Our venue has some strict rules about bringing in homemade food. I understand that it’s a liability for them to have people inside their walls consume food that may or may not be sanitary or cooked correctly. I understand that completely.
It should also reduce the amount of stress I have the last couple days beforehand, since I won’t be trying to make enough cupcakes to feed 60 people. I am excited about our possible baker anyway.
That being said, I must admit, I am a little sad about it. I hate to brag, but I have made some pretty awesome cakes in my day (many of these are collaborations with my dear MOH).

Not really cake, but panda cake truffles! I *had* to include these.
I hate giving up control of the cake to other people. I thought a great compromise would be to have a groom’s cake on the night of the rehearsal dinner. The groom’s cake is a bit of a Southern tradition that is meant to be a gift from the bride to the groom. PBear loves it when I make him dessert, and always complains that I don’t make him dessert often enough. And how can you say no to more cake? I thought this would be a great opportunity to have a cake that could be more representative of his interests.

I mean, how awesome is that companion cube? I <3 the companion cube sooo much (the potato is so not the same).
I would love to create something cute that represents him, especially since so much of the wedding represents me. I would get the chance to make some tasty dessert, and we’d have a great photo opportunity. Win win.
So imagine my surprise when I got a big, resounding no from PBear. Wait, what? Yeah, PBear didn’t want a cake that was supposed to represent his interests. He would be OK with a cake that was more representative of both of us, but not him exclusively. (But…but…companion cube! That cake can’t be a lie.)
There’s only one kind of cake that would suffice for that requirement.

It’s a 3D bear cake! How amazing is that pan? How absolutely fitting would it be to have a bear-shaped cake at our rehearsal dinner? There is a reason, after all, why we’re the Pandas.
Most importantly, this cake would use things that I already have in my kitchen. My MOH gave this pan to me a while back, and I have yet to use it. This would be a great opportunity to take it out and use it like it was meant to be. I might have to do a practice run or two as well.
I hope it will be good enough for PBear. Did anyone else have a couple’s cake instead of a groom’s cake? Is this a crazy idea?
