Sock in My Hair?!?

August 15th, 2012 @ 2:50 pm by Mrs. Beanstalk

I am currently in love with sock buns (also called doughnut buns)! I just love how elegant and classy this hairstyle is.

What I find so fascinating about this updo is that it can be achieved by using a single sock! Yes, you heard right…a sock! That’s all it takes (and some practice, of course). Now, this is not a new trend or hairstyle…it’s been around for a while, but I have to admit, it’s completely new to me! A while back Miss Potion mentioned the sock bun, and I had no idea what she was talking about (sure, I’d seen girls rocking buns on top of their heads, but I had NO idea that they were made from socks…or purchased hair doughnuts).

For a great tutorial check out Wedding Chicks.

You can customize the bun to fit your personality or wedding-day style. You can have a sleek bun on top of just like Lauren Conrad, or you can place the bun lower down on your head. You can also choose to have a looser bun and/or braid the ends! You can use a small sock to yield a cute petite bun, or opt for a beefier bun and use a thicker sock (or even a leg warmer)! There’s so many ways to rock this look and make it your own!

LOVE this look on Hilary Duff. It isn’t your traditional sock bun (the hair is combed over instead of giving the appearance that it swirls around), but I still totally am crushing on it! I am a HUGE Duff fan (loved Lizzie McGuire), but I have to admit, I wasn’t loving this hairstyle when I first saw it on her a few years ago. I thought it was so strange! Maybe now that I’m planning my own wedding I have found a new appreciation of a simple sophisticated updo!

I think I just might have found my wedding hairstyle! Remember, I was torn between wearing it up or letting my natural curls hang loose? I’m leaning on the pulled up side and am thinking this just might be the perfect style! It just seems so regal and bridal in my eyes (not to mention it will guarantee a fuss-free hair night!). I haven’t decided anything for certain yet, but I am totally digging this chic updo.

Grainy iPhone photo of me and my first ever attempt at a sock bun! It’s a little messy, but you get the idea! If I did do it for my wedding, I’d have it a bit tighter (and no flyaway hairs!).

How are you wearing your hair on your big day? Any other brides thinking of rocking a sock bun?

I was thinking of using this style for our engagement shoot next week – it looks like something I can put together on my own – which is a necessity! It looks great on you!!

This is my go-to when I don’t know what to do with my hair!
I even did it for a wedding recently, but left some longer bangs in front for a different look.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!! I started by using a sock, but it didn’t hold as well..I bought a hair doughnut at CVS or Walgreen’s and it is AWESOME!! They also have them really cheap at H&M and Claire’s..The best part is they have different colors and different sizes!!! :) Also, if you do this style when your hair is very slightly damp and keep it in over night, you can wake up, let it down and you have ringlet curls:) I have tried it before…however, you have to try it out a few times so you get the hang of it and how to avoid crimps from your hair tie..Love this look!!!

I bought a hair doughnut at H&M and now the giant sock bun is my go-to fancy hair-do! I won’t be going it at my wedding, but I have worn the hairstyle to my friend’s bachelorette and another friend’s wedding. I had to take a break from the sock bun so my pictures didn’t all look the same!

This is my usual hair do, lol but my SO got bored..so now it’s all curly. :)
(I didn’t mind, I know it’s not good for you to leave your hair in the same style for too long)

PLEASE DO THIS. I want to see a “real” bride pull this off (as opposed to a celebrity lol) I wish I could make my hair cooperate for this style…I’ll have to go look for a small ‘donut’ at claire’s!

We used to wear these for my competition cheerleading squad in back in high school! Except there was a lot more gel involved so they were not quite so glamorous.

I am wearing a sock bun right this second, lol! I love the look, but can’t pull it off for the wedding day- it adds a little more volume than I want.

I did this for my bachelorette party! It took me a while to get it down, but I love the look. It actually gives some volume to my fine, limp hair.

The hair do-nut is my favorite thing for a quick, pulled together look. I picked one up to use when I was in uniform since my natural bun is kind of sickly looking, but now I wear it all the time!

I’m so jealous of this look! I doubt my hair would ever, ever cooperate so I have to go with what my FI and I jokingly call The Slut Bun: just a bunch of hair, piled on top of the head, maybe lazily looped through the ponytail holder once.

Doing this for the wedding! I have fine hair and my buns always look skimpy, but the sock bun gives me a nice meaty bun. Love it! I think I’m going to do the bun the night before to get a head full of volume and curls, have it down for the ceremony, and then put it back up into a sock bun for the reception.

@Amsy28: I heard about the sock bun curls!!! I’ll have to try that! I need to look into buying a hair doughnut because using a white sock isn’t ideal lol

I used a leg warmer yesterday to make an even bigger bun… It looked really cute and full!!!
