Topping It Off

Because we’re having cupcakes, I originally didn’t think we would need a wedding cake topper.

I not a big fan of wedding cake toppers with people on them. To me, they always look a little awkward, and as an interracial couple, we don’t often fit the molds of what the bride and groom look like. Thus, I always thought I’d just skip the trouble of getting a cake topper.

However, there were a couple of cake toppers I saw that made me change my mind about having one at all.

I absolutely loved the idea of getting clay animal cake toppers, but my wallet did not like the idea of coughing up $100+ for it, even if it would be super cute and we could keep it as a souvenir afterward.

Then it occurred to me, I knew someone who could make me one, and it would be even better than one I could buy. While I might be a little bit of a crafty person, I have to say I get that mainly from my amazing mother, who has always been really really really great at making things. Ever since I was little, my mom would always be making something or another. Or if I had a project I wanted to do, she was always supportive and knew the most clever ways of doing it.

She makes these really adorable amigurumi animals out of yarn. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.

 And my favorite:

She made all of those without a pattern. Yeah, she’s that good. She can just look at a picture and figure out how to make it from there.

Because she’s absolutely amazing at making things, and it’s been very difficult to have her included in the wedding planning given how far away she usually is, I wanted to give her a project that she could do at home and bring up to Boston, and that would allow her to show off all of her amazing talents.

There are some really nice amigurumi animal cake toppers online.

But let’s be honest here, there’s really only one animal they could have been.

Bears! Just look at them with their little noses and her pretty flowers. I can’t wait to have them next to our cupcakes.

I tried to give my mom free rein over the project, but I have to be honest, I am just a little too obsessive and a bit too controlling for that. (Sorry, Mom! I love you!) My mom has been soooo patient with me and my suggestions. I know they’re going to look gorgeous when they’re done.

I love the bear on the left, especially her flowers in her hair and her dress, but I wasn’t a very big fan of her snout.

I asked my mom to change the face to something more cartoon-y. So the nose will be in a different color, with the nose and mouth stitched on. The eyes will be placed on opposite sides of the nose to give it that childlike look.

The bride will still have the flowers with pearls in them in pink, but I think my mom is planning on playing around with the skirt. She might make the skirt with tulle or lace. The groom will be in a tuxedo, but I’d like the bow to be blue to better match PBear’s outfit. He’ll also have a top hat like in our STDs.

I’m really excited about how they will end up looking. I spent way too much time nitpicking and deciding about each and every detail. I’m sure I was super annoying. I didn’t realize how many details and decisions that are needed to make amigurumi animals. I have such respect for people who can imagine something and just make it. I wish I had that skill.

Did anyone get custom-made cake toppers? Did you suddenly fall in love with something you didn’t think you would have at all? Did your parents help you DIY your decor? Was it hard to give up the control?
