Mrs. Unicorn's Picture
Mrs. Unicorn, Atlanta, Georgia Age and Occupation: 22, Retail Sales Consultant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, Graphic Designer Engagement Date: November 27, 2011 Wedding Date: September 2012 Venue: The Farm About Me: I’m an impatient, impulsive person with a creative side and a flair for the dramatic. I’m very much a DIY sort of girl, and I have the messy craft table to prove it. I worked at a veterinary clinic for the better part of seven years before diving headfirst into the totally different world of sales. I must say, the change has been one for the better; I no longer have clients that bite or scratch, nor does my workplace smell of kitty litter. My true passion, however, is aerial acrobatics and dance, and I hope to open my own studio one day. Mr. Unicorn doesn’t bat an eye when he comes home from work to find his fiancée hanging upside down from a pole. Together, we enjoy shooting things (with a camera), playing Xbox games (my strategy consists primarily of button-mashing), and enjoying the company of our spoiled pit bull named Leeloo. We are planning a fall wedding with lots of DIY details and a rustic-chic vibe. Our budget is tight, but we know we can work around it to plan the wedding we want.

Meet Leeloo.

She’s just turned two, and she’s a stubborn, spoiled brat. Isn’t she adorable?

We think so, too. Which is why, originally, we wanted to have her at our wedding. We saw so many cute pictures of dogs at weddings. What’s cuter than a pug in a bow tie or a golden retriever carrying a bouquet??? Inspired, we told Miss Leeloo our plan. She was ecstatic to hear that she would have a role in the wedding, and she celebrated by taking a nap in her favorite bean bag chair.

After a little more thought, however, Mr. Unicorn and I realized that very few of our guests would be comfortable with a 65-pound pit bull in their midst, regardless of how cute she looks in a tutu. And, to be honest, Miss Leeloo is not as well trained as we like to think she is. She has been known to snatch food from people’s fingers, and none too gently, I might add. It’s hard to be gentle when your mouth is so darn big.

In the end, we decided to go ahead and reserve a “suite” for her at doggie daycare. She won’t be too thrilled about it, and neither will we, but it’s for the best.

Look at that FACE. Is that not the most pitiful pit bull you have ever seen???

Has anybody got suggestions for including her in the wedding without making our guests uncomfortable?

Awe, she’s adorable! Our fuzzbutt (that is, our 2yo golden retriever Eva) got to attend the rehearsal dinner but not the actual wedding. My mom had a neighbor come let the dogs out that night.
For Friday night we kept her in the house, but everyone came and said hi, and once she calmed down a little we let her outside to run around a little with my cousins (we were just eating out back).

Awe! I HAD to have the dogs involved! We did pictures before the ceremony and had my husband’s father bring the pups over for a bit! Once we got some pictures with them, he took them back home! We had custom made ties made for them and they looked adorable!!

Love her!! Would she be able to just maybe sit next to your best man or someone in your bridal party? That way she is no where near your guests and isn’t really interacting with anybody. That’s our plan with our pit, Charlie. Good luck!

Our photographer told us that in his experience, the best dog to have in a wedding was one that was basically catatonic–who would walk down the aisle and be cute, then lay down and not get up until forced. We adore our pups, but we know them well enough to admit that this does NOT describe them and that everyone will be calmer if they’re at the kennel!

Adorable! Our gigantic plott-lab mix (who is a big, 90-pound whiner) and our little (in comparison) pitt mix will be staying with my FMIL and FFIL during our honeymoon. My FBIL will likely watch them the day of the wedding up to and after the nuptials. I, too, would have loved them to be part of the wedding, but two very rambunctious pups probably wouldn’t be appreciated by all our guests.

I’m debating whether to have FBIL bring them round for the photos, though. I just can’t get the idea of us dressed to the nines with our two dogs next to us out of my head! I’m also putting family wedding photos around our guest book…it might be cute to put a photo of our dogs among them.

To include our chihuahua and our chiweenie we are having custom cake toppers designed to look just like them from an etsy seller. We will also be taking pics of them (our boy chi in a bow tie and girl chiweenie in a veil) to hang on the appropriate bathroom doors accordingly. We really wanted to have them at the wedding, but our boy chi has been known to nip ankles of anyone he thinks might harm me…and with a lot of hugging going on that night, I don’t want him to mistake a hug for someone trying to hurt me! And our girl chiweenie likes to rush and bark at people and then scurry back into a safe corner…so yea, no pups. But we’ll be including them with the cake and bathrooms! And I’m sure they’ll make it into our e-pics somehow!

Our girlie is too vocal and obnoxious. She never learned to really bark, so she growls. It’s really unnerving if you don’t know her. Big dog growling at ya and wagging her tail…Tres confusing. We would have to include that info in the invites. “Dog may growl at you. Don’t panic! She merely wants to taste you and maybe play fetch.” yeah….I think we will have to pass on that. Haha.

What a cutie! I’ve seen so many cute ways other bees have included their pups; table numbers, escort cards, cake topper, and pictures on favors are just a few that come to mind.

Oh, we did have our pup in our engagement pics! Mom made a sign about 11×14 that said “Save the Date May 27, 2012″ and tied a rope to it. We put that around her neck. :) It made for super cute magnets that we sent with save-the-dates (we were in the pic, too!).

Shes BEAUTIFUL! We have 2 american bulldogs 4 months now at almost 40 lbs each! So by the time we have our wedding (renewing vows) they will be a good 90lbs. We thought about it too but aren’t too sure the guest will be comfortable. They are so sweet and lovable but can be stubborn. Lol Love your site! Hubby and I were both in the military when we married. Flew in from different states and married in cityhall and were off 2 days later to our seperate states. We since then been happy and together in the same state and hope to have the small intimate wedding we always wanted almost 8 years later. Lol :)

Here’s another person who wanted to include her dog and found a solution: http://www.weddingbee.com/2012/01/12/the-poochasaur-part-two/#more-226546

Hi there. I too have a 65lb beautiful pittbul named Mya. She walked down with one of her best buds that was a groomsman in our wedding on April 21st. She was in all the pictures, then a great friend took her to another’s house after the ceremony to watch her for the night. I would not have wanted it any other way. She was on leash the whole time and I made sure she was walking with someone she loved. I also had a custom clay caketopper made with her on it.

P.S. My dog likes to sound like a gremlin when she plays which confuses people. The breed is so misunderstood. I would not have any other type of dog now since I have rescued my sweet sweet girl.

P.S.S. She was also our cover model on the Save The Date card that we ordered from Vistaprint.

Awww, I feel your pain. We too have a big, giant dog who can get a little out of control around other animals – and since we’re getting married on a farm ….

Our solution was to get a photo-cardboard cut out made of her and putting a bow around. People can still take pics with Eva, and she can relax and be spoiled at doggie day care.

Aww she’s so cute! But yes, it’s a bit complicated to include her being that big, even if she’s trained, people will be a bit uncomfortable, I know a few people who can’t see a chihuahua without feeling unease, can you imagine a pitbull? Too bad, I bet she looks adorable in a tutu.

AWWWWW what a sweetie-pie!!! I’d be playing with her the entire time.

My 2 cents: unless all your guests know her, I’d leave her at home. You know someone will have issues….I definitely think you should include her in your e-pics if you’re having them.

She is precious :) Our three will be in the wedding. Nala is a chihuahua mix, Levi a jack russell mix, and Ginny a pit bull. Everybody loves the two little ones. And Ginny, who I believe is the nicest of them all (though they are all friendly and wonderful) still gets an ugly eye from some of my stuffy family. Some adore her. But others spare her even a pat on the head. She won’t be my flower girl, but she’ll be seated in the front row. My future sister in law is dog-crazy like I am, and her task is to sit with the pups up front. Nala is a lap-sitter, Levi will sit in his own chair, and Ginny will be situated at FSIL’s feet with a Kong full of frozen peanut butter, keeping her ADD pea-brain occupied :) Have taken her to the park and other places and had her practice this. If you do include her somehow, find a way to introduce her plenty of times to whatever you want her to do, even if it’s just laying or sitting and behaving. If you’re adamant and don’t think that you can handle it, consider hiring a dog trainer for the day to handle her. The trainer could always take her back to daycare for the rest of the reception, etc. Best of luck. And yay pit bulls :D

I just realized I didn’t fully answer your question, hehe! If you DON’T want to include her after all, place cards or photos at tables would be cute, maybe include one of the two of you plus your “baby” on a main table.

And I LOVE this cake topper: http://www.etsy.com/listing/52813061/custom-wedding-cake-toppers-with-pet?ref=sr_gallery_2&sref=sr_0c51d3259667c5a6880756c55c6afdbb1434985ebb47052bfedb86a029c4b441_1339601973_14108127_topper&ga_search_query=dog+cake+topper&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=ZZ&ga_min=0&ga_max=0&ga_search_type=handmade

And still, yay pit bulls :D

I can’t handle to cuteness of you pup. I mean that pic in the bean bag chair?? I die. Too cute! We wanted to include our cats who obviously wouldn’t be at the wedding. We had photos of them in our slide show and we made them place cards that were next to ours. I was very happy seeing at least their names and photos at our wedding.
