A Song for My Dad

Hive, I am a slacker bride. Our wedding is merely days away and there are still tasks that are unfinished. My biggest unfinished task is the music list. Yes”¦we are six days out from the wedding and our song selections are not finished.

We have a few less important songs to pick (cake-cutting song, music to play before the ceremony), but I am still at a loss as to what to play when I dance with my dad.

A few factors go into this decision:

1) I don’t want to use the phrase “daddy’s girl,” but something close to that would do. My dad and I have a great relationship, and I am having a really hard time finding a song for us that feels like it fits.

2) Father/child moments ALWAYS make me cry. I don’t know why, but moments between a dad and their child just get to me. Even this goodbye scene between Ariel and her dad makes me tear up nine times out of ten.

3) I don’t want to go to sappy with the song choice (because a sappy song will make me even more prone to an ugly cry).

I have a few songs in mind, but I can’t commit to any of them.

I can’t put my finger on why, but I like the story in this Darius Rucker song.

I know using this song for a father/daughter dance may not make any sense to most people, but when I was three I watched The Sound of Music every single day. On most of those days my dad would sit with me while I sang the songs.

I don’t know why I am hesitant to use this song. I loved N*SYNC, but I don’t know if I love it for a father/daughter song. Band aside, the lyrics in this song are great.

Which of these songs would you pick? Do you have any father/daughter song suggestions for me?

I love the Darius Rucker song!!
Our band is learning the song “I will walk with you” by John Fogerty. He wrote it for his daughter and it’s sweet but upbeat. I love it!!

Have you talked to him about it? Maybe he has a song that reminds him of you?

I was having a heck of a time figuring out what to play for the dance with my dad, and finally I broke down and asked my parents for advice, and they both became suddenly insistant that I play “Tuesday Afternoon” by the Moody Blues because it was the song they played when I was born. It was something I never would have considered, but it was suddenly very meaningful to me just because my dad was talking about listening to that song all those years ago.

So I just cried my eyes off with that NSync song , I didn’t know they have a song with Glooria Stefan (who’s one of my dad’s favorites btw). I’d definetly pick that one, the lyrics are great.

I’m a HUGE fan of THE SOUND OF MUSIC (it’s probably my favorite movie ever), so I vote Edelweiss!

Oh, Miss Scepter! Sending an empathetic hug to you right now. I had the hardest time with the father-daughter dance song too and left the decision until the week before the wedding. We picked a song that had meaning to the both of us and were unabashedly proud to dance to. Maybe let that guide your decision? (In your case, it sounds like it might be Edelweiss – a beautiful song..)

I’m six days away from my wedding with no music selections too, haha! My dad actually is picking our song and he refuses to tell me. I’m kind of excited to find out what it is.

I LOVE Edelwiess. You would have such a sweet story behind the song and it would be sentimental without being overly gushy.

I would say to go with Edelweiss :) my dad and I will be dancing to a song that is not a typical father-daughter song, or a typical wedding song at all, but it’s been our song forever and we love it! It sounds like that song has a lot of meaning to you both.

And PS – The Little Mermaid totally gets me bawling every time, especially where Triton and Eric bow to each other. Sigh.

I left the song selection to my dad because I knew it would be too difficult for me to decide, I’d go with Edelweiss because it sounds like the one that reminds you the most of your dad :)

We chose Always and Forever by Cory Morrow. It was more upbeat, yet still sweet and sentimental.

OMG – I totally get choked up at the end of the Little Mermaid half of the time. I thought I was the only one! Ugh – such a sap about my dad. I let him choose our song and cried the whole way through!

I know it’s UBER cliche, but I love “Daughters” by John Mayer.

i really like the sound of music one! you sound just like me. i’ve don’t ever remember calling my dad “daddy” and i cringe at the phrase “daddy’s girl”, but I LOVE MY DAD SO MUCH. He is freaking awesome and I’ve spent the last 2 years of my life tearing up every time I think of him walking me down the aisle! I’m such a sap. I love my mom, too- but there’s something different like that with my dad, for sure.

We’re dancing to “What a Wonderful World”. Perfect, short, sweet, not too sappy. (one of my favorite songs ever is “Lullaby” by Billy Joel… but I would not make it through that one hahah)

I don’t really know these songs but my father and I will be dancing to Amy Grant’s “My Father’s Eyes”. You should check it out.

We danced to “Unforgettable” with both Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole singing. It’s my dad’s favorite, and he used to make me sing it all the time. I did dissolve into a puddle of tears though.

I vote for the first song by Darius Rucker. I like a lot of the other Bees suggestions. Unfortunately I do not get to have a father daughter dance though a couple songs I had chosen with my Dad before he passed was I loved her first by heartland or Stealing Cinderella by Chuck Wicks. My mom liked My little girl by Tim McGraw.

I suggest you choose what speaks to you both the most. Enjoy the moment… which one are you willing to listen to for the rest of your life and remember the moment.

If I had to pick from those three, I would go with the Darius Rucker song. Might I also suggest the song I am dancing to my dad with, which is My Girl. It’s more upbeat, so I am hoping it helps to suppress some tears as I too an a crier.

There is some really good suggestions for songs to play on your wedding day, including those to play when you dance with your new husband and with your dad on http://www.wedding-singer-pianist.co.uk/your-wedding-day.html

I vote for the song by Darius Rucker. Like other Bees have suggested… maybe ask your Dad what he likes. My Dad picked out our song.. .and while it might not be my top choice for a song- I went with it because it was what he wanted.
