and it was just the fire I needed to recommit. So here I am recommitting to run 13.1 miles on Sunday, May 6th. There will be blisters, sore muscles, laughs, and pictures when the adventure is wrapped up.

What, if anything, are you doing to get in shape for your wedding?

Good luck with your training! I’m going to tackle a half before the wedding too! I am just coming off a pretty nasty injury last year so I am doing the couch to Half too! LOL! :)

Where did you find the couch to 1/2 program? I’m doing the couch to 5k then couch to 8k then couch to 10k and would really like to do a half marathon after that, but haven’t been able to find a good 1/2 marathon training program that doesn’t cost too much!

It was my full intention to get healthy and lose a crap ton of weight before the wedding. Unfortunately between stress, school, work, wedding, and family, that has not happened. Honestly, I hardly have time to sleep, much less exercise, which is TERRIBLE. I am eating a lot better, which caused me to lose a little, but without the exercise, it’s just not happening. After the wedding though, I will also be done with school a month after that, so I will be hitting the C25k hard! I am determined to run one this fall!

My FI and I are doing a contest between each other in the coming months of the wedding to see who can lose the most weight. I don’t have a ton to lose so I don’t think I’ll win but still I love a good competition. I’m doing 4 times a week cardio eliptical and plyometric type workouts. My thighs about gave out after the first couple of workouts. Good luck with your half!!!

Good luck training! Running that much kind of boggles my mind, but I really want to train for a 1/2 marathon in the near(ish) future. Keep us posted!

@phoenixandstars: Good luck!
@futuremrste: well I kind of made it up ;) I have been able to maintain 2 ish mile runs so I am not officially starting at the couch. I reviewed a bunch of 1/2 marathon training schedules and have modified them a bit…

@peachplum09: Woo hoo! Your’s is fast approaching!
@rebecca: Thanks, I might look it up too!
@Miss Doily: You will do it!
@S157947: Nice!
@Mrs. Pony: It boggles my mind too! I did a 10 k 3 years ago… and I was astonished I made it through that, here’s to hoping I can tackle the half with a little grace (aka not falling every 10 feet ;)

I’m attempting a 10k tough mudder run in August, woot! I was actually halfway to my weight loss goal last summer, but I took a nasty fall while hiking and shattered my foot/fractured my shin. Fun times. I needed something fun to train for, so FH and I committed to the Tough Mudder challenge. Go all of us! :)

I looooooved running my half. I want to do another SO BAD but I have a special knack of hurting myself while running….so no races until wedding day.

I’m going to be doing a healthy mix of weights & cardio for the next 7 months - I need to lose some lbs and get some Obama arms. SO. Lots of dumbbells and squats in my future!

My goal is to run the distance of a half-marathon by my wedding day. I’m not signing up for any races, it’s just a goal I’ve always had for myself. Maybe when I come back from the honeymoon I’ll be brave and sign up for a race. ;)

I’ll be running the Broad Street Run, a 10-miler, on that same day, and I start training this weekend. Good luck!
