Dealing with Dad

October 9th, 2012 @ 1:24 pm by Mrs. Buffalo

Now let me preface this with a disclosure that I love my daddy. He means everything to me. But I’m also a realist, and he is difficult to deal with. He’s 60 years old, and he is who he is; he won’t change his ways for anyone, and I love him how he is. BUT when it comes to planning a wedding (not his, I may add) he is not exactly a team player. Mr. B and I are financing our wedding on our own, and we aren’t asking our parents for help. So, in my opinion, the little things they are asked to do (i.e., find somewhere to stay, attend the rehearsal, and wear wedding appropriate attire) should be a piece of cake, right?

THIS is my dad! Only trade sweats for his Levi’s.

My dad is a jeans, polo, and boat shoes type guy. Maybe throw in his yacht club vest. He hates dressing up. HATES it. Last time I got married, he huffed and puffed about what I wanted him to wear for months until eventually purchasing a suit to wear (defiantly not wearing the tuxedo I wanted him to). BUT, knowing my dad, I was thankful he made the effort to wear a suit at all.

This time, being on a mountain and all, the wedding has a much more laid-back, casual feel. I mean, hey, Mr. B isn’t wearing a tux—he’s not even wearing a full suit! So I’m not exactly going to try to force Dad into wearing something more than the bridal party. Plus, what Mr. B and his guys are wearing really isn’t age appropriate for Dad (in my honest opinion). So, long story short, Dad lucked out. I even went as far as to tell him he could wear a casual suit (providing they had prior approval). We shall see what he deems as “casual-wedding appropriate” when his approval day rolls around.

Is there someone in your family who is difficult to coordinate with when it comes to wedding attire? Did you require approval on your parents’ wedding-day outfits?

My dad jokes he’s going to my wedding in his baseball-cap, shorts and tennis shoes, my mom assures me she’ll get him to wear a suit. I hope she wins.

I don’t know if it’s useful, but try not to stress about it. My wedding coordinator (friend) was impeccably dressed for my Sunday Afternoon Wedding… and her husband (who had an invitation) showed up in a nice black t-shirt and dark jeans.

The thing is, I have NEVER seen him in anything else, even for church. He wouldn’t be himself if he didn’t wear jeans. Yeah, he looked a little funny in context of everyone else, but that reflected on him, not on the rest of us.

I know it’s not the same as a father who won’t get with the program, but these days it seems most anything goes. Everyone will smile bemusedly to themselves and say, “Yup, that is SOOOO like him to wear _________.”

So funny, for me, it was the opposite. Just TRY to tell my Dad not to wear a tux (that he owns). Nope. All the boys were in tuxes so it looked great.

I had to buy my dad a suit and basically harass him until he agreed to wear it. I know formalwear isn’t the most comfortable, but I wish dads wouldn’t fight it so much!

Oh boy.. can’t wait to see what he ends up wearing! ;) My dad joked around that he was going to wear a NFL Ravens tie with his suit to our wedding.. only I really wasn’t ever 100% sure that he was, in fact, joking. (Have no fear, he wore a very appropriate navy blue one!)

My Daddy looks very dapper in a tux and was happy to go rent one for the event.

My SIL, however, is another story. Both of them, actually. My brother’s wife just can’t dress herself. She tries, but she either looks 12 or 62. I solved that by making her my MOH and choosing a very classy dress, shoes, and necklace for her (she tried to wear a gaudy silver blingy headband, mom put a stop to it).

My other SIL, my BIL’s wife…. we joke that there isn’t a picture of her without her underwear showing. Usually a bra strap, back, or top of a cup, but we’ve all seen worse. She’s tiny and fit and wears next to no clothes all the time, so I should just be happy she wears something under those minis, I guess. She wore a little black dress. She looked great, and we can still joke about her brastraps.

My FSIL/BM is the difficult one when it comes to dressing – unfortunately. She has definitely NOT loved choosing a dress, and I’m concerned that day of, she may not be happy about the photos either. :| I hope your daddy turns up in something great, because my daddy is threatening a camo tux! Haha

Is “daddy” a southern thing?!

@lealorali: “Yes, ma’am, “Daddy” is definitely a southern/Texas thing. I wasn’t even close to mine but still refer to him as such. The male parent is also generally referred to as “your daddy” by the female parent, as in “Go tell your daddy dinner’s ready.” Parents do not have proper names, they are “your mama” or “your daddy.” The meanest thing we can say to our kids as divorced moms is “Now you’re acting like your daddy.” Now that I’ve typed that out, it’s sounding bad, but at least in the rural part of Texas I’m from, that’s how it’s done.

I was worried that my dad was going to be similar, but he actually was happy to wear a suit because he knew it was just one day! Your dad sounds like he may be more comfortable at your wedding this time around though!

LOL my dad is a jeans, rugby shirt, and boat shoes kind of guy too. I can’t imagine him all dressed up (although I know he did it for my sister’s wedding 10 years ago) for my wedding, but he won’t have much of a choice. He’ll do it because he likes me, but hopefully we can find something he’s fairly comfortable in as well!
