Funneling the Love: We Marry

It was 9:00 AM on a cold day in Columbus and the bells were ringing in St. Chris. It was time.

1350

The music began and our parents started proceeding toward the altar.

1367

My bridesmaids were beautiful with their white bouquets and dresses…a symbol of the purity of love.

1374a

Mr. Funnel Cake was feeling pretty nervous as he waited for his bride.

1381

The “Trumpet Voluntary” began and the congregation looked back.

1374

The doors opened…and there I was on my father’s arm.

1384

Poor Papa Funnel Cake was so nervous he would step on my dress (which he only did once…).

1385

We made our way down the aisle surrounded by smiling familiar faces, so many of which I had not seen in the last few years while living in Europe. I can’t express how happy it made me to see my dear friends and family again on this important day.

1389

Papa Funnel Cake handed me off to Mr. Funnel Cake, who immediately felt all his nervousness slip away as he took my hand. Everything felt “right” to him. Just perfect.

1392

Mama Funnel Cake had the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on her face.

For the ceremony, we translated our entire program into English, Portuguese, and German so that all the guests could understand what was being said, which was a surprise for Mami and Papi Funnel Cake.

Sister BM read a poem about two lovers from Song of Songs 2:8-10, 14, 16a; 8:6-7a in high German so that the Swiss guests would have a least a part of the service to listen to and understand.

1397

BIL FC read the very traditional First Letter to the Corinthians 13:1-13 for the Brazilians to listen to. The American guests had all heard this reading before, but definitely not in Portuguese.

1403

1405

Then it was time for us to make some vows.

1410

1411

Miss Funnel Cake, do you take Mr. Funnel Cake for your lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?

1413

Uh…let me think about that…

1414

Yes, of course!

1415

We exchanged rings.

1416

…and then there was a kiss…

1416a

…where I may or may not have immediately made a hand grab for Mr. Funnel Cake’s fine posterior. Oops. It was those pants. I couldn’t help myself…

1423

Mr. Funnel Cake had a surprise for me, too…when we broke apart from our kiss after our vows, Mr. FC had arranged with the help of my sister-in-law for the pianist to play an instrumental version of “I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You.” to remind me of the promise he made so long ago in our Swiss flat.

1398

Recognizing the music, I was very happy at that moment. It couldn’t have been more perfect (or more cheesy, but I didn’t care!).

1425

Mr. Funnel Cake’s entire family was tearing up.

1427

The service finished and we made our way to the exit as husband and wife.

1440

Smiling. Happy.

1444

1444a

We did it!
