Up and Out (Of the Way)

March 6th, 2012 @ 7:27 am by Mrs. Turkey

It’s hard to believe that I was complaining about hair issues two months ago…feels like just yesterday, but yet here I am, 60 days later with more hair to talk about my hair trial. Unlike my pathetic attempt at inspiration for the makeup trial, I actually pulled together some pictures for this. The theme of the look I was going for was unstructured but secure. Part of the goal of having my hair up was to reduce worry, but I didn’t want something super tight. I started with some photos of the back.

As I shared in my original hair post, I also think I look best when I have a softer look up front. So, I also brought along some pictures of inspiration for the front

I chose to go with Bella Angel for hair due to their positive reviews online and a recommendation from a friend of a friend. The trial was held at their studio just outside Cherry Hill, NJ and, despite the fact that I knew where I was going and coworkers told me about the traffic…I was the jerk that was 15 minutes late. Oops. However, despite my tardiness, Jaclyn welcomed me in and even after commenting how much hair I had (it’s deceptively thick), managed to do my trial in just about 45 minutes. I absolutely loved it!

I think she did a pretty good job mimicking the back photos, don’t you think? What you can’t see is that it was also very secure (but not painful). My only possible changes are to perhaps make the chignon higher up (and maybe bigger—the jury is still out) and soften the front. On the first issue, I found that the hanging ends hit when I had a collar on or when I wore Mr. Turkey’s coat. Yes, I realize I’m wearing a strapless dress, but I think I’d prefer to have the hair further off my shoulder.

In terms of the front, there was some disagreement between me and Turkey Mom on whether it looked too severe. I thought it looked soft in person, but when I look at some of the photos, I can see what she means. We’ll play with it on the day of—Jaclyn did show me some options that had more of a “swoosh” in front before ultimately settling on this style. Now, just like using the makeup trial for the engagement session, I really wanted to test out my hair in a “real life” setting. I loved how Miss Aardvark used the trial for her shower, but due to timing and distance issues, we were more restricted. So, I decided to drag Mr. Turkey to the black tie preview party for the Philadelphia Flower Show.

This is me, pretending to smell the flowers (no, not roses). You can get a side view of my hair—I liked the twisted piece

Don’t feel bad for Mr. Turkey, though…there were plenty of fun drinks and food to make anyone happy. And, whether he admits it or not, the Flower Show was a great trial for him too. Besides testing out my hair, he was able to check on the fit of his tuxedo and try out the new tuxedo shoes. We also discovered the dry cleaner had stained his tuxedo shirt, meaning Mr. Turkey will have to get a new one for the wedding. Better to discover in March versus May!

Oh, and for an added bonus, the theme of the show was “Islands of Aloha,” which tied in perfectly for our upcoming honeymoon and got us very excited to visit Hawaii and enjoy its natural beauty.

OK, Turkey Mom, maybe it does look a bit severe (geez, she’s always right)

How was your hair trial? Anyone making adjustments for the big day?

Love your hairstyle, so beautiful! I had a similar issue thinking the front of my style was too severe, but my stylist was able to soften it on the wedding day, so no worries Turkey Mom :)

You are stunning but I do not like the hair at all. It is very severe and prom like. I loved your inspiration photos but the stylists work…leaves a bit to be desired.

What did you think after you wore it all night?

Ps-the purple dress looks awesome on you!!

I love the asymmetrical side-gathered hair with the one-shoulder dress — looks gorgeous! And what a pretty dress. I agree with Turkey Mom, you should let your hairstylist give you a little more softness in front on The Day.
I struggle with this same issue - I really feel I look best with my hair down, but I want an updo to feel bridal, stay cool, and not have to mess with my hair through the day… I’ve often worn my hair half up/half down but I really want an updo for my bridal look. So I always enjoy seeing people’s inspiration photos!

I think your hair looks great! And I love that you got to do something fancy with your hair looking so good! I’m not having a hair trial and I’m kind of nervous about it… My MOH’s Mom is doing my hair and she has always done a great job in the past, for prom, her daughters wedding etc so I know it’ll look great bug still a little worried…

@Miss Coyote: Thanks! Highly recommend the test drive…it’s at least a good reason to go out to a nice dinner!

@Mrs. Pony: Turkey Mom will be glad to read this :)

@andilovesjosh: Appreciate your honesty! I liked it, but do agree that the front needs to be softened.

@Miss_Manda: Did you see Miss Hawk’s post yesterday about half up / half down styles? She had some lovely inspiration that might work for you!

@Miss Dragon: Thank you!

@Miss Castle: I think it’s about having comfort with the person doing your hair, so since you know yours…you’re mostly there (that was my big worry - ensuring she understood me, etc…which you see, we need some adjustment). Good luck! I”m sure you’ll have lots of photos to help.

@Miss Woodpecker: So sweet - thank you!
