We’re working with a modest budget to plan a long-distance wedding full of handmade details, Harry Potter references, and, most importantly, lots of love. I could spend an entire afternoon watching Food Network while shopping for shoes online, while he’d prefer to pwn some n00bs on Halo while blasting Deadmau5 on his stereo. I taught him how to swing dance and he taught me to appreciate Tolkien; he introduced me to LOST and I introduced him to the BBC’s Sherlock. I’m a Gryffindor, he’s a Ravenclaw, and we can spend hours discussing and debating the finer points of Rowling’s masterpiece. We’re so excited to be setting out on this adventure and I can’t wait to share all the details with you!
About Mrs. Potion

Citizen Bride

October 1st, 2012 @ 11:01 am by Mrs. Potion

Our wedding is the first weekend in November for various reasons, including the fact that it’s a holiday weekend (Veteran’s Day). We plan to make the drive down to Alabama the Monday before with all the Wedding Crap, as I’ve named it, so there’s plenty of time for last-minute preparation and (hopefully) some relaxing.

Those of you playing along at home will probably notice that the Monday before our wedding is the day before Election Day here in the good ol’ U S of A. As in, we’ll be out of town on Election Day. Absent, if you will.

As much as I would like to be truly apathetic about the state of partisan politics in this country, this truly is an important election, and I firmly believe that everyone should educate themselves and then VOTE, not because we have the right but because we have the responsibility.*

So Friday I mailed off my application for an absentee ballot, which will hopefully arrive soon, so I can fill it out and mail it back in before we leave for the wedding!

Fall brides—did you have to make arrangements to do your civic duty because of your wedding date?

*Please note: This post is NOT intended to spark a political debate. It’s merely a “Hey, this whole wedding thing is really affecting EVERYTHING, isn’t it?” remark and, as I know other people get married in October/November, I’m wondering if anyone else experienced something similar. So please, DON’T say anything about your preferred presidential candidate in the comments—I’d like Weddingbee, of all places, to be free of political ads. Also, major apologies if the above YouTube video is preceded by a political ad—they’re like nasty, deadly viruses, infecting everything with a screen…

Great video! I always argue that if you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain about the state of the nation’s political affairs. And who doesn’t like to complain? But if you don’t vote, you can’t whine, or you’ll be a nasty hypocrite—and nobody likes a nasty hypocrite!

Love this post, you and I are date twins, and my FI and I are stressing out about getting to the polls the week of our wedding! Our state is election at the polls only… I’m trying to figure out if there’s anyway we can get a mail-in ballot. Yay for voting!

I was pressuring my FI this very weekend to file for his own absentee ballot (“I can see you, you’re on a computer right now. Take 5 minutes away from what you’re doing so can get your paperwork in time!”)

As a fellow resident of VA, one of the COOLEST things about living in a swing state is you feel like your one little vote matters. Another great option to look into is voting absentee in person (sounds weird, I know). There’s a million different ways to qualify, and it basically just lets you vote at your own polling place ahead of time if you’re going to be away from your county on Election Day (as well as a bunch of other reasons). Shouldn’t let travel for wedding planning or any other reason get in the way of your civic duty!

I’m getting married Oct. 13…in between the election and Oct. 9, the cut-off date to change your name for your voter registration. It’s complicated things, to say the least. I even managed to get the people at the local board of elections scratching their heads over what I should do.

In the end, I applied for an absentee ballot with the advice that I shouldn’t update my voted reg until after Nov. 6. They also suggested I could try sending in my voter reg update early with “valid Oct 13″ in the margin, but that made me nervous because my social security and license won’t be updated until late in the month.

I voted for the CA primary on my wedding day and had my MOH bring the ballot for mailing down to the lobby. It was very important to me and Mr. G. So I did.

I agree with @Valdrine: and I often say that if you don’t vote you can’t complain! :D Great post and great reminder Potion!
