The Ring and (My Enemy!) Resizing

October 10th, 2012 @ 1:59 pm by Mrs. Otter

Oh, the ring. *SWOON* (Feel free to scroll right down for some ring porn!) After the proposal and announcing the engagement to our friends and family, the ring went to get sized. I was so pouty about the whole thing. Looking back now, it is embarrassing how upset I was that I had to give it away for TWO WHOLE WEEKS to go get sized.

Mr. Otter ordered my ring in a size six, the same size as my promise ring. But for some reason (the extra metal and diamonds, presumably) it didn’t fit quite right. It really, really drove me crazy that the fit wasn’t perfect. By perfect, I mean I had a finger muffin top, which I didn’t like. It was even more difficult for me because I get hot VERY easily. So even when I’m just sitting somewhere, my ring could be fine one moment and then unable to be removed from my finger the next. How frustrating!

So off it went a second time, to be re-resized. This time, instead of letting the jewelers tell me the “best size” for my ring, I told them what size I wanted the ring. Not a seven, like they suggested, but a seven and a half. This was because even at a seven I wouldn’t have been able to wear both my band and e-ring together—it would still cause the little muffin top that I couldn’t stand to begin with.

Time ticked by…two weeks, then another half of a week…finally, after reading one too many horror stories online (OK, fine, and on the Boards!) about letting these chain stores resize rings, I asked Mr. Otter if he would call and ask if my ring was there. Guess what? IT WAS! (See, I used one exclamation point, but what I really felt was more like !!!!!!!!!!!!!)

We picked up the set and they fit PERFECTLY together. In fact, they are just the tiniest bit loose. Perfect! Wearing only my e-ring right now, it spins quite a bit, but I don’t mind because I know they fit together just right! We had them sized from a six to a seven and a half (over the course of two sizings), and I’m very happy that they FINALLY fit correctly.

Personal image / I can share several more, of course. ;)

So, I know I’m not the only girl who had to give up her ring to have it sized, but now I have to ask: Did anyone else have to get your ring sized more than once? Please tell me I’m not the only one who acted just the slightest bit pathetic when I had to give my ring up for sizing…

Mine was too big when he bought it (he bought it secretly and just took whatever size they had in the store at that second). I was nervous to have it truly resized at first, so they put in sizing beads. I found them super uncomfortable and had to bring it back to get the beads taken out and have it truly resized. However my ring is from Tiffany and we live right outside NYC and just went early Saturday morning to the NYC store where they did each “procedure” same-day on site, so I only had to give it up for like…10 hours tops each time :)

I also hate the “muffin top” and prefer to have my ring a little loose and spin rather than maybe my fingers look lumpy!

Loving the ring porn!

Your ring is beautiful. My ring was big, and has always been a bit loose, so no muffin top here :P

So pretty! Our halos are actually very similar, but with different styles of bands!

mine is still a wee bit too big (and we’re almost nearing a year of being engaged). i’ve taken it in a few times to see what the timing would be, and for awhile i just didnt want to give it up (always found a reason to keep it – a holiday! a party! a trip! etc) and then for awhile they would say i should wait until after the summer to see if my finger swelled up. well…it’s october…and i never got it resized. oh well!

My FI had no idea what size I was so he bought the ring in the standard size 7. It was huge, but I wore it around with a sizer for about two months before finally giving in and taking it to get sized. I was very bummed the whole two weeks in was gone, but once I had it back it was so nice to have a ring that fit my size 4 1/2 finger! Haha, I never knew I had such small fingers.

I only had to get my ring resized (and slightly redesigned) once, luckily. I was definitely sorry to hand it over to the jeweler. In the end, it fit just dandy.

Your ring is so pretty! And I can’t imagine giving my ring up for TWO WEEKS! AWWW I’d go crazy too! My ring got sized on-site and I had to say goodbye for 3 days and I was freaking out!

I had to get mine resized when we first bought it(he proposed with fake rings from Claires so I could pick out my own, such a brilliant man ;) ) And then I had to give it back to the jeweler a few months later to make the custom guards. Cushion stone with matching guards, I wanted them to be flush. Since they had the ring and I didn’t want to send it back for a 3rd time I had them solder the guards back in April. Also didn’t want them to lose the ring during the holiday season since I’m getting married right before Turkeyday and I wanted it to be one piece for our honeymoon (Christmas).

My fiance actually took a ring from my jewelry box so he could have my engagement ring sized before he proposed, but then he left the ring sitting on his desk when he went to the jewelry store! Luckily, I’m the standard size 7 so the ring fit and I didn’t need to get it sized!

My ring was the only one in the store. So I have to get it re-sized, I am afraid to let it go though! So I haven’t been wearing it… I will promise to go next week!

I had to get my ring re-sized because the store ordered it in the wrong size! I ordered a 6 and got a 7. I was so mad that I had to give up my ring right after we’d gotten engaged. But it only took a few days and now it fits perfectly.

@BookishBelle: Sigh – jealousy! We had the option as well to do a same day procedure (surgery, if you will!) but we would’ve had to drive about an hour and pay $120. We decided in the end (especially this was our second go round) that we would just send it off. So sad, though!

@Miss Toadstool& @Miss Gray Wolf: I like mine just a tiny bit big! My fingers haven’t swelled (that I’ve noticed) but I fear putting on my set and discovering they have to be resized AGAIN! Hopefully going to a 7.5 this time took care of that. ;)

@ilikeballet: OMG! Girl, those fingers are TINY!! My grandma has a few great rings that I would LOVE to borrow, but she has tiny fingers too – a size 5. No way those bad boys are going on my finger :(

@Miss Buffalo: Jealousy, again! I wish it would’ve been three days – I was so mad that they didn’t call us to come in and get it! I’ve learned my lesson though, if they have to go back after the wedding, I plan to start calling after a week ;)

@Highness: That IS a great idea! I don’t know anyone IRL who got to pick out their own ring. I hinted heavily, of course, but Mr. O chose himself. What a cool idea of your FI :)

@Mrs. Treasure: I was fine the first time I gave it up. Well, not fine, but I expected it would need to be sized so I was okay. But when it came back and still wasn’t right, I was disappointed. Hopefully it will be fine now and will never ever leave my sight again. ;)

My husband won’t take his ring in to get sized because he doesn’t want to go w/o it.
You’re not alone. :)

Beautiful ring! I actually found a local place that would re-size my ring in an hour. They did a great job and I didn’t have to go go weeks without mine. I am not sure I could have handled that!
