Airbrush Makeup? Is it worth it?

Back in 2010, right after Mr. Woodpecker and I got engaged, I started reading lots of wedding chat boards. They are such a useful piece of information, and I especially like when you can get lots of good recommendations from local brides in your area.

Reading these also helped me a lot in general in my wedding planning, and opened my eyes to things I hadn’t ever heard about in my life. One of these things:

Airbrush makeup! I personally thought it was something only movie stars did, and was surprised at how many brides in the area swore by it on their wedding days.

I’m a girl who straightens her hair every day, and throws on some general makeup/bronzer/lip gloss, but I by no means go crazy. I rarely visit the MAC counter, and have been using the same Sephora makeup for years and years. So when I thought about it initially, I figured makeup wasn’t a huge deal. The more I thought about it however, I decided to get mine done for a few reasons:

  • I want my makeup to last for the whole day. I have no idea how to do that on my own. Now, my makeup barely lasts until the end of the workday.

  • Although I do my own makeup every day, I cannot apply eye shadow for the life of me.

  • Recently, Little Sis WP saw me putting eyeliner on, and told me I have apparently been doing it wrong since I was 16. This squashed any belief that I knew anything about makeup in general.

Once I started looking at regular versus airbrush makeup, I was sold when I went to chat with the hair stylist at the salon we are going to. My big concern with airbrush was that it would look too “fake.” She assured me that although it might appear a little bit different, her philosophy was to make a bride look gorgeous, but still look like herself. I also was pretty swayed with the airbrush makeup primarily because of its long-lasting effects, and the fact that it could be hot on wedding day, and I do not want my makeup melting off, which has happened to me before during the summer with regular makeup.

In the end, the cost is also not too bad. If I was going to do my own makeup for our day, I know I’d have to go out and buy some special stuff anyways, and in the grand scheme of our wedding budget, the cost is not too bad. Plus, I have no idea how much getting your makeup done costs anyways, since I’ve never done it, and totally over-budgeted. Win!

Is airbrush makeup as popular where you are? What are your thoughts? Is it worth it?

I had airbrushed make-up for my wedding and it was the best decision! Our wedding day ended up being really hot and the cool air on my face totally relaxed me :) You, know in addition to looking totally amazing b/c airbrush has such great natural coverage ;-)

I’ve actually never known anyone who has had airbrush makeup done, but then I don’t know that many people who get pro makeup done that often. :) I think it’s a good idea, though, if it will make you feel calm and beautiful on your wedding day!

Someone on the boards pointed out that getting your makeup done vs. doing it yourself is allowing yourself to be pampered a bit, which sounds awesome to me.

A friend of mine got her makeup airbrushed and loved the results. It worked out well for her. It’s great that you were able to work it in the budget! I had a friend do my makeup as I was not skilled in that area at all!

@Mrs. French Bulldog: Oh, yay, calmness and natural looking sounds fabulous!
@Mrs. Ostrich: And you looked amazingly gorgous! :)
@JlovesM: I want to try that! Maybe a birthday gift to myself…
@Miss Castle: Oh yay! I’m excited for the trial, just to see how it all works!
@Miss Dragon: I actually don’t know anyone either (in person anyways)!
@Mrs. Rubber Stamps: I love the idea of having someone else doing it too, that way it’s still special, and you know it will be different than your normal “everyday” look
@Aud1628: SOOO glad to hear that!

I’ve been thinking about it….since my skin is VERY oily (and dry…erg) and we’re getting married in july it’s going to be hot…and I have hyperhydrosis…I don’t think I have much choice..LOL…

I don’t generally wear makeup….I do when I go out…but it’s not an every day thing….so I would never consider doing my own make up for the wedding day….the one thing my FI always says is to make sure i LOVE how i’m going to look…because it’s so important on such an important day….(amazing that he gets this stuff….)

I got airbrush make-up for my wedding day, and I loved it. So much so, that I want to buy my own air brush machine. It looks so natural and feels like you aren’t wearing anything at all. My DH hates make-up and loved it. You will love it!

I barely wear makeup (I have clear skin) but wow, I sprung for airbrush makeup for my wedding after I was told it would hold up best and it was SO TRUE. My makeup was done around 11am and I never touched it up once all day. I never had to worry about my face, which is unusual since on a normal day I’d get oily after awhile, and that alone was worth every penny. I looked great in photos which I attribute 100% to my makeup and hair!

I should have added that it felt very natural! Never felt like heavy make-up at all : )

It’s great to hear all the experiences with airbrush. It sounds like a fabulous option! I also love Miss Dragon‘s point about letting yourself be pampered. I sorta worry sometimes that spending all this money on myself is greedy or something, ya know?

I’m getting my airbrush trial on Wednesday! I’m glad to see such great reviews and now I’m really excited for the trial. And my makeup savvy friend owns the machine, so it’s free! But I agree with what others have said….you should definitely spend the money to look your best on your wedding day!

i was told that it was the way to go. we went to a mock wedding at our venue and our event director highly recommended it. she said you will wake up in the AM with your makeup still in place. my sis in law had airbrush makeup for her wedding and one of my best friends also had it for he wedding. i booked airbrushed makeup, lash extension, and hair for me and all my girls.

I went back and forth on whether I would airbrush or not. I think I’m going to do my own though, using Mrs. Rainbow’s tutorial. I’ve been playing around with her tute for faking an airbrushed look and I really like it!

I did airbrush makeup and I do not regret it at all. My face was flawless all night and I didn’t have to worry about touchups. The price was totally worth it to me.

If airbrushed makeup looks unnatural, it’s because the makeup artist did it wrong, since it’s meant to blend in better with your skin. I got airbrushed for my wedding and it was amazing. I’m so glad I got it — it looked so natural isn’t as heavy looking as normal makup. And it lasted from 10am to 11pm the day of my hot July wedding without any reapplication, and I didn’t look sweaty at all. The only thing I had to get touchups on was my lips and get my eyelashes reglued on the edges, but the airbrushing stayed put all day. Everybody commented on how good it looked without looking like I had stage makeup on!

@emilyv85: That is great to know, that it is meant to blend better with your skin. Plus, 13 hours on a hot July day? Amazing!

If you’re under 45 it’s okay. If you do your own makeup great then do your own makeup. Don’t give in to pressure.
