Miss Cauldron, New York City/Austin Age and Occupation: 33, Human Resources Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Technology Engagement Date: October 8, 2011 Wedding Date: September 2012 Venue: Pecan Grove at the Salt Lick About Me: I grew up in the Lone Star State, but moved to NYC after college to get a taste of the Big Apple, and never left. I love baking, yoga, Mr. C, and sunshine (not necessarily in that order)! Mr. C and I met on Match.com back in 2007, and our second date was at a Texas barbecue restaurant in Manhattan. It’s only fitting that after almost five years together, we are getting married at an iconic Texas barbecue joint. (Shiner Bock and brisket, anyone?) I’m proud of the life we have built together around our love for each other, Mr. C’s crazy dog Bosley, and fun sailing adventures on our boat, and I’m looking forward to celebrating our marriage at one seriously awesome party in September.

Insurance for Assurance?

August 3rd, 2012 @ 2:45 pm by Mrs. Cauldron

My mom asked me the other day if I had purchased wedding insurance. The question kind of threw me for a loop, as while I had added my engagement ring onto our renter’s insurance policy (the thought of losing it made me feel sick until the policy was updated!), I hadn’t really thought about purchasing insurance for the wedding itself. I told her I’d look into it.

One of the largest offerers of wedding insurance in the US seems to be WedSafe. They offer two different types of insurance: Wedding Event Cancellation/Postponement Insurance, and Wedding Liability Insurance.

They suggest the following concerns might lead you to purchase Wedding Event Cancellation/Postponement Insurance:

  • Concern about recovering deposits if a vendor goes bankrupt or doesn’t show
  • Concern that extreme weather or an unexpected illness/injury could force cancellation/postponement
  • If bride/groom is in the military and might be asked to forgo leave (thus missing the wedding)

Vendors are a wildcard, though we have contracts with all of them that cover for any cancellation or other issues, for the most part. I guess there is always the possibility that a hurricane could hit Texas the weekend of our wedding, but I suppose I’d be more concerned about that if we were going to be in Houston rather than in Austin. And of course there is always a chance someone (bride, groom, important family member) could become ill and be unable to attend. Thankfully neither of us are in the military so no chance of the third issue.

WedSafe also suggests the following might lead to a need for Wedding Liability Insurance:

  • If the venue requires your own liability insurance
  • If you’re concerned about legal liability for alcohol-related accidents
  • If you’re concerned about lawsuits for property damage or bodily injury

Our venue doesn’t require us to have liability insurance ourselves, but it does require vendors to have insurance. We are hoping to eliminate the second issue by having transportation available from the hotels to the venue, so everyone can have a good time and not worry about being on the road as a driver. And as for the third…well, I certainly hope everyone has fun, but not so much fun that they do something silly and hurt themselves.

All in all, I think we’re going to forgo the wedding insurance policy. We’re having this shindig come rain or shine, and we’ll do the best we can if anything goes sideways, I guess.

Did you look into wedding insurance? How did you make a decision?

I hadn’t even thought about wedding insurance, but I recently chose to forgo vacation insurance for our honeymoon for similar reasons. I’ve gone on lots of vacations before without insurance and after thinking about it I just didn’t feel it was necessary, and a lot of the stipulations/reasons you’d need it didn’t apply to us. Might one of us get really sick/injured and not be able to go? Yes, but that’s a VERY VERY small chance and I suppose I decided it was worth the risk.

We are getting wedding insurance. Most venues cover the insurance themselves but since our venue is almost never used for weddings they don’t cover it. Our insurance is mainly going to be for property/injury coverage. So, if someone falls and breaks their leg, we aren’t liable.

Woo, an insurance sounds like a bit too much, but I understand why some people do it, specially in case someone’s in the military.

We are getting wedding insurance that covers it all that is the only option in Canada our venue requires liability insurance so it’s not a choice and yes I do want to be covered for an emergency it’s one of the most expensive days of our lives I want my money back or most of it if a vendors does not show up. I saw a video online where a wedding photographer backed up into a fountain an fell in with all his equipment I want the money there to replace those photos and memories because how is he going to recover from that re enacting wedding costs rental etc too Better safe than sorry in my eyes

I am kind of kicking myself for not getting wedding insurance since our venue has shut down and they owners are contemplating bankruptcy which means no deposit returned…

We were required to get insurance for our venue and I doubt we would have gotten it if it were not required.

With an NYC wedding planned for November, I’d planned to buy insurance for weather reasons. After last year’s October blizzard, I’m not taking any chances, especially since my parents and sisters will be coming in from out of town. What actually clinched it for me though, was when my FI called me from an ambulance a couple weeks ago, after being in a motorcycle accident. Thankfully, he is okay, but it was a good reminder that anything could happen in the weeks leading up to the wedding, and I don’t want to be out all that money if it does. I bought wedding insurance the next day after he was discharged home.

Whenever I mentioned that our wedding was at the beginning of September on the coast of Rhode Island, I inevitably got the “tilted head look” followed by: “aren’t you afraid of a hurricane?” After the debacle of Hurricane Irene last September, we thought seriously about it, but in the end, we only get REAL hurricanes around here about once every 20 years or so, so we’re rolling the dice, and taking our chances WITHOUT insurance. Gawd, I hope we win!!

Our venue required insurance – but my parents home owners would cover the necessary insurance for possible people injuries – I wasn’t worried about loss of the other stuff. My man is in the military but I had a clause written in every contract about moving the date or at least some type of refund if do to military requirements.
Insurance isn’t the only way to go. You may want or need the vendor – but they also need customers and as long as it isn’t ridiculous, why not ask for a reasonable clause. All they can do is deny you. And that did not happen in any of our vendors.

In Australia there are little to no companies that offer wedding insurance so I have decided to trust my vendors and hope for the best!

I actually work in the insurance industry, but never even thought about purchasing it for the wedding. I am definitely scared about having a hurricane the weekend of the wedding, but so far it’s been a fairly calm hurricane season, and hopefully that continues.

I’m not too concerned about insurance…but, I’m also years out from planning my wedding*, so let’s see if my paranoia get the better of me. :-P

*Yepp. I’m one of those women who loves weddings, but is nowhere near getting married.

Just for some insight, a family friend purchased wedding insurance for her wedding thinking she would never need it but just in case. Turns out her fiances ex had been hired to their reception venue as a server a couple weeks before the wedding (yes she got a job there on purpose she was the bitter crazy ex-girlfriend type). During the reception the girl stole all of their cards/cash/checks. The girl was fired, the checks were cancelled and the insurance company gave them back thousands in cash that had been stolen!

Yep, we got wedding insurance. My parents had one day of liability insurance for our venue added to their homeowners policy. That’s literally all the detail I can remember…hopefully we won’t need it!
