Trash the Dress II: Switzerland

A while before we got married, I asked Mr. Funnel Cake if he would get dressed up again and do a trash-the-dress shoot with me in the Swiss Alps. I had this image of us + mountains that I couldn’t get out of my head.

You remember my photographer friend who shot our engagement? He was kind enough to drive us to a mountain one day and ride the gondola up to take some photos. Warning: I may or may not have been slightly very hungover…

001

Originally I wanted to do the photos right when we got back from our honeymoon in December 2011, but it was getting too close to Christmas and my friend wasn’t available.

002

Later on in January and February, we were waiting for snow. When the snow finally appeared, Switzerland started having some record low temperatures for recent years.

When it was -8ºC/17.6ºF in the city and -25ºC/-13ºF in the mountains with a mean windchill factor to think of, I figured that I would be stupid to try and go to the mountains wearing only a wedding dress. That’s just asking for frostbite.

003

When March rolled around I started worrying that the snow was melting. We were running out of time before the skiing season would die down, so we booked some time with my friend and picked out a mountain that Mr. Funnel Cake and I had already climbed up together.

004

I happened to have a lot of champagne and wine the night before our photo shoot…and I woke up feeling kind of terrible. I thought about canceling, but this was our last chance of snow for the season so I sucked it up and prepared my hair and makeup.

It was definitely an effort to put my tight corset dress on again while I felt hungover. I felt like I couldn’t breathe when Mr. Funnel Cake tied the dress, so I made him loosen it a TON.

005

We drove around two hours on some very winding roads to get to the location, and there were a few times I thought I was going to either suffocate or lose it. But I made it…and we all rode the gondola up to paradise.

006

We were incredibly lucky with the weather. As you can see, we had clear blue skies and the mountains were fairly clear as well.

007

We did not anticipate that it would be SO blindingly bright on top of the mountain. This was really a problem, folks.

Both of us had the hardest time keeping our eyes open without squinting hard for photos. We kept counting to three and trying to open our eyes wide, which resulted in a lot of terrible pictures. In my dire state, I was struggling particularly with the sun and looking pleasant.

008

Thankfully Photoshop hides a lot, and for the most part you can’t tell that I wasn’t feeling too great.

009

It was cold on top of the mountain when the icy wind blew, but when the sun shone down it was actually fairly warm so we didn’t suffer too much. I was totally wearing snow boots, by the way, so my toes were toasty compared to Mr. Funnel Cake’s.

010

I decided to wear my lace jacket almost the entire time because I didn’t feel like I had enough pictures in it on our wedding day. I mean, I paid so much money for it, I might as well get my money’s worth, right?

011

For this shoot I wore my second Etsy necklace that hadn’t made a debut at the wedding or my other trash-the-dress shoot.

012

In the morning I ran to the store to buy flowers for a hasty bouquet. In retrospect there is a little too much green and not enough blooms, but it doesn’t really matter now, does it?

013

I curled my hair the day before using my DIY curls and decided it was the perfect day to wear my hair down for another twist.

014

I had also brought a colourful shawl and pair of gloves to keep warm when I got too chilled. Mr. Funnel Cake was wearing Merino wool beneath his suit.

015

The mountaintop was fairly crowded because of the great weather, and everyone who saw us thought we were getting married that day because it was a Saturday. We had so many people congratulating us and taking pictures of us when they thought we weren’t looking. (People are weird.)

016

Many people just assumed we did the civil union on another day as you do in Switzerland and that today was the “big wedding day.” We played along for fun. It was like getting married all over again. (If you just count the part where you walk around in a big white dress and people point at you…)

Because we didn’t plan any professional photos for the civil union in Zürich, I’m really glad we took the time to put our wedding clothes on again when we came back. Now we have some special photos in both of our countries!

Mrs. Funnel Cake’s POA: Don’t drink (so) much the night before your TTD shoot or your wedding, for that matter. I couldn’t imagine feeling like this on our big day. Another reason not to do bachelor/ette nights the day before the wedding!
