Some Pretty Little Dresses

Now, I’m owning that I was a little bossypants bride here—no excuses, just stating a fact. But I knew exactly what I wanted when it came to bridesmaids’ dresses: a pretty shade of yellow, a crisper textile, a classic silhouette, a reasonable price point. For my gaggle of girls, I wanted them to feel pretty and ladylike and fancy but still comfortable, both in the dress and their skin. I also knew that getting my ladies together to try on dresses would be a nightmare—that’s the way the cookie crumbles when your bridesmaids are scattered in five cities. But I have a pretty good eye for this kind of stuff, so I wasn’t too worried. And most importantly, I was newly engaged and SO excited that I wanted to just start looking for something wedding related. And then—I found them. In about 10 minutes flat.

Weddington Way was still in beta testing at the time. I loved that I could limit by price and search by color—so simple! As I perused the search results, I found myself continuously drawn to styles from Dessy’s Alfred Sung line. I adored the classic shapes—not overtly trendy, but stylish and tailored and a little Mad Men–esque. And I loved the sunny shade of yellow offered in dupioni silk—“daisy” is not too bright, so it’s wearable for a variety of complexions. I decided as I browsed that I wanted to do mix-and-match bridesmaids’ dresses, with different styles in the same color and textile. I liked that each girl would get to choose a style that suited her, and I reallllly liked how easy Weddington Way was to navigate. It could not have been simpler.

I checked a little box to save styles to my favorites (choosing about 15 of the available 20 or so, leaving out any that didn’t quite jive with the rest) and input my girls’ email addresses into the system. When they got the welcome email, they were able to sign into the site, view my selections, and rank them in order of their preference…and that’s just what they did! The site wasn’t set up exactly for what I needed—for each girl to choose a different favorite, first-come first-serve. With each girl ranking their top five, we fortunately had only a few overlaps, so I had some conversations and moved a couple things around. I wanted to make sure everyone had a dress they really liked and would look amazing in.

So, with all that said, would you like to see what my lovely ladies will be wearing?

They are going to be so gorgeous—I can’t even wait! I was surprised (and relieved!) at how simple this choice was.

Did anyone else make a quick judgement call on bridesmaids’ dresses? Please tell me I’m not the only one!

    I’m doing the same exact theory of mix & match for my girls but in Quarry (grey)! I loved these dresses the moment I saw them online and they’re even cuter in person! Great choice!

    Love the mismatched look!

    I didn’t make any decisions on the bridesmaids dress styles – if they all picked the same one, that would have been fine with me.

    I JUST got home from going bridesmaids shopping! I only have 3 girls so it’s not as hard, but I did the mix and match thing too, just went in saying to look for the same brand and fabric so the color would match, found them the first day, absolutely no drama (although I ended up changing my color choice after seeing it in person and realizing it looked cheap in real life), took 2 hours, but that mostly was because we joked around a LOT and then it took awhile to get the employee’s attention for measurements.

    @Mrs. Pony: took the thought out of my head. i might go for a white rehearsal dinner one…
    @Cornflower: glad to help!

    I love how easy Dessy makes it to do mix and match. I am using Dessy but in the chiffon fabric. You are so right about the dresses that your ladies will be wearing being very “Madmen”. And I agree, they are the right balance between classic and trendy. You have some lucky bridesmaids!

    I was maid of honor in my friend’s wedding, and she went this exact route–mismatched, with the Alfred Sung in Daisy dupioni. We got so many compliments! Let me know if you want pictures or anything–I’ll gladly send them to you :)

    FYI, this dresses run pretty big. Most of us had 3-5 inches taken in!! Also, we ordered them from and saved a boatload of cash. I believe they actually used a picture of us on their website for while! Not sure if we’re still on it, but we liked being netbride celebrities for a while :)

    I’m looking at WW for my maids dresses as well, am waiting to get my swatch in the mail next week!

    You were happy with the quality of fabric? We are also looking at the Alfred Sung collection, so many great choices but I’m concerned to not see the dresses in person first!

    @Liza H: i ordered the swatch and was pleased, and i’ve seen them look lovely in other colors at weddings i’ve attended. i figure thats as much reassurance i’ll get, and i can’t make myself even crazier. :)
