About Mrs. Lyre

Oh My God. Shoes.

July 13th, 2012 @ 6:49 am by Mrs. Lyre

Anytime Mr. Ly or myself says “shoes,” the other immediately responds with “let’s get some shoes” which inevitably leads us to the viral video seen here:

Shoes—the full version—by liamkylesullivan / via YouTube

So, if you watch the video or just skip to about three minutes in, you’ll see the part where the saleswoman says: “Um, these run kinda small. I don’t think they’re gonna fit. I mean your feet are kinda big.” STORY OF MY LIFE.

I have long passed my obsession with shoes, due to the fact that shoes I love, shoes that are cute, shoes that people covet—don’t fit my feet. I still ogle really beautiful shoes, but I never ever buy them. It’s one splurge I don’t have to even worry about tempting me.

Here are some shoes I love:

Oh My God. Shoes. : wedding philadelphia shoes Luxury luxury-

Kate Spade – Lisa

Oh My God. Shoes. : wedding philadelphia shoes Polka D polka-d

Kate Spade – Didi (no longer available)

Oh My God. Shoes. : wedding philadelphia shoes Shoes I shoes_i

Badgley Mischka – Randall

(of course, two out of three are Kate Spade!)

So, you can see, I have high-end tastes when it comes to what I like, but sadly none of these shoes will fit my feet. My feet are the bane of my existence. They are long and wide—which makes shoe shopping a nightmare! If I had just average sized wide feet—I’d be ok with that, and could order up a size for the added width. Or, if I had long feet but of average width—that’d be cool by me, too. But no, my size 10 Wide feet do not fit into most shoes. Most designers don’t make wide shoes, and even if I buy the 11, which may fit, they are probably still too narrow and end up pinching my toes. Not good for walking, or dancing, or general happiness.

One thing I do not want to think about on my wedding day is how much my feet hurt, which is something I think about on a regular basis. However, I love the look of colored heels adding a pop of color, and how they make such visually stimulating images:

Since I want blue shoes, and I’m not willing to stuff my feet into pretty little designer shoes, I’m going to shop for some wide-width options available online. (Have you ever tried shoe shopping for wide shoes in a department store? I swear they treat me like a leper!)

I know there are wide options on websites like Zappos and other online shoe stores. But when I did a search for dress shoes available in a wide-with in blue, the results were less than inspiring. There were a total of 22 results, and three matched the idea of what I had in mind. Kind of.

Really, shoes don’t matter that much to me, but more because I’ve resigned myself to the fact that shoes are more of a pain in the ass (foot—really) to shop for, and I can’t go to a store to try them on, so I might as well just suck it up and buy something online. While my dream shoes are really pretty, I know that my shoes will get me down the aisle, and probably save me a pretty penny too! I have some time before I need them, but I don’t see my options getting any closer to what I’d like versus what is available to me.

Anyone else have hard-to-shop-for feet? Any good online/in-store suggestions for shoe shopping I might not have considered?

I definitely could have written this post! My feet are size 11 though, so I definitely have no room to budge. I can admire the pretty shoes but I’ve learned that they just don’t love my feet and I will end up in pain if I try to make them work.

I am wearing the bouquets mona with my dress. I think that they are much cuter on your foot than with the picture. Also I don’t wear heels that much, but these seem like they are designed to last the whole night. Slip resistance on the bottom, extra stuff in the heel to keep your foot from rubbing. I have gotten a ton of compliments on the shoe already. Color is also better in person.

I’m right there with you. I wear a size 11 so most department stores carry nothing in my size. I have shoe envy when I see my friends wearing the cutest size 7 or 8 shoes. If I go shoe shopping in a store I first find the shoes that are in my size and hope that they’re cute ones. I hate falling in love with a shoe only to realize the size ten is the biggest they carry.

I do love Zappos for my huge foot but I wish I could try shoes on before buying them. I’m also looking to get blue shoes for my wedding day so keep us posted on what you end up with!

Have you thought about some flats? I wear a 10 wide and I hate high heels. I love they way they look but I am past the hype of buying shoes that I can’t walk in. If I can’t be in them all day, I don’t want them. I have been looking for a cute pair of hot pink flats for the reception but haven’t found a pair that I am so in love with yet. Good luck!

The second pair of Kate Spade shoes are to die for! I think my favorite is the d’orsay RSVPs. Designer shoes are pretty, but no one’s going to see them under your dress, so you might as well get someting comfy and affordable.

I have wide feet and am a size 10.5. Try Stuart Weitzman. Amazon has good deals on them, too. Mine were $75 and I got a size 11.

Girlll you need to shop at Nordstrom. They shop in specialty-sized shoes, especially wide shoes. My mom is a size 5 1/2 wide. She can find the best shoes at Nordies!

I second Nordstrom. Or even Nordstrom Rack. They have a HUGE array of larger sizes and they’re really cute/fun/funky! At Nordstrom Rack they do a sale once a month on larger shoes – so you might even get a great sale!!

I have the same exact feet, size 10 wide. Shoes are pretty, but painful for me. I try to stick to flats, but part of me really wants to wear pretty shoes, if not just for my 10 minute ceremony and some pics then put on flats for the reception, but that could mean tripping over a dress that was tailored for heels………..soo, pretty flats it is, nobody truely sees shoes under the dress anyways right?! I’ve found these that might work http://www.dessy.com/accessories/closeout-peep-toe-satin-ballet-flat/

I am not a big “shoe person” either. Good luck with your search! My favorite are the RSVP pair. I love bows!

Oh my gosh I am obsessed with that first pair of Kate Spades. I swear one of these days I am just going to splurge and buy a pair of her shoes, I love them all so much.

Maybe check out the Lulu Townsend shoes, particularly the Bailey pump: http://www.dsw.com/shoe/lulu+townsend+bailey+pump?prodId=225142&productRef=SEARCH

They come in wide widths!

I think DB sells shoes in larger sizes. I got the pair I wore for my wedding there – they looked really similar to the RSVPs (but in my opinion cuter) and you will be able to go actually try them on.

I love shopping for shoes. I’m really lucky my feet are a size 7 to 7.5 wide, so normally i have to order 7.5 to 8.

My college roommate, and one of my bridesmaids, is a size 14. Literally, if she gets heels she normally has to have them customer ordered.

Hence my bridesmaids are getting – wear whatever dress shoes make you happy.

Otherwise it will be impossible.

BTW, this might help you. Offbeat bride did a post about wedding shoes for those with large shoe sizes – http://offbeatbride.com/2012/07/wedding-pumps-in-larger-sizes

@Shortbread: I hear ya! Even though my feet are “technically” a size 10, most 10s never fit!
@FutureMrsSpencer & @BlairKid: Flats still hurt my feet because besides being big and wide, I have a ridiculously high arch, so flats sometimes make my feet hurt worse than heels! Also, Mr. Ly is 6’1″, and I’d like to have some height next to him! :) I will bring back-up comfy shoes probably!
@Zouave: Thanks for the tip, I will check them out!

@MsVoyageur & @pigment80: I will definitely check out both Nordstroms & The Rack. I have both, luckily, within 10 minutes of me! It’s been so long since I actually tried shoe shopping in a store, I never really thought about it! Thanks!
@Laurel43: You may have just found me my wedding shoes! That shoe is SUPER cute! I may have to order them! For that price too, it can’t be beat! Thank you!
@lisaelanna: I’ll check out DB! Thanks!
@dragonlover: Wow, size 14… yikes. I shouldn’t complain! Thanks for the link, I will go check it out!

milkandhoneyshoes.com they’re custom shoes (for the same price as a pair of Kate Spade shoes) and their customer service is great, if you contact them and let them know you want a wide size I’m SURE they could do it :)

Those BM Randall’s are so narrow! I ordered them on sale once and had to send them back because while they were so adorable, they hurt standing.. as in the second I put them on. I can’t imagine walking five minutes in them let alone an entire evening!

I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem, but I think RSVP brand shoes run really small. I have ordered 3 different styles of this brand from Zappos, and even gone up a 1/2 size, and they squeeze my feet like you would not believe, to the point I lose feeling in my toes! And I don’t have wide or hard to fit feet. So beware if you pick RSVP ones!

These may not be the color/style you’re looking for, but Ariel on Offbeat Bride did a post this morning on larger shoes!

And a couple older ones:
