Shortly after a chance meeting five years ago, I moved in with Wolfman and haven't looked back since. We love music, movies, TV, and all things pop culture; we have an unspoken competition to be the first to share the latest YouTube sensation or indie song. Together, we've filled quite a few pages in our passports, but also love quiet nights in with a Game of Thrones marathon and our French Bulldog, Tonks (Harry Potter, anyone?). I'm planning a small, cozy winter wedding---think mercury glass and candle light---in the heart of DC. Our venue is a historic home with a lot of political charm, but needs a bit of work to be wedding-ready.

Our First Dance

October 28th, 2012 @ 7:56 am by Mrs. Gray Wolf

Oh man, y’all…this. I think Wolfman and I have talked about our first dance more than any other topic. More than food, the venue, the ceremony, everything. We both love music—it’s one of the things that brought us together—and with our first-dance song, we have this singular opportunity to pick a song that is “us.” Whatever we pick, we will sort of “own” forever—so we really want to get it right. Out of dozens of listening sessions to our respective iPods…here’s our top contenders:

[1] the xx, “Islands”

This song has a lot going for it. It’s a band we discovered together, have seen live, and (in my opinion) has some indie street cred. It’s short (good, because the actual dancing is something I’m not particularly looking forward to) and the lyrics work:

I don’t have to leave anymore
What I have is right here
Spend my nights and days before
Searching the world for what’s right here

Underneath and unexplored
Islands and cities I have looked
Here I saw
Something I couldn’t overlook

I am yours now
So now I don’t ever have to leave

I think it fits nicely with our meeting story.

[2] JJ Heller, “Until You Came Along”

I heard this song in some engagement video I saw a while ago, and the lyrics are PERFECT:

Nothing makes sense without you
It’s like waking up in the dark
I didn’t have a song
Until you came along

Falling in love with you was easy
You were always meant to have my heart
I was broken all to pieces
You were there to be the missing part…

And I never wanna go back
To the way things were before
You saved me and you made me yours

I especially love the “you were always meant to have my heart” line. JJ has a pretty voice, and this would be a nice slow dance. We’d probably want to shorten it as the end does drag a bit. I’m a much bigger fan than Wolfman is—he thinks it’s important to also pick an artist that represents us, and I cannot name another JJ song to save my life. Still…it’s great, so it’s still on the list.

[3] the xx, “Angels”

Another from the same band…it’s really lovely and a perfect length. Perhaps a tad too slow, but the hook is so simple that people will be able to really hear how occasion appropriate it is:

Light reflects from your shadow
It is more than I thought could exist
You move through the room
Like breathing was easy
If someone believed me

They would be
As in love with you as I am
They would be
In love, love, love

[4] The Black Keys, “Dearest”

This is a Buddy Holly cover by a band we love, it’s a perfect length, and the beat sort of lends itself to an easy, swaying sort of dance. Cute wedding-worthy lyrics:

Together, our love will grow old.
Our
love will grow old.

You may be a million miles away.
Please believe me when you hear me say, ‘I love you. I love you.’

So, what do you think? Seriously…will you pick for us?

Aw wow, what a fantastic selection of songs!! I need you to make a playlist for me! Love them all.
My personal opinion, the first xx song, although quite indie and cool it’s not a song i’d associate with a first dance (I know non typical might be what you’re going for). Angels I think has quite an atmospheric vibe, very beautiful but doesn’t grab me.
I think ‘dearest’ is really cute and quirky. Obviously I don’t know what you guys are like but I’d imagine a really sweet and fun couple having this a a first dance.
‘Until you came a long’ I think is my favorite! It gave me goosebumps straight away. I think it’s the kind of song that all wedding guests including your old great aunt could appreciate as sweet and romantic and as you say, the lyrics are perfect for how you feel when someone special comes into your life. It makes me think be on a soundtrack to a film like ’500 days of summer’.

The first one!!
I love The XX too :-) We’ve seen them live a couple of times and we were actually going to see them tonight, but the concert was canceled because of the hurricane :-(

Sorry but I am borrowing “Until you came along” :P I was going to use “Holding a heart” by A Girl Named Toby but this is so much more simple and heartfelt.

I like the first The xx song, but also think The Black Keys cover works because of the beat.
