About Mrs. Potion

War Paint

So, this happened this weekend:

That’s right—I splurged. Oh boy did I splurge. There’s always one item you go a little overboard with when wedding planning, and I decided makeup was an acceptable item for a bit of ridiculousness, for several reasons—I’m doing my own makeup on The Big Day, meaning I need the best quality equipment to ensure a good job; I’ve never owned real makeup brushes before, so I might as well grab some of the best; and makeup is something that I can actually use after the wedding day is over, so I’m looking at it as more of an investment, not just a splurge.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

So here’s my fresh face. Well, sorta. My fresh face with some awesome airbrush face paint at Busch Gardens! I have mild-ish. acne which really only flares up around that time of the month, but otherwise I have your typical combination skin—oily T-zone, dry cheeks. Makeup tends to look shiny on me by the end of the day, and eye makeup typically gets all creased and nasty.

Lately I’ve been using Maybelline Fit Me! concealer, blush, and powder (I don’t use foundation typically).

To solve the creased eyeshadow problem, I’ve been using Revlon Colorstay shadow and IT REALLY WORKS, Y’ALL—especially when I use a dab of concealer as a primer.

My everyday look is a bit of concealer (mainly on my crazy eye-bags), all-over powder, and enough blush to give some color to my vampirish pale skin. Most of the time, the only color that goes on my lips is a Chapstik with a subtle sparkle to it—but sometimes I go with a nude or pink lipstick.

For fancy-times, I add the eyeshadow—I use the pink and black palette and apply it exactly like the directions say on the back. (I’m no artist, but I can follow directions!) I really dig the retro look, so I only line my top lid, and I go for volume as opposed to length with mascara.

So, Sunday afternoon, I had an appointment at Sephora for a complete consultation, which lasted a good hour. The consultation was free, but I had to purchase at least $50 in products or gift cards—which was obviously not difficult to hit. I described what I was looking for in the makeup itself—something that wouldn’t make my oily skin too shiny, something that would last a good eight hours, mascara that gives volume (as I’m not confident in my ability to apply false lashes myself)—and what look I was going for, which was something that channels the ’40s with a cat eye and a bold, red lip, but otherwise a subtle color palette because it’s a daytime event.

Here’s what I got:

War Paint : wedding alexander city diy makeup IMG 283 IMG_283

That is a RED lip if I ever did see one. AND I LOVE IT. I also love what the foundation does to my skin tone—it’s beautifully even, no pores, no shine.

Here you can see how very painted on that lip is. I do like the definition that the lip liner gives, and I like how big and pouty it makes my lips, but I think on The Big Day I’m going to stick to the natural shape of my lips instead of exaggerating them quite so much. My top lip does tend to disappear when I smile, so I’ll probably define the bow like it is here, but I won’t make the bottom lip this full. This is a beautiful stain that all the salesladies were crazy about—I believe the brand is called Hourglass—and the liner is Urban Decay, with no gloss. Should I add a gloss, do you think? I kind of like the matte color. I also really like how this picture shows the way the blush makes my cheeks look like they’re glowing, and not like I’m wearing blush.

Although the concealer and highlighter make my skin tone beautifully even, it was applied a little heavy-handed. She told me I don’t need to use quite this much for everyday wear, but that a crazy amount is necessary to look good in pictures. It certainly didn’t feel like a lot of makeup—this stuff is light as a feather—but in the mirror I thought it looked like an awful lot. I can’t decide now, looking at the pictures. My gut reaction was to go lighter for the big day, but now I’m thinking it doesn’t look quite so thick on camera. What do you think?

(We went back to my place after the appointment, I changed, and we went to dinner and a movie. I figured I should use this face for a proper date night!)

The eye makeup, though…

I like the subtlety of the shadow—it’s all browns and creams, and I only ever use grays and whites, so that’s a nice difference—but the liner is a little intense. I’ll probably skip the bottom line—or at least go not-so-dark—and while I absolutely adore the cat eye, I think I’ll make it thinner. Mind you, my attempt at a cat eye with a pencil liner looked like crap in our e-photos…

War Paint : wedding alexander city diy makeup IMG 947 IMG_947

…so it’s going to take some practice to get to something this professional looking, but I still think I’m going to go for a thinner stroke to lighten things up a bit.

Finally, here’s the end-of-the-night shot, after a good eight hours or so (and a delicious turkey burger at The Counter and Argo, which was a FANTASTIC movie—you should all go see it!).

So, I got a little shiny. The eyeshadow stayed put and didn’t run at all, though. The biggest disappointment was the lip stain—it started wiping off the moment I took a bite of my burger. That will definitely need to be re-applied throughout the festivities! It didn’t get all dry and cracked like other stains do, so I appreciate that.

All in all I’d say this makeup trial was a success! Now I’m just going to need to practice a few things before The Big Day…

Did you do your own wedding makeup? Did you let a professional teach you how? Are you more of a bronzer or blush kind of gal? How do you feel about bold red lips?

i do (licensed) makeup/hair for fun. i think you did a great job. i think the lipstain looks better a litle worn in like in the last picture. i also would say if you were to change something i’d use a little less blush. but you did a great job!

and maybe a little bronzer instead of blush all together. i do that on a lot of brides who want to have a red lip.

My friend, a makeup artist did my makeup for my wedding and she was great. BUT, I love a good DIY and I think you made awesome selections and your makeup looks fabby! YOU are going for some drama with that red lip and your skin looks fresh and dewy. I think you did a great job- splurge = worth it!

I actually love your eye makeup, even with the double liner! It makes your eyes stand out.
It does look like it’s pretty heavy-handed though, as far as foundation and whatnot. I think if you went slightly lighter on the makeup, it would still turn out great in pictures.

I think it looks great and i agree with your observations – thinner lip and eye liner. Definitely a little bronzer, it looks a little too contrasted with the beautiful blush. Get some of those oil blotting papers, they are so great and don’t ruin your makeup! ( i have very oily skin). Overall i think you look beautiful! Good luck on the big day!

I adore the eyes and lip- I think for photos, you can’t go wrong with what she did during your consultation. However, I do agree that the foundation is a little heavy-handed, as well as the blush- I think persianprincess’s suggestion to add a little bronzer is a great idea (you have beautiful pale skin, but a little glow would make you look a little healthier, like in your epics).
I would also skip any hilighter on your cheeks- remember, anything shiny is going to reflect back in pictures, and so for indoor shots you’re going to get those big shiny patches on your cheeks.
Have you also thought about having your eyebrows shaped just a LITTLE bit more? It might just be the photos, but in the photo of you in the red shirt above, the arch looks a little more defined than it does in your makeup consultation, and it just opens up your eye a little more.

Great makeup! I love the boldness of the red lips! If you’re a little unsure about committing to red for your whole wedding and all your photos, you can do what a friend of mine did for her wedding earlier this year, which was a more natural lip color for the ceremony, and a red lip color for the reception afterwards. I agree with the other comments about a light bronzer. Your fair skintone is beautiful but I think it would warm your face up a little, especially with dramatic red lips.

Love the red lip. I agree with you that you could do a lighter touch on the foundation and the eyes and it would look even better.

I like your overall look and agree that a little bit less lip might be the way to go. I got most of my new make-up items for the wedding at MAC and a few at Sephora.

I think you look fab, but if you’ll be more comfortable with less makeup, you should where less. I love your hair by the way!

I think trust your gut on using less. Even in the photos it looks like too much makeup. I agree with you about the liner, the line is a little too thick. Be careful going overboard with bronzer or you will look orange, make sure to pick a very light one. I am torn about the red lip, I think it is beautiful, but when I look at the makeup that is all I see, I don’t see your face, and I think on your wedding day you may not want all the focus to be on your lips. I would go with little bit more subdued red, think one with wine hints in it, not so bright and orangey as the one you have on there. Remember, you want to look like a prettier version of YOU on your wedding day, not something completely different than what you would normally wear.

I also like the retro look with makeup.
I agree with you that the lower liner is too much and that you will look better with a bold upper lid only.

As for the red lip — keep practicing and wearing it to see how it holds up. Maybe you will find that it’s easiest to have your red lip for the photos and ceremony, and then switch to an easier-to-maintain color for the rest of the evening (such as an easy to apply tinted gloss). you are going to be very busy that night, you might find that you don’t have many opportunities to check your makeup in a mirror. then again, that’s what bridesmaids and moms are for!

I love the look! I think a bit lighter everywhere will make it more wearable in the day.

You look great and love your hair! I think if you use less blush and a tad bit of bronzer, it would look perfect for a day look!

Wow you look great! I think I agree with you with the fullness of your lips and the eye makeup does seem a little heavy on the liner.
