Dressing Mr. Mink

March 6th, 2012 @ 2:20 pm by Mrs. Mink

With all the projects and blog reading I’ve done in recent months, you’d think that I would have a strong opinion about how Mr. Mink and his groomsmen dress. Back when we first got engaged and started talking generally about our wedding, I told Mr. Mink that I was fine with him wearing a suit, if that’s what he wanted. I actually imagined the men in tan suits and the picture in my mind was quite nice! Mr. Mink surprised me and said that he wanted to wear a tuxedo.

While we watched CBS Sunday Morning’s piece on the origin of the tuxedo or dinner jacket on the morning of the Oscars, I was reminded that it was time for Mr. Mink to make some concrete decisions.

Buying a tuxedo made no sense, since one doesn’t have many occasions to which to wear formal attire in the craft beer world, so we headed to Men’s Wearhouse to look at tuxedo rental options. There are other places to rent a formal wear in our area, but Men’s Wearhouse was the only one that seemed to have most of their options available in the store. I didn’t think Mr. Mink would be comfortable ordering out of a book.

Though we made an appointment, we walked into a very busy store and had to wait a while to work with a consultant. As we waited, I exhausted my limited knowledge of tuxedos by showing Mr. Mink notched and shawl collars and flipping through vest options.

When the consultant came over to work with us, Mr. Mink surprised me by pointing at the first tuxedo we saw, the one on the mannequin, and said, “I like this one.”

I looked at it more closely and I liked it, too. The striking feature was the lack of shine. The lapels were a different texture than the rest of the jacket, but they weren’t that smooth, shiny satin that is typically used on tuxedo collars. The stripe on the pant was the same way. It was there, but not shiny. Not bad, Mr. Mink. Not bad at all.

I had a moment when I realized whose name was on the label…

Is there anything Vera Wang can’t do? Let’s take stock of how she has expanded her brand. She started with her couture wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and ready-to-wear collections, but now she has the David’s Bridal wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses, shoes, perfume, jewelry (she just debuted a line for Kohls), formal china, crystal stemware, casual clothing (Kohls), luggage, flowers (through FTD), bedding, stationery, glasses/sunglasses, and now tuxedos. My goodness, the woman is busy! She’s come a long way since I first heard about her when she designed Nancy Kerrigan’s skating costumes in the early 1990s.

Well, thank you, Vera. I think Mr. Mink’s tuxedo is going to look fabulous.

Back to the tuxedo shopping. Mr. Mink had no idea there were so many decisions to make after selecting his tux. I thought it was sweet that he looked at me each time the consultant asked for a preference on something, but I encouraged Mr. Mink to make the decisions. After a decision about shirts and vests, he rolled through picking a bow tie, shirt studs, shoes, and delivery options.

Mr. Mink has been enthusiastic about every other part of planning, but he wasn’t looking forward to picking a tuxedo. I think our consultant made it relatively painless. We were out of the store within an hour.

What part of wedding planning did your fiance(e) enjoy the least? Was there one task that wasn’t as tedious as expected?

Huh, I signed up to get a notification when Vera Wang Black came out, maybe it’s not at my location yet.

OMG! =D We just rented my fiance Vera Wang tux this past Saturday. I love it cause it doesn’t have the shiney lapel and he’s getting a tie instead of the bow-tie.

I love that he looked at you for each decision. My honey does that too – and I have to RESIST WITH ALL MY MIGHT the urge to jump in and answer for him! Yes, I’m a bit opinionated. About most everything. :)

@Zusie: The store here only has one tux…perhaps there’s a larger line coming soon?

@luv2puppies: Mr. Mink is going for the bow tie, but I think it’s a very dapper tux! They said the lapel and pant stripe were grosgrain, but it didn’t have a stiff feel…I really liked it!

@Future Mrs K: Ah…we got a $30 discount code by email…I wish we had the $60 off! Lucky duck!

@melissa: They’re wearing the same tuxedos.

@Miss_Manda: Hee Hee. I had preferences, but at the end of the day, I wasn’t passionate about black or white shirt studs. Mr. Mink has let me make so many decisions that it seemed appropriate that I step back on these ones. :)

Great choice, Mr. Mink! My fiance will also be wearing the Vera Wang Black tux for our wedding in October.

@Zusie–I signed up and never got an email either, but it’s definitely at my location. My fiance and I set up all the rentals about a month ago.

I have to know about that tiny tux! Did you have ring bearer options at Men’s Wearhouse? Cause if so I’ll have to head back there to get one!

Oh my goodness how funny, just today I received a postcard from our local tux shop announcing they had the Vera Wang tuxes!!

Great tux! Are the guys renting shoes, too? The tuxes seem to have evolved, but I was wondering about the shoes. We haven’t gone menswear shopping yet — next on the list!

@Bride2BeeVA28: Looks like someone at Men’s Warehouse dropped the ball on marketing the new line!

@Mrs. Pony: Seriously…I have to admit that I thought she was getting a little overexposed, but I love the tux!

@coasterkim: They do! We asked about that…they rent little tuxedos and they sell them, too.

@Aud1628: Where there other designs shown? I’m kind of surprised that there’s just one.

@LaughLines: Yes. I really like those shiny shoes!

@Miss Dragon: I know! I’m not asking the little guys to wear them, but I love them!!!

@eeper: Remember those costumes? They were so, so beautiful!

Vera Wang is available for events post April 16 2012. There are two tuxedo’s a black (pictured) and a charcoal (available Fall 2012). Both come in standard and fitted looks for those who prefer a more tailored fit.

Tuxedo rentals run down to a size 3T and are available to purchase (pictured) in 1-3T.

Tux shoes are available in standard black, white, ivory, or spectator. They also sell converse for the daring :]

We’re doing the Vera Wang tuxes too! I love love love the fact that the shine is taken out of the tux look with the Vera Wangs. If I can’t wear a Vera Wang, at least he will!

I think the little details of the wedding is what he is not too happy about. When we first got engaged, he said that he wants to pick the venue, food, and cake. Other than that, my mother and sisters can help with everything else. He has lived up to his bargain, minus the cake.

That is the exact tux my FH got, and I was laughing that he got a designer tux without even knowing it. Haha. I love the classic look with the nice modern fit. Nice taste, Mr. Mink!
