Mrs. Blue Whale's Picture
Mrs. Blue Whale, College Park, MD Age and Occupation: 27, Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Graduate Student Engagement Date: March 10, 2012 Wedding Date: May 2013 Venue: Southern Tree Plantation in Blairsville, GA About Me: I love bright colors, glitter, sugar, cheese, tiny animals, talking in silly accents, dancing, and all things music. I love to plan things, but when it comes time to execute the plans, I tend to panic. My friends tell me that I remind them of a mix between a cartoon character and a Disney Princess. Mr. Blue Whale and I are Southerners at heart, but we’ve been transplanted to the East Coast for school. We both love barbecues, star-gazing, bonfires, music, making up nonsense words, and generally being silly. Our wedding will be a fun-filled destination wedding in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It will most certainly feature bright colors, '80s music, and glitter.
About Mrs. Blue Whale

Miss Blue Whale here! Yay!!! I thought I might be imagining things when I saw my email from Mrs. Penguin. Having been trapped alone in my apartment for many days because of Hurricane Sandy, I had to re-read the email a few times before I was convinced it wasn’t a hallucination! Thankfully, it wasn’t a mirage.

I am so jazzed to be sharing my wedding adventures with you all. It’s almost embarrassing how excited I’ve been throughout the entire planning process so far. I have to shield my computer screen from Mr. Whale sometimes so he doesn’t know how often I’m browsing Pinterest or the ‘Bee (I guess the secret’s out now…). My brain is so full of ideas and excitement that I just want to share it all right this instant. But I’m trying to take it one step at a time. And I think the first logical step is to tell you who the Blue Whales are!

So who are we?

I am a fun-loving girl who loves to make silly faces and can’t resist dancing to any song that is playing. Despite those characteristics, I’m actually kind of shy around many people. But I can’t turn off the silly faces or the random dancing, so my life tends to be full of awkward moments. (I also snort when I laugh. Yeah, the awkwardness is plentiful.)

I moved to Maryland to pursue my PhD in economics. But after working on it for several years, I finally realized that it just doesn’t make me happy. And so, after a very nervous year of auditions, I am currently pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in music education. It’s a much better fit for me! I can’t wait to be a teacher.

Mr. Whale and I met in graduate school. He’s a theoretical physicist (yeah, we’re pretty nerdy). But we actually bonded very early on over our passion for music. Mr. Whale doesn’t have any formal musical training, but he’s got a ridiculously good voice, and he’s pretty stellar at guitar too. We’re totally regulars at the hotel bar near our apartment that has karaoke every Thursday. And (get excited) you will definitely be hearing about the awesome music that is going to happen at our wedding. Expect performances from both of the Blue Whales and from our friends.

When we’re not playing music or being hard-working students, Mr. Whale and I like to relax. On any given evening, you can usually find me curled up with a book while Mr. Whale watches a TED talk. We love the shows Community, Bones, and New Girl. (I have this fantasy where I’m the third sister of Emily and Zooey Deschanel. Love them.) When the weekend rolls around and we’re looking to be more adventurous, we enjoy star-gazing, roller coasters, bonfires, baked Cheetos (not really adventurous, but we do love them), tailgating, and spending time with our friends and family. Overall, we just try to have tons of fun and laugh a lot.

Why Blue Whales?

So, I’m actually amazed by the fact that almost every bee seems to have some sort of cute reason for picking her character. I’m going to be honest. I really (reeeeeeally) wanted to be Miss Manatee. (I even put that in my application.) Mr. Whale and I are kind of obsessed with manatees. It would take an entire blog post to explain it, but let’s just say that we’ve taken things way too far. We have two very cute stuffed animal manatees names Wendy and Arby. And we adopted a manatee from the Save the Manatee club last year. His name is Chessie. His photo is on our fridge. (Honestly, this is really just the tame part of our obsession.)

OK, I know. I not Miss Manatee. But luckily, Mr. Whale and I have been expanding our love for manatees to a love for sea mammals in general. Seals. Sea lions. Walruses. So while I may not be able to be my favorite sea mammal, I can still be the largest sea mammal! And that’s pretty dang awesome. (Also, it turns out that Mr. Whale’s favorite animal when he was a kid was the blue whale. It was meant to be!!)

Well, I won’t keep blubbering on forever (whale pun!). Stay tuned for more about our wedding-planning adventures. It’s sure to be a whale of a tale!

Thanks everyone! I left my desk for a half hour, and I came back to all this love!

@Mrs. Sunhat: Thanks! I’ve never actually been to a mountain wedding, so I’m pumped to see how it turns out.

@Mrs. Hermit Crab: :) I do enjoy fun.

@Miss Lyre: Yay for teachers! A lot of teachers seem pretty jaded, so I’m glad to see there’s at least one who still loves it!
