Thinking about the ceremony music got me thinking about another important song: the first-dance song. I’ve always loved the idea of the first dance. I think it’s such a sweet sentiment, and from that day forward it becomes “your song.” I also think it’s adorable to see old happy couples on big wedding anniversaries dancing to “their song” again. So needless to say, I was excited for whatever Mr. Wizard’s and my song would be.
Despite being big music fans, we don’t have an “our song” like most dating couples seem to. However, there was a song that I thought might be fitting for a first dance. See, Mr. Wizard never really liked to dance before he met me. (Actually, I still don’t think he likes it, but he tolerates it enough because I love it and force him into it. ) But one day a few years ago, we were listening to an Elton John record, and the first track happened to be a slow song. I stood up, reached out my hand, and pulled him up off his butt and made him dance with me. He was awkward at first, but after a minute or so he stopped thinking about it so much, and by the end of the song he said he actually enjoyed it. Yessss. Me: 1. Mr. Wizard: 0. From that day on, every time that song has come on we have to dance with each other.
Fast forward to a couple months ago. We were cleaning the house and Mr. Wizard had thrown on that particular Elton John record for some background music. The moment the opening piano notes of the first track started playing, I stopped what I was doing, closed my eyes, and grinned like a fool. It was like someone had slapped me with happiness and put me in a joy-coma. Then I noticed Mr. Wizard in the next room, who had turned to look at me at the same time and had the are-you-thinkin’-what-I’m-thinkin’ look on his face: we both knew this was the song.
“Awww, can this please be our first-dance song?” I said. “I really want this to be it.”
He said, “YES!!!” and took my hand (after I had removed my rubber cleaning gloves), and we danced, stinky house-cleaning clothes and all, because that’s what tradition called for.
This song also happens to be completely perfect because it ties in with another certain song that will be played earlier in the day. I guess this song truly is “our song” because it’s, well…”Your Song.”

If Elton were 30 years younger and straight…I’d be stalking his Buckhead penthouse. RELENTLESSLY. (I live in Atlanta not too far from his home)

The first time I saw Moulin Rouge, I swore up and down this would be my first dance song. Of course I didn’t even know Mr. Aardvark at that point and we are going with a Ween song, but I still really like this song! Great choice!
@Miss Aardvark: I loved this song even before I saw Moulin Rouge (I grew up listening to Elton John), but ever since then I’ve loved it even *more*. I only wish our first dance would take us up into the foggy rooftops of Paris and rain glitter on us like that scene in the movie, hahaha.

Actually, I found our first-dance song online and my FI agreed to it–he isn’t too picky haha We’re dancing to “Lovely Tonight” by Joshua Radin.. it is ridiculously pretty.

We have this one song that is our song, but it is fast paced. We thought it wouldn’t be appropriate to do, but then i saw other bees saying they did a faster song and now we are doing “our song”. “Aint nothing bout you”, by Brooks and Dunn, I smile every time I think about it. We will be taking group couples country dance lessons and learn the cowboy cha cha! Happy you found your song!

@sdub2bsben: I love that song! I think it would make for a great first dance especially if your fella isn’t too keen on the whole mushy romance thing. (My guy’s usual response to lovey-dovey stuff is an enthusiastic “ditto!” Sigh.)
This is OUR song too! SO and I were riding in the car one day, listening to Elton John and I mentioned that this would be a good song for “us”. SO agreed and that was it! I love love LOVE this song and it’s so exciting to know other brides appreciate it too.
We just song Elton in concert last week for fiances birthday! This was his encore, and it was really amazing to see how many couples held each or danced along to it. Not many songs have the ability to move so many different types of people, it was really special to see. All that to say nice choice =)
LOVE me some Elton John! I like to serenade Mr. Fish with this one. He gets a good laugh out of it.
We didn’t really have an “our song” either. But a few days after he joined the Marines, “Faithfully” by Journey came on the radio while we were in the car. We both started singing it and I just started crying because it perfectly describes what our lives are going to be like; a lot of the time, we’re going to have to be apart from one another. “Restless hearts sleep alone tonight; sending all my love along the wire…” We knew it was the song we wanted to dance to because it was PERFECT! Added bonus: “Semper Fidelis” means “Always Faithful.”
