Let Them Eat Cake!

October 25th, 2012 @ 9:03 am by Miss Panda

Our venue has some strict rules about bringing in homemade food. I understand that it’s a liability for them to have people inside their walls consume food that may or may not be sanitary or cooked correctly. I understand that completely.

It should also reduce the amount of stress I have the last couple days beforehand, since I won’t be trying to make enough cupcakes to feed 60 people. I am excited about our possible baker anyway.

That being said, I must admit, I am a little sad about it. I hate to brag, but I have made some pretty awesome cakes in my day (many of these are collaborations with my dear MOH).

Not really cake, but panda cake truffles! I *had* to include these.

I hate giving up control of the cake to other people. I thought a great compromise would be to have a groom’s cake on the night of the rehearsal dinner. The groom’s cake is a bit of a Southern tradition that is meant to be a gift from the bride to the groom. PBear loves it when I make him dessert, and always complains that I don’t make him dessert often enough. And how can you say no to more cake? I thought this would be a great opportunity to have a cake that could be more representative of his interests.

I mean, how awesome is that companion cube? I <3 the companion cube sooo much (the potato is so not the same).

I would love to create something cute that represents him, especially since so much of the wedding represents me. I would get the chance to make some tasty dessert, and we’d have a great photo opportunity. Win win.

So imagine my surprise when I got a big, resounding no from PBear. Wait, what? Yeah, PBear didn’t want a cake that was supposed to represent his interests. He would be OK with a cake that was more representative of both of us, but not him exclusively. (But…but…companion cube! That cake can’t be a lie.)

There’s only one kind of cake that would suffice for that requirement.

It’s a 3D bear cake! How amazing is that pan? How absolutely fitting would it be to have a bear-shaped cake at our rehearsal dinner? There is a reason, after all, why we’re the Pandas.

Most importantly, this cake would use things that I already have in my kitchen. My MOH gave this pan to me a while back, and I have yet to use it. This would be a great opportunity to take it out and use it like it was meant to be. I might have to do a practice run or two as well. ;)

I hope it will be good enough for PBear. Did anyone else have a couple’s cake instead of a groom’s cake? Is this a crazy idea?

SUPER CUTE idea !!

LOVE the Pandas (pun intended)

Personally, I’d make them both Bride & Groomy… but also incorporate a bit of what makes you both you. So maybe use the sports shirt idea for the Groom but put a black top hat on him, same idea for the Bride, just make sure she has a veil !! That way it’ll show your individuality before the Wedding, and still stress that that aspect of your lives is accepted by the other and respected, and is part of who you both are and won’t be “lost” in the marriage (am I making sense ?)

Anyhow… YES these are perfect accompaniments to the Rehearsal Dinner… I say a MUST DO !!

I love that pan, I need one.
Is it weird I want the bear to be red velvet?

The potato isn’t the same! But I enjoyed playing Portal 2 nonetheless :)

Love it! I’m guessing you’re going to ice it as a panda? Are you planning to make just one, or two? Clothe them? Ooh, you didn’t give enough info for such a sweet idea (pun intended)!

If it’s a marble cake it’ll be black and white like a panda, haha :)

That is the cutest idea ever! I wanted to get Mr. T a groom’s cake for the rehearsal dinner, but it was so expensive.

I think we did a “both of us” cake in a way. We had the main cake, and then a cheesecake that was sort of a groom’s cake as that’s really his thing, but we topped it with toy dinosaurs to represent both of us (one carnivore, one herbivore, and there are a lot of long-standing dinosaur jokes). It got a lot of questions, but we liked it, and dang, it was tasty!

That giraffe was probably the most awesome, yet least tasty, cake we ever made. The burger cake, however, was delicious.

Glad to see the bear cake pan will be used for such a high profile event! When the time comes, I’ll give you some lessons I learned from making mine.

Sorry for the late response!

@This Time Round: I love that idea. I got to try it out.

@Miss Toadstool: They absolutely have to be red velvet. The panda truffles were red velvet as well. I have pictures of the truffles with a bite taken out of it, which were amazing. I love the idea of putting a strawberry jelly in it as well, so you start cutting into it, and it gushes red blood out.

@purpeley: I agree, I thought it was very well polished, and the game was very well put together. I now have an itching to pick it up again.

@ScottishMrs: to be honest, I didn’t give details, because I have no details. I have *no* idea how I want to do this yet. I really haven’t fleshed it out. any ideas are welcomed

@Miss Gray Wolf: that cake is *amazing* holy cow, talented. I’m hungry now

@TankGirl: I love that idea. It’s so sweet

@Red Poppy: thank you =)

@your MOH: yeah, the giraffe was unfortunately not very tasty. This is what happens when you use a pound cake recipe for it’s density and structural properties rather than for taste. I am excited to use the bear pan though. Maybe i’ll do a practice run for thanksgiving ;)
