The Groom and His Men

In deciding what Mr. Castle and his groomsmen will wear, we have debated over: Suit or tux? Gray or black? Buy or rent? And on top of all that, what style?

I actually was leaning toward a gray suit for Mr. Castle and black for his groomsmen. Mr. Castle wasn’t really feeling that option. I would rather him be happy with what he wears, so I didn’t push it. It should be his choice. He is more into a black tux for himself and the boys. Sort of like what is pictured below.

I think that option would be great. Maybe we’ll have the groomsmen wear a different color tie, maybe orange!

I think the above picture is actually a suit, but this is the look Mr. Castle is going for. He would like a more modern slim-fit tux. The problem with that is it is next to impossible to find a slim-fit tux to rent.

We popped into our local Men’s Wearhouse to ask some questions. First question: “Do you have any modern slim-fit tuxes for rental?” Answer: “No, all of our tuxes are boxy.” OK…next question: “Can we maybe bring in one of our groomsmen to try on some styles?” Answer: “When you order tuxes they come in two days before the event from Texas. We don’t have them in the store to try on…”

Maybe I just don’t know how renting tuxes work, but to me that’s really weird. I mean, I got to try on my wedding dress. Yeah it was way too big, but at least I got to visualize how it would look on me. So the bride gets to know what she will wear on the wedding day, but the groom doesn’t get any idea until two days before the wedding? That just doesn’t make sense in my mind.

OK, now that my rant is over, I know there are other stores we can look at for tux rentals, and maybe they actually allow you to try on different styles. For argument’s sake we decided to look into buying something for him to wear. That way he could get it tailored to be the slim fit he wants.

Indochino‘s website has a lot of suit and tux options. Their prices aren’t bad and the styles are exactly what Mr. Castle is looking for. But you order it online, so once again no trying it on…

This is Mr. Castle’s favorite option. We found it online at Macy’s, and with their constant sales we might be able to get it for a really great price.

I think it’s unfair that weddings are all about the bride and her dress. People often overlook the groom in his boxy rented tux. Well I want my man to look and feel good! I can’t wait to see him all dressed up, and I think choosing his ensemble deserves just as much attention as choosing my dress did.

We did end up finding a place that at least rents slim-fit pants for his groomsmen. It’s called Friar Tux Shop, and they have locations all over Southern California. The guys even got to try some stuff on! The verdict is still out on whether or not Mr. Castle will buy or rent, but he better decide soon. Time is running out!

What is your groom wearing? Tux, suit? Renting, buying?

Lucky for us, there’s a tux shop in town (my hometown) that has several locations, but this one is attached to their warehouse. They’re super friendly and let you try on anything – in your size. Or they’ll dress up manequins for you to look at different choices next to each other. MrJ got to try on the tuxes he liked, in his size to be able to find one that fit well (it’s fairly slim fit-they do exist!). Another bonus – something doesn’t fit someone right or just gets pulled wrong when you go to pick it up for the wedding – they just run next door and get you the right one!
Check around for local tux shops and see where their warehouse is, maybe? I’ve gotten tons of spam snail-mail for places local to our house with pretty good deals after going to a bridal show (I know…).

Something I’ve been wondering…what is the difference between a slim-fit tux and a suit?

We had a similar problem — we did NOT want my fiance looking sloppy in a tux that didn’t fit right! We did a lot of research and ended up buying a tux on (of all places) Amazon! It’s decent quality, although it does have weird elastic expanders in the waist, and we can get it tailored to fit perfectly.

The crazy thing? This tux was the same price as a rental at our local shop. It will end up costing more with alterations, a shirt, and accessories, but it will look WAY nicer.

We are just beginning the process of looking at attire for the guys. I went into the Louie’s Tux Shop in my town and the salesperson was very knowledgeable. She definitely exceeded my expectations. I didn’t make any commitments that day because I didn’t have my groom with me. We plan to go there together this weekend. I asked her about getting a tux/suit with a more classic, fitted shape and she told me that the really baggy, relaxed styles are not very popular anymore so most of their styles are more tailored in structure. Also, she said that when you reserve your date there, you give a small deposit (I believe it was an odd price, like $7.50 to hold it), they will order the tux of your choice, in the grooms exact size, so he can come in and see exactly how it will look.

I hope this information is helpful for someone!

Mr. P is tall and skinny, so the boxy tux was out. We just bought suits, which wasn’t much more than it would be to rent something and he wears it (well, the pants) all the time.

I have been contemplating the same thing lately. I had the same idea of my FI wearing gray, while his groomsmen wore black…BUT he quickly shot that idea down and said he’s wearing black! He said he wants the vest and a bow tie. So I’m thinking of letting him have his bow tie but having his groomsmen wear long ties. I thought their clothing choices were going to be easy…boy was I sadly mistaken!

I feel kinda bad for saying this. My friend insisted on the men wearing grey suits. My SO (her FBIL) had to get fitted for this grey tux…It looks awful! He’s tall and skinny. He bought a dark grey suit recently and its fitted perfect and look fab. Her FI is the same build as my SO….I think she’s going to be a bit disappointed but who am I to say?

My FI immediately stated since the beginning of the wedding planning process that he wanted to wear a tux. Just last week we went to look around and found him a nice tux to buy. We decided to buy instead of rent because we’re going on a 7 night cruise for the honeymoon and there will probably be two formal dinners in which he will need a tux for. So buying was definitely the route for us. The groomsmen are also all wearing tuxes, but renting of course! We have heard that the rule of thumb is if you are going to wear the tux more than 3 times, than you should definitely buy and not rent!

Joseph A Bank now has tux rentals and they just came out with a new line that includes slim fit! the trying it on thing is still a problem but they had many more options than anywhere else we looked. my fiance and all of out groomsmen are wearing the slim fit.

we also liked that they have ivory shirts and many locations

I really prefer the look of slim cut tuxes and suits! I’ve actually never seen Mr. Dragon dressed up any further than a collared shirt and nice pants, and one time, a tie, so I don’t really have any opinions on what he’ll be wearing. It’s firmly up to him and I think he’s going the funky suspenders/bow tie/hat kinda direction, so we’ll see. :)

We’ve been shopping too, and I think we’ll settle on the fitted tuxes.

My fiance bought that same tuxedo from Macy’s for our wedding, and he loves it. It’s definitely a slim, modern fit. And the price is great, especially if you get it on sale. If he wears it twice, it will pay for itself.

Lucky for me, my honey and I came to agreement really quickly that we’d use the wedding as an opportunity for him to purchase a lovely three-piece suit. It will cost more, but he’ll get a lot of use out of it and I’ll love going out on post-wedding dates with my *husband* in his dapper wedding suit. :)

Ohhh I love that tux from Macy’s! We haven’t decided what Mr. Coyote and his dudes will wear yet, but it’s probably going to be a black tux as well.

Ahhh, the boxy tux. That’s why we ended up making all of our men buy their own suits. I’m jealous that you have a rental place that rents out slim-cut suits because we did NOT have that for our wedding!
