Mrs. Toadstool's Picture
Mrs. Toadstool, Obregon, Mexico Age and Occupation: 23, Research Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Sales Manager Engagement Date: October 1, 2011 Wedding Date: December 2012 Venue: Hacienda los Agaves About Me: I’m a born and bred Mexican girl with a severe coffee addiction, an obsession for books and an aversion for exercise. I like to plan things, so this wedding’s my dream project---I just need to remind myself from time to time that I’m the bride and not just the planner. I recently realized brown’s my favorite color as I was trying to incorporate it in every aspect of our wedding and I'm dreaming of an autumn vibe since we don’t have that around here. I’m marrying my best friend and partner in crime on the day of our nine-year anniversary! He’s an awesome, smart, fun guy who is patient, and crazy enough to spend the rest of his life with me. We’re planning our not-so-dreamy dream wedding in December in a non-traditional way and making it our own.

On Head Wear…

October 18th, 2012 @ 10:12 am by Mrs. Toadstool

When I was younger I always thought I’ll be a tiara bride. I always thought that if there was one day in your life when it’s appropriate for you to wear a tiara, it is your wedding day. However, as I grew up I realized I might not be a tiara person, and might end up acting like Amy Farrah Fowler:

I’ll be wearing a veil on my wedding day. I fell in love with idea of a mantilla-like veil (with an embroidered lace edge) attached to the back of my head (instead of over it like the typical mantilla).

At my first dress appointment, my seamstress Marisol let me tried some veils she had on so I could get an idea of how mine will look.

Excuse the blurry picture.

When looking at me with a veil on, my mom asked if I’m going to wear any kind of head pin to complement my veil. She asked Marisol to show me some of the hair pins she makes, but I must admit that, although nice, they’re really not my style. They’re a bit over the top for me, and don’t go with the soft look I’m looking for that day.

But this made me wonder if I need something else in my hair other than the veil. My mom started pushing the subject, and I started thinking about a small comb. I try to stay away from flowers because they’re not my thing. I’d love a simple and small comb, something that doesn’t look too over the top next to my beaded veil.

Marisol assured me she can make me something like one of the pictures above; the thing is, do I really want to buy a comb or pin I’ll never wear again? Some are really, really nice, but I’m not sure I’m ready to make that purchase.

I’m still on the fence.

What do you think, hive? Comb or no comb? Any suggestions of where to get an affordable comb online? (Remember, I’m foreign.)

Etsy.com

I just went and looked at the one’s on Eli Tiara on Facebook. Holy crap! Those things are ridiculously expensive!

I’ve seen similar on Etsy for $100-150.

How about some form of headband? Those look great with that type of veil.

I second Etsy – and you can definitely find something for less than $100. I’d suggest going with a hair vine, since you can form it around the hairstyle.

I ended up buying a pair of vintage shoe clips from an estate jeweler — for $30!!! I just pinned one in my hair with bobby pins.

So… my suggestion is to look outside the box. I couldn’t believe how expensive bridal hair combs were, but you might be able to find a brooch or bracelet that you like that you could pin in your hair.

Lovely pics, Miss Toadstool. I had two thoughts for you:
a) You may want a pin/headpiece/etc as a more casual look for your reception. You may not want to wear the formal veil if you have an event after the cermony.
b) I started with a birdcage veil like the picture you have, and I too thought it was too dramatic. I ended up with a small fabric flower which ended up being one of my favorite touches.

Definitely check out Weddingfactorydirect.com. Their prices are amazing and they have all kinds of stuff. I got a gorgeous headband for only about $40. Check out my gallery for a better shot of it.

Definitely Etsy. I ordered mine from a British seller, and it was about $40.

I had one made, and was so dissappointed. I did not want to spend much money on my headpiece so I went to claire’s and found a nice headband for about $12. My hairstylest did an amazing job hiding the band, and I received so many compliments the whole day about my headpiece.

I’d say get one if you think it accents your outfit. You can always sell it again after the wedding or keep it as a future heirloom.

I wanted a comb just to add a little sparkle, and I love wearing one, there are so few times you can pull it off. I would try etsy or ebay, if you don’t want to invest a ton of money into one, you can find lots of options at good prices!

All my hair pieces were given to me by a bride who called it off… Bu she got hers at Claire’s. They actually have some nice formal combs and clips because they cater to proms and such

I would try etsy, WB and other classifieds, then try to DIY if I couldn’t find what I wanted cheaply enough. Love the hair pins/combs!
