Divine Wedding Music: Must Play Songs

August 2nd, 2012 @ 2:09 pm by guest

Oooh, we’ve got a fun playlist for you today! DJ Jon Black of Scratch Weddings compiles his “must play” songs that are guaranteed to get the party started!

From DJ Jon Black:

Divine Wedding Music: Must Play Songs : wedding dj music DJ Jon Blak 300x300

The work always starts before the wedding; I try to get an idea the bride and groom’s musical tastes while also getting a sense of what their family and friends will enjoy.

Then the fun begins! After the formal dances have been completed, I like to invite all family and friends to come together on the dance floor. In the beginning of the reception, I play a lot of popular music to get everyone involved in dancing. I like to mix it up with classic dance tunes and current hits.

I start by playing some classic party songs to get older family members on the dance floor first. For some reason, they aren’t afraid of not being cool! The younger fold usually filter in by song three. The best part of starting the reception off this way is watching different generations come together! Here are some classic “must play” songs that’ll get everyone dancing:

► “Love Shack” – The B-52s

► “Party Rock Anthem” – LMFAO

► “I Gotta Feeling” – Black Eyed Peas

► “I Saw Her Standing There” – The Beatles

► “You Shook Me All Night Long” – AC/DC

► “Shout” – The Isley Bros

► “Superstitious” – Stevie Wonder

► “Hey Ya” – Outkast

► “Get This Party Started” – P!nk

► “Billie Jean” – Michael Jackson

► “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” – Michael Jackson

► “The Twist” – Chubby Checker

► “We Found Love” – Rihanna

► “Please Don’t Stop the Music” – Rihanna

► “Let’s Dance” – David Bowie

► “Forever” – Chris Brown

► “Don’t Stop Believin’” – Journey

► “Sweet Caroline” – Neil Diamond

►”Freedom” – Wham!

► “Dance to the Music” – Sly and the Family Stone

Hmmm… I’m curious what people think of “Let’s Get Loud” by Jennifer Lopez.

We were considering asking the Dj to play that as the song, or two after the dances were over to really bring up the vibe.

FH and I both love it, but afraid its dated.

@dragonlover: I love that song (and kind of forgot about it!) I say bring back the party anthems — besides, if you’re playing stuff by the Beatles and the Village People, thats even older than J-Lo

We’re lucky enough to have DJ Jon Blak for our wedding on September 1st. I’m so excited, and am making him a playlist as we speak (was on a weddingbee-break.)

Although, I have to admit — some of these songs will be on our do not play list. Sorry Jon!

What playlist or music options would you suggest for a brunch reception? Bloody Marys and Mimosas might loosen people up a bit, but would you even try to get people dancing so early in the day? Is a DJ even the right choice?
