DIY Wedding Makeup

September 7th, 2012 @ 7:20 am by Mrs. Bracelet

Somewhere between always doing my own makeup (I’ve never had professional makeup) and the difficulty of meeting with vendors when one isn’t local, I decided to do my own wedding makeup. I don’t wear much on an everyday basis, but glam it up for special occasions.

My main makeup goal was to look like myself, “only better.” The photo below comes closest to what I was envisioning: a natural look with a bit more definition around the eyes.

I was aware, however, that I didn’t have the eye makeup to create this look. And as I spent my summer in Boston, I made a trip to MAC (oh, how I wish that Montana had fancy stores like this). I explained to the makeup consultant what I was looking for and threw in some celebrity shots for good measure.

I like Michelle’s well-defined eyes, though with a bit less eyeliner and no fake eyelashes. (I’m not against fake eyelashes, I just don’t have any experience with them and don’t want to experiment on my wedding day.)

Based on the above photos and my description, my makeup artist came up with the following eye makeup for me:

How-to chart = neat!

Combined with some lipstick, blush, and foundation from my makeup collection, it ends up looking like this (completely DIY):

Sorry for the teeny photo—will post larger versions soon!

What are you planning to do for your wedding-day makeup? DIY or professional?

I’m not sure what I’ll end up doing. I’ve gotten my makeup done before and I’ve always thought that I can do a better job myself. lol

You look great!

I’m doing DIY following Mrs. Rainbow’s tutorial (I hate strangers touching my face), and I’ve been practicing every chance I get.

I’m also going for eyelash extensions…I’ve tried putting on my own false lashes and it was hilariously difficult for me!

Okay first off, your foundation and blush is beautiful. Beautifully applied and you clearly know how to work with your skin.

That said, I am thinking the consultant steered you a little wrong.

Not that it looks bad – far from it! But if you are looking for the drama around your eyes that are in your inspiration photos, I think it’s about a little more than eyeshadow.

It looks like from the thumbnail you have blue eyes, and the standard advice for women with blue eyes is to use brown eyeliner and mascara, because supposedly black is too harsh. I think this rule is silly. Brown eyed women can use brown product, and blue eyed women can use black. It’s all about the effect you’re going for. If you want soft, desaturated, and natural, go with brown. If you want drama and impact, go for black.

She also, according to her diagram, suggested a liquid liner, a tight line with a slight wing, and no smudge or underlining. No underlining is, again, standard advice for women over 25, because supposedly that extra millimeter of pigment will draw undue attention to our wrinkles so deep you could plant corn in them.

Again, I think it’s hogwash. An underline makes makeup look more dramatic and accentuates the whiteness and brightness of the eye.

To more accurately replicate the look, I’d suggest switching to a black pencil liner with a smudge attachment. The thickness of the line you’ve been using for your top lid, do on the bottom to approximately the position of the pupil when your eyes are looking forward. On the top lid, go a little thicker and use the smudge attachment to blend it out just a little.

To the shadow, I’d suggest adding a dab of a highly pigmented, sheer white to the tear duct and blending it out – it makes a huge difference when pulling light into your eyes.

I’d also encourage you to re-think your stance on false lashes – they’re super easy to use! If you’re concerned, you can always buy a cheap pair at CVS and practice with them in advance. But if you decide against them, go with a black plumping mascara and apply around 3 coats. Use a business card to hold the lashes up between applications so you really coat every side of the hair. If you’d like, you can use a bit of brown mascara on your bottom lashes as well – I’d advise against black here because even the best waterproof mascaras will run a little, and it’s your wedding day! So you’ll probably be crying and you don’t want raccoon eyes.

Lastly, the great ignored makeup zone on many women’s faces is the brow line. But a poorly defined brow will draw attention away from even the most beautifully made up eyes, and conversely, you can get away without a lot on your eyes if you have a strong brow.

You look like you have fair brows, yes? In your case I’d suggest getting a brow pencil in a shade lighter than your brows, and a brow powder that’s maybe a shade darker. Draw in the brow line with the pencil, and fill it in with the powder using an angled brush, and even seal it with a little brow sealer or mascara if you want! Here is a great tutorial (not made by me, just so you know!).

At any rate, I think you’re going to look lovely on your wedding day.

Wow! All this How-To is making me think I can DIY my makeup. And I would really like to do that because then I have a skill I can use for any special occasion.
Thanks for all the tips ladies!

I could never DIY my makeup. I am so bad at it. Probably because I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis… I’m really impressed with anyone who can pull it off. Even with the tiny picture, yours looks really good!

Like Mrs. Castle, I don’t really wear makeup everyday, so I handed my face over to a pro. But yours looks really good! I can’t wait to see a bigger picture of it!

I’m going to DIY my make-up, too, and I really like the how-to chart they gave you for eyes! I’m planning to head to Sephora for a similar consultation. Not to hijack the comments, but does anyone know if Sephora will provide something like this? I’m not sure if we have a MAC store around here…

@Crindy: I never noticed Mrs. Rainbow’s tutorial. Thanks for pointing it out to me!
@Sarah: I’m really going for a natural look – hence the make-up artist created a look to my specifications, which I really like a lot. Thank you for your suggestions, however – I’ll keep them in mind for a party night or such.
@Miss Potion: Sephora does do consultations. I’m not sure whether they charge something. I just walked up to the MAC counter and asked for assistance. The consultant said she could give me advice and show me how-to as long as there were no other customers.
@Mrs. Coyote: Only a few more days!
