Mrs. Castle's Picture
Mrs. Castle, NYC/Southern California Age and Occupation: 26, Actress/Babysitter Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Actor/Writer/Graphic Designer Engagement Date: January 1, 2011 Wedding Date: April 2012 Venue: Padua Hills Theater About Me: I am a Southern California girl living in the Big Apple. I moved here to put my degree in Musical Theater to work! My survival job is caregiver to an adorable 2 1/2 year old. When I'm not working, auditioning or rehearsing, I am hanging out at home with my FI and our two beloved cats. I love to read, sing, dance, hang with friends, and spend quality time with Mr. Castle watching our favorite TV shows (LOST, Big Bang Theory, and Mythbusters...to name a few). Mr Castle and I met while performing in college, so it is only fitting that our wedding take place at an old theater. We are planning a vintage, theater-inspired wedding with some DIY projects and plenty of personal touches thrown in. I love living in the city but I am excited to marry my man in the state where we fell in love.

My First Wedding Dress

February 24th, 2012 @ 7:51 am by Mrs. Castle

Someone recently posted this picture on Facebook and I about died! This is me when I was 16 playing Laurey in the musical OKLAHOMA! This was the scene right after the main couple in the show gets married. Check it out!

I think I look about 12 in this photo. I remember thinking it was really fun wearing a wedding dress. They bought it at a thrift store and it fit me perfectly. And it was the first wedding dress I ever wore.

I guess most people’s first wedding dress is the one they wear on their wedding day, but not me! Seeing this picture got me thinking about the wedding dresses that influenced my feelings on wedding dresses in general. It’s fun to reminisce about the gowns that shaped my ideas of what a wedding dress should be.

There is of course my mother’s dress, which I have looked at many times while looking through her wedding album.

I don’t have a full picture of her dress here with me in New York, but her top half is better than nothing! It was 1983, and yes she’s rocking that hat veil! She has offered me her hat veil about 100 times… It will definitely be making an appearance somewhere in the wedding process, I can just feel it.

Then there is my grandmother’s dress.

I took this picture on my cell phone from their photo album, so the quality isn’t that great. I just think they look so happy. My grandfather died last year, so I would love to get a copy of the actual picture to have on display at the wedding. I’m not sure if that was her wedding dress or her leaving-on-their-honeymoon dress, but either way I think it’s fabulous.

There’s Cinderella, of course.

My favorite princess is actually Snow White, but she didn’t wear a pretty wedding dress. Cinderella’s wedding dress (and her ball gown) were definitely my favorite of all the Disney princess dresses as child.

And we have Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music.

I loved this movie. I wanted to be in it. (I was in the show later in life and played Louisa.) I just always thought Julie looked so stunning and beautiful in this dress.

Of course there’s Monica’s wedding dress from the TV show Friends.

I remember watching this and thinking, “I’m going to have a dress like that when I get married. No puffy cupcake dress for me.” I was also in my teens and really starting to dream about meeting the man of my dreams and getting married. So this was a big one for me.

And now Kate Middleton. She looked amazing, but I wouldn’t mind having Pippa’s dress!

I’m not ready to share my dress quite yet, but soon, I promise! I will say I love my dress and it doesn’t look like any of these. :)

Do you have any dresses from your pre-engaged days that influenced your thoughts about dresses?

I love your grandmothers dress.
My grandmother was married in a dress like that. It was the 40’s so my Grandmother says it was frivolous to have a large wedding. They had a simple backyard brunch the following day, and the local newspaper wrote a detailed article. I can almost see the lace table clothes that covered the tables.
I dreamed of a wedding similar to her simple, beautiful, heartwarming wedding celebration.
And then… my fiance had other dreams. So cute, he actually ruined all my plans because his dream wedding was Big. So my simple dream dress is now an elegant gown that made me cry. Not because I had the “I’m a bride moment” but because when I looked in the mirror I didn’t see me, I saw him in uniform smiling at me. Its perfect for his dream wedding and he’s perfect for me.

@Miss Ke Aloha: Aww I love your story about your grandparents. I think my grandparents got married in a backyard as well. It’s funny because I originally imagined a small simple wedding as well but it was my FI who pushed for a more formal elegant affair. I think we ladies forget that our FI’s have a dream wedding in their mind as well. It is usually assumed that they don’t care. I’m glad you found such a perfect match and you were able to comprise your dream wedding for his :)

That picture of your grandparents is so sweet! Something about that time period was so elegant! There’s a picture of my grandparents on their wedding day where she’s wearing a dress suit and he’s wearing a suit and they just look so classy and romantic.

Your grandparent’s picture is so sweet, they look so happy! I remember thinking the same thing about Monica’s dress! And, mine actually kind looks like hers, now that I think about it :)

Great post and love all the dress photos (especially the family ones). Look forward to seeing what you choose.

Like @ostrich, I’m a fellow “Oklahoma!” alum. I was Ado Annie (no pretty wedding dress for my character - just silly outfits and songs).

I loved Monica’s dress too, but anyone else notice that it’s a totally different dress than the one she originally bought? It’s similar enough that they replaced it without comment, but it’s hilarious to me that I noticed that.
