The Wedding Colors Chose Me

November 21st, 2012 @ 9:00 am by Miss Camel

Do you ever feel like wedding planning is turning you into someone unrecognizable? I look in the mirror and I hardly know myself these days. Okay, maybe it’s not quite so dramatic, but I do want to state for the record that I’ve never been a big fan of the colors pink or orange. Then one day I was browsing one of the big wedding blogs when I saw an inspiration shoot that awoke all the silly girlishness within me. Suddenly I had to incorporate the color pink into our wedding. PINK. And peach. And salmon. And a lovely cornflower blue I’m a little obsessed with at the moment. Who was this person who wanted pink and orange tones popping up on her wedding day?

Our color scheme! (personal photo)

So what images inspired this about-face in color preference? Well, let me share them with you!

This image has it all—gorgeous ruffled garden roses in peachy, pinky hues, and that pop of blue from the delphinium. When you see the rest of the inspiration shoot, you will weep silently to yourself. At least, that’s what I did when I first saw them. You see, they seem to be the perfect inspiration for our Marie Antoinette countryside wedding theme.

Let’s ogle some more images, shall we? Mmm…wedding inspiration…

These images sent me on an insane hunt for the elusive blue milk glass you see in these photos. I now have a collection of around six or seven pieces. Ideally, I’d like to have one blue piece for each table. These images also had me second-guessing my choice to avoid using gold in our wedding palette. I am going to try to switch the gold out for small silver accents, but I’m worried it won’t have the same rich glow that these images evoke. Either way, gold is one of those colors you have to treat carefully. I don’t think I have the designer skill to balance it right without it looking garish. Besides, I think stepping away from the gold allows more of that casual countryside feel to shine through and less of the rococo gilded opulence you often think of when you think of Versailles.

Right now our centerpieces will be a mix of white milk glass, blue milk glass, and little tarnished silver pieces made up of sugar and creamer containers, and a few odds and ends I’ve found at local antique stores or the flea market. I’ve also collected some vanity trays and mirrors to use as a base for our centerpieces.

Oh, and did I mention we are going to DIY our flowers? Yeah, that too. Because apparently I am insane. I’m hoping the whimsical country feel of the wedding will mask my lack of experience when it comes to flower arranging.

So while the above inspiration images are my ideal, my Holy Grail of inspiration so to speak, I think the reality will look something more like this (obviously with more blue and less yellow):

I am actually quite proud of the collection of white and blue milk glass Mr. C and I have amassed over the past few months. That collection will require an entry of its own soon!

Did you find that wedding planning caused you to seek out colors or inspiration that you would have otherwise ignored or disliked?

I totally know what you mean! When we first began talking about weddings (before we were engaged), I was all into fall weddings, with rich reds and oranges to mimic the Canadian leaves that are so beautiful that time of day. When we actually got engaged, due to timing and availabilities, we decided on a spring wedding, and all of a sudden- pink was all I could think! We’ve ended up going a muted green, ivory and hints of pink and silver theme, but man…wedding blogs and style me pretty is enough to make any girl change her mind about pink! :)

Gorgeous inspiration. Can’t wait to see it come to life!

I know what you mean about the wedding colors choose you! Originally Adam and I were looking at Orange and Blue, then realized it looked too much like a football team and was overpowering. I am having a September 2014 wedding and we wanted to avoid fallish colors. Lo and behold, our colors are orange, green and brown.

But I love them :) I’m obsessed with the colors now. And I weep to myself everytime I see the combo.

Wonderful inspiration! (PS: you’re my new favorite bee to read from! :) I love your posts! )

1) if you had told me years ago that I would have pink in my color scheme, I would have laughed at you too. But now, omg, love, love, love. You have a lot of the same inspiration pictures I used as well! gah I’m so excited. The blue milk glass is to die for. Now, I wonder if I should try to find some myself…

2) I completely agree with you about the silver accents instead of the gold accents. I had the *exact* same thought process. I have yet to see anyone else do it though, so I don’t know if it’s really crazy.

3) omg, seriously, we should talk because I think we have the same brain. I think we have the same centerpiece ideas as well…

It sounds weird but it is true, wedding planning makes us believe we can do anything. Your inspiration is great I love the look of those milk jars.

I completely agree and love your inspiration pics! I also hear myself saying “because apparently I am insane” a lot during wedding planning discussions… it’ll all work out though. :)

I loooove milk glass! Can’t wait to see this all come together! Our centerpieces were “found” objects too and they turned out amazing.

Love your inspiration! I spent months scouring thrift stores for milk glass, and my collection come wedding time was sort of insane- but that blue milk glass is divine! Oh and I totally thought I’d have black bridesmaids dresses originally, but ended up with pastels throughout our entire wedding, so I know the 180 in color business!

@Miss Gray Wolf: I’m going to have a post about it soon, but mostly in antique stores. You never see it at thrift stores or flea markets. It’s also a little more expensive but I plan to keep most of it after the wedding, so I think of it as an investment in future home decor!

@Mrs. Elk: I actually saw your milk glass post (and I will be referencing it in a future post too!) — Honestly, I know it’s been done a lot, but collecting it has been so much fun.

@Mrs. Wallaby: I look forward to seeing them!! Sometimes I worry that my hodge podge of inspiration and ideas will not look cohesive together as there is no real way to know how it will all come together on the big day. I hope it looks good!

@StephK527: That first picture was total love for me, and I’ve looked at a LOT of wedding photos. I hope we can do it all justice in our own wedding!

@Miss Panda: Glad to hear I’m not the only one worried about using (and then cutting out) gold! It’s just so tricky to work with but I keep falling in love with light blue/gold color schemes. I will have to make it work! Do you have any pictures of mock-up centerpieces? I’d love to see yours! I want to make and post some soon.

@foolsintherain: Yes, pink and peach and champagne tones are very “in” right now and I can’t help but love them all! Your color scheme sounds BEAUTIFUL. Green is one of my favorite colors and it sucks that there was no room for it in our scheme.

I am NOT a blue person, at all. It’s not my favorite color, I don’t even like it……….. yet here I am, thinking that if I were JUST NOW starting planning, I would steal this color scheme! The blue looks just WONDERFUL with your other colors! :) I LOVE IT!!
