The Soundtrack to Our Ceremony

At this point we haven’t thought much about our actual ceremony yet, but we have given thought to one aspect of it: the music.

Mr. Wizard and I are music people. We both have huge iTunes libraries, listen to a wide variety of stuff, and always have music playing. The music for our ceremony (and reception, but we’ll get to that some other time) is of utmost importance to us. The songs we choose would have to have some special meaning to us, set the tone for the wedding, and will forever be our “wedding songs” after the big day. So no pressure, right? Ha.

We knew right off the bat we didn’t want any live musicians. Our wedding is just not quite that formal/fancy, and, let’s face it, they’re not in the budget anyway. We wanted our ceremony music to reflect us and our relationship, and to mean something to us, giving it the personal vibe we were going for. We wanted to have one prelude song, one pre-processional for the parents, grandparents, and bridal party to walk down to, and one bridal processional for yours truly. I already had an idea for the bridal processional (and I’ll get to that later), but for the prelude and pre-processional, I decided to take a look at Vitamin String Quartet to see what they had to offer. VSQ does string-quartet covers of pop and rock songs, so this seemed the perfect way for us to use songs that mean something to us while still keeping the formal, wedding-y feel of instrumental music.

After browsing their YouTube channel for a little while, I had found covers of two songs that mean something to us: Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979″ and The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.”

“1979″ is a song that Mr. Wizard and I bonded over in the very beginning—Smashing Pumpkins are sort of an…acquired taste, and we were both surprised when we found out the other was a fan. We spent many a night driving in his car listening to their music, and “1979″ has always been one of our favorites. It just so happens that the VSQ cover of it is perfect for our prelude—it’s upbeat and exciting, and I think it brings about a feeling of excited anticipation, which is exactly what we want our guests to feel when the music comes on and they realize, “Hey, this thing’s about to start!”

“Just Like Heaven” is a song that I listened the crap out of when we had been together for a few months and I was falling in love, fast. Mr. Wizard and I are also both big fans of The Cure, and this is one of his favorite songs by them, too. It’s the perfect happy-excited-super-in-love song, though the VSQ version is slower and more formal, so it would make a great pre-processional for the parents and grandparents to walk in to. And we hope that the slower tempo of this song will help the guests realize that, hey, it’s time to sit down, shut up, and get serious—it’s wedding time.

Now, my bridal processional song. I had chosen it ages ago, and it’s a little bit different than the Vitamin String Quartet stuff we’ve had so far. I just always knew I’d walk down the aisle to this song.

“Your Song” cover by Craig Armstrong via YouTube

Despite the fact that it’s from a movie, I think the song is absolutely beautiful. It’s not a very recognizable track from that movie either (it plays very quietly in the background of a dialogue-heavy scene, so it’s hard to hear), so I’m not worried about people recognizing it as “Ew, it’s from that cheesy movie that most people hate.” And, the original Elton John version of “Your Song” is the first song Mr. Wizard and I ever danced to, and it has remained one of our favorite love songs all these years. Walking down the aisle to this song, toward my future husband, is going to be absolutely magical and perfect.

What type of music are you using for your ceremony? What songs did you choose and why?

That version of Your Song was my sister’s wedding song, and it was very beautiful! We’re doing some acoustic (recorded) versions of some of our favorite songs for our ceremony. It opens a lot of options for songs that we can’t find a good instrumental for. (David Gray Only the Wine (he proposed at a winery), Florence and the Machine Cosmic Love (acoustic version makes me sob every time!), Decemberists Rise To Me (love them), and The Head and The Heart Seat Beside Me.

Mrs. Ostrich, I might just have to steal that idea! Our wedding is on a Friday:)

My two favorite ceremony songs were 1) “I See the Light” from Tangled, sung by my sister/MOH and a GM; and 2) “Accidentally In Love” for our recessional, which was ‘our song’ while dating. It put the biggest grin on my face when it started playing at the end there! :)

@Mrs. Ostrich: Hehe I LOVED your wedding video with Just Like Heaven! And I love that your recessional song was Friday I’m In Love. That’s awesome. We’re thinking about using the “real” version of Just Like Heaven for our recessional…

What a great soundtrack! I loved Moulin Rouge, so seeing a song from it made me happy.

I was making a first pass at a playlist and had “Today” and “Tonight, Tonight” on it as well as “Just like Heaven.”

@Miss Warbler: I used to try to get my friends in high school to listen to them, but no dice. They all just side-eyed me anytime they’d hear Billy Corgan’s voice /: I was super happy that Mr. Wiz was a fan, haha.

@Miss Woodpecker: I’ve had it on CD for the longest time (they came out with a “Moulin Rouge Soundtrack 2″ with all the secondary/instrumental songs, and this was on it) and had no idea where it played in the movie, and I’ve seriously watched it so many times I can practically recite it line for line. For years I thought it was just a track added to the part-2 soundtrack “inspired by” the movie, but then one day I was watching it and heard it (it’s in the background of the “rehearsal montage” scene) and I was like OHHHH so that’s where it’s from!!

@Mrs. Pony: It is one of my all-time favorite movies! I love that I get to include a little piece of it in our wedding :)

@Zusie: You have good taste! 3 of my favorite songs :)

I love this! We also did VSQ songs! Our prelude was about 15 minutes to get people situated and we used a few VSQ songs for it- like “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Just the Way You Are.” For the bridal party recessional, we played their version of “Hey Jude” (which is the absolute perfect tempo for people walking down the aisle, FYI)!

However, for me walking down the aisle I used “Fawkes is Reborn” from the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets soundtrack. I’ve always thought that was one of the most beautiful songs in the whole series and it always signified starting anew, so it was PERFECT. Plus, I’m a huge nerd haha!
