When I’m not studying or sleeping at the hospital, I spend my free time watching bad TV (Vampire Diaries anyone?), playing with my pooch, singing incredibly off-key (to the annoyance of Mr. Elk ), and reading Harry Potter for the zillionth time. About Miss Elk

Penguins All in a Row

February 28th, 2012 @ 4:15 pm by Miss Elk

I am VERY lucky that Mr. Elk and I actually agree on his attire for the wedding. Why am I lucky? Well, I picked my own dress—a dress Mr. Elk has expressed to me is not his favorite. But I love the dress and let’s face it, I am the one who will be wearing it. And so, I decided that it isn’t important what he thinks on this decision.

Bearing my choice in mind, I realized that I would be completely and totally hypocritical if Mr. Elk decided to wear something that I did not like and I put up a big stink about it. It is his body, and he can wear whatever he feels comfortable in.

Even though I am aware of this rationally, I was still nervous to hear Mr. Elk’s thoughts on his wedding day look. I was frightened that he would tell me his plan for our black tie optional wedding was to wear khakis and a button down shirt (his daily work uniform), and I would be obviously be cringing inside. Instead, I was shocked by his desires—to look straight out of The Great Gatsby (a book he has never read btw!).

To me, The Great Gatsby look means a certain level of elegance, definitely fancy, and overall timeless. I think this:

Mr. Elk agreed, with one major point of contention.

He apparently thinks bow ties are stupid (ummm really? Cuz they look pretty hot to me!). I may have tried to convince him to choose bow ties (in a very futile attempt). Ultimately, we agreed on simple black tuxes sans vest and cummerbund with simple silk black ties for the groomsmen. Mr. Elk did want to look a little bit different, and we found this tie to give him a little umph without taking away from the simple elegance we were going for :

On sale for $12.95 it is a steal! I was a little nervous about the quality, but I was super impressed with the overall service we received from Ties-neckties.com and plan on purchasing the groomsmens’ ties from them as well! And with that, a major decision made and two happy Elks!

Did your groom care about his wedding day look more than you anticipated? Were you happy with his desires or did you knock him down and pick his outfit yourself?

Ugh! This is the one part of the planning that I’m all thumbs at. Mr. Mink wants a tux, but the rest is a mystery.

Everyone keeps asking me if our guys will be in suits or tuxes and I’m stumped every time! haha I have no idea, is it bad until the wedding planning I didn’t exactly know the difference between a tux or a suit??! :)

This was the one decision FH made right from the beginning. He wants to wear Nantucket Reds. What are Nantucket Reds you ask? They were fashioned after the original uniform of the New York Yacht Club. Here, take a look-see!

@Miss Mink: yea, we haven’t delved into the different options of actual tuxes…instead we are telling the groomsmen to rent whatever plain black tux they so desire! Avoiding making a decision? Definitely. Worth it? absolutely!

@Aud1628: I think the big difference is the satin on the lapel of the tux jacket. Also, you can wear tuxes with cummerbunds which you wouldn’t wear with a suit.

@Ocean: those are sooooo adorable!! I’ve never heard of those, and I’m impressed your FH knew enough to want them!

Mr. Kettle and I had a big fight about his clothes and didn’t settle it until about 10 days before the wedding. I’m glad you all agree about the tuxes!

I had an idea for my mister-to-be that started with his looking damned fine in a bowler hat (which will conveniently also make him feel better about his *ahem* receding hairline): we’re going slacks and suspenders. Honey will wear his bowler, which I gave him for Christmas (or one like it, if he wears out the Christmas one - that would be the best flattery of my gift-giving, after all!). His guys will wear newsboy caps. Honey will have a vest, the guys just shirts and ties and suspenders. I have a WAY clearer vision of what our guys will look like than our girls. If only he’d CHOOSE his guys, lol!

PS - meant to say but forgot — when I ran this by my honey he was immediately into it — yay!

Glad you guys agree, sorry it’s not quite on the same thing. I happen to agree with you, the bowties are dashing and the epitome of Great Gatsby-ism.

Our guys wore simple black tuxes with no vest and/or cummerbund too! They looked smokin! We did opt for bowties, and I actually insisted on REAL bowties because I think the clip-on ones are weird. What’s hotter than a man in a tux??!

Just had to say a huge thank you to Miss Elk for finding those ties, the black tonal stripe– exactly what I’ve envisioned for our fellas, I’ve been scouring the internet and mall for months! Our guys all own plain black suits and are traveling internationally for the wedding, so for convenience we said to wear that black suit + a white dress shirt + we’ll give you a tie = hopefully a non-rental tux equivalent. Bookmarking now, thanks again! :)

I was worried about what MrN would choose too BUT I brought him to a local bridal show (ok dragged) this weekend and after seeing some options he agreed on a very nice suit with a vest & tie for him & just tie for the guys.
*HUGE sigh of relief*

FI hates bow ties as well, which kind of bummed me out. But I got over it, he’ll look handsome no matter what :)
