Is anyone else watching the new wedding show on TLC, Randy to the Rescue? As a self-proclaimed addict of all things TLC (Sister Wives, anyone?!!), I shocked myself by NOT really loving this new spin on the wedding-dress show. That said, I would watch Randy any day of the week; he’s adorable and genuine, and he knows his bridal gowns, but the show itself is a little stiff and slow moving. Mr. Sword would argue that all wedding shows are slow moving (rude!).

So on Randy to the Rescue they help women find their ideal wedding dresses and then doll them up with wedding-day hair and makeup. The brides are then given a “bridal blueprint” to follow so they can recreate the same look on their actual wedding day.

After watching the hairstylist transform just a few girls I’m suddenly obsessed with wanting to try something new for my Big Day: HAIR EXTENSIONS. I saw two brides in a row get temporary hair extensions, and the change was so drastic and wonderful that it made me think maybe I should give it a try! Of course I’ve known about extensions, but the thought never crossed my mind that it was something I could try until seeing it done on this show.

Here’s my issue: I have suffered with stick-straight, fine, limp hair my entire life. I’ve always been jealous of people with curly, thick hair and I know “the grass is always greener on the other side,” because most people with curly hair wish theirs would lie flat! I have always pictured my hair down and curly on my wedding day. The biggest issue with this is that my hair rejects curl in a BIG WAY. Case in point: I tried to curl my hair for our engagement party and it was flat by the time we got to the bar! My current plan is to simply load on the hair gel and hairspray, but it might be time to rethink that plan.

Here is my everyday hair. Notice the kink on the one side and disregard the overall grossness of the photo. This was taken at my birthday party a few years ago. And no, I wasn’t even drunk. People don’t believe me, but sometimes I use a flat iron to straighten my already super-straight hair to avoid it looking like this all the time.

This is kind of what I’m thinking my hair could look like if I got extensions. So lovely.

While I want to look like myself on my wedding day, I really want to look like a better, fancier version of myself. In my head, I never envisioned an updo because I rarely pull my hair back in everyday life. I wear my hair up if I’m camping or if I’ve just been to the pool and my hair is wet, and that’s about it. I’ve just always preferred my hair down.

Mr. Sword has always had a thing for my hair when it’s curly, so for that reason alone I’d love to have it down and curly!

After minimal research I’ve figured out that I would definitely be going with the clip-on kind that you can take out after the wedding (as opposed to gluing them in), and I’ve discovered the blonde extensions seem to cost more than brunette extensions. Really? Any hairstylists out there that can help fill me in? I know hair extensions would be a pricey endeavor, but they seem to add so much volume and curl that perhaps they’re worth it to achieve the curly princess hairdo I’m dreaming about! Plus, wouldn’t I get to keep my clip-ons for further use?

Has anyone used extensions before? Are they worth it? Do you think they would enhance my bridal look? Help me, hive!

Oh, hi, hair twin! I can’t help you bc I’m going with an updo. I thought about curling my hair for my bachelorette this weekend, but I know it will be straight again by the time I order my dinner. Harumph.

Miss Sword,

I actually bought extensions for the exact same reason, I always pictured my hair down and curly. I went to Sally’s and bought my extensions, real human hair, and I bought the ones without clips on a long, long strip, it was cheaper to cut the sizes I wanted and to sew in the clips myself, in the end I think it cost $60 CAD. I really had fun with them, they are definately not just a 1 time use. But in the end I decided to wear my hair up.

I would reccomend them…but definately play with them before the big day, I found them really warm and heavy, I don’tknow if I could handle them for 8 hours.

I bought extensions in January with plans to use them for my wedding in 2 weeks. I’ve used them like every weekend since I bought them, LOVE the long curly hair look that my thin, fine hair can’t achieve! I am doing an updo with the extensions though, just to get a full head of curls! Love your inspiration photos though, they almost make me want to wear my hair down instead!

I have the same hair. But mine’s red (sort of a golden strawberry) and so I can’t ever find hair extensions to match. Le sigh.

I have the second style on my inspiration board!! I love long hair! And I feel prettiest with my hair down and curled. Although my hair is kind of long, I love extensions for volume. I´ve had the glued in kind before, and I liked them but…yeah, not doing it again ($$$). I went to a beauty trade show, bought a pack of hair and clips, and cut and sewed them myself. I recommend it! I spent like $110 USD total, for the fancy kind. Nothing intensive youtube searching can’t teach me.

I know you are in Chi, so am I- I have asked my hair dresser and she said you can go to a giant hair shop at Montrose and Broadway and they sell the fancy clip ons for way cheap. She said it is an easy place to spot since it is so big and across from a Dunkin Donuts. That is where I am planning to go for mine.

Good luck :)

I had extensions on my wedding day (clip ins) and it is totally worth it! My hair stylist got them for me and dyed them for me…so for the girls out there that say they are not in your color, a good hairstylist will be able to dye them to your liking! I have dark brown hair, so she added a little red to the extensions so my hair style would be noticed more…so awesome!

I’ve never worn hair extensions cause my hair is so long already, but I love your hairstyles! Very princess-y (in a good way)!

Never used extensions, but I agree with Tea Lover try to get them before the wedding so you can get used to the feeling and weight of them.

@Miss Treasure: Hi Hair Twin! Have a great bachelorette party this weekend!
@Tea Lover: This is really good advice! Our wedding will be a pretty long day so I will definitely want to do a trial run!
@thebestisyettocome: Cool, thanks for the tips!
@Miss C-Bee: Wow, thanks! I’ll have to check that place out!
@Mrs. Pony: Yay cause that’s what I’m going for, tiara and all I think. Wow, I’m 5. :)

I am also addicted to TLC. Weird that I’m excited for “19 Kids and Counting” to start again? But a piece of advice for extensions, be careful not to go too long. I have really long hair, and it limited the hairstyles I could do because of the weight.

You should read my post I wrote about my hair extensions. I ordered from Hair Kandy and they were awesome! They are clip ins and I definitely recommend those oppose to the other types :)

Get the extensions! I got extensions, clip ons, even though I had an updo they really helped to make my hair style more dramatic. My tip would be to make sure you use real hair, not synthetic, and do a trial run to make sure they are going to work with what you want!

I spent $100 on clip ins for my wedding and LOVED them in my trial. I haven’t warn them since, but intend to once the wedding is over.

My advice is to buy the extensions without the clips and sew them on yourself. I do this ALL the time. It’s very easy, you can buy clips at Sally’s, and it is WAAAAAYYYY cheaper. Only thing you’ll need to do is have a hairstylist cut them properly but I would definitely do it this way to save some money and you will have more options of color as well!

** I also live in Chicago and I buy my extensions at a place called Beauty Max — HUGE selection and very well priced **

I had really long hair in the beginning of the year, like almost down to my butt and cut it super short (to my shoulder) so I will be wearing extensions for my wedding in October :) I say do it!

I swear, I could have written this post. I’m aiming for half-up, half-down with curls but I am so terrified of what it will end up like. I’m glad my stylist offers a Trial in the package I chose, but I know that I am going to be SO disappointed if it doesn’t work out the way I envision. I’m definitely considering extensions now. . .

@Mrs. Doe: Awesome, thanks for the tips!
@Miss Fairy: ohh, I can’t wait to see pics!
@StephK527: haha, I love it, we’re so similar! The trials are key! I hope yours goes well!

Definitely do the extensions. I ordered mine from foxy locks extensions (a company in England) and they have tons of shades. You can even email and picture of yourself and they tell you which shade to buy. I went with Beach blonde and was incredibly happy. Good luck!
