My type-A Virgo tendencies often cause me to drive my laid-back college sweetheart fiance batty with lists and PowerPoint presentations. I love to be crafty and do things myself, which explains why my two crazy kittens often will prance around the house covered in glitter and ribbons. When I am not bogged down with work, school, or wedding planning, I like to travel to visit my expansive family and have wild adventures with my best friends. After a rollercoaster ride of a love story, I’m ready to take that final plunge, marry the love of my life, and become a Mrs.!

Mrs. Toadstool, Obregon, Mexico Age and Occupation: 23, Research Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Sales Manager Engagement Date: October 1, 2011 Wedding Date: December 2012 Venue: Hacienda los Agaves About Me: I’m a born and bred Mexican girl with a severe coffee addiction, an obsession for books and an aversion for exercise. I like to plan things, so this wedding’s my dream project---I just need to remind myself from time to time that I’m the bride and not just the planner. I recently realized brown’s my favorite color as I was trying to incorporate it in every aspect of our wedding and I'm dreaming of an autumn vibe since we don’t have that around here. I’m marrying my best friend and partner in crime on the day of our nine-year anniversary! He’s an awesome, smart, fun guy who is patient, and crazy enough to spend the rest of his life with me. We’re planning our not-so-dreamy dream wedding in December in a non-traditional way and making it our own.

On Beauty Trials…

November 27th, 2012 @ 2:19 pm by Mrs. Toadstool

I know I’ve failed to blog about my hair and makeup, and the simple reason is I had no idea what to do about it. Of course, I pinned inspiration, but I just had a vague idea of what I wanted.

I booked my hair and makeup artists a couple months ago. I’ll be getting them done at the same place, but I booked my trials for two different days. I had to wait until I had my veil to have my hair trial, and I reserved my makeup trial for the day of our engagement shoot. (Two birds, one stone.) I had both trials last week.

My hair inspiration was very simple. I saw this picture and fell in love.

Ariana, my hairstylist (who turned out to be Aunt A, my dad’s younger sister’s, long-time friend and happens to have known me since I was little) did a fantastic job. I said soft, loose, a little messy and showed her the picture, and she did this to me:

On Beauty Trials... : wedding hair makeup obregon mexico Sam 2874 sam_2874

Excuse the bad quality and the odd face—I was very sleepy.

I LOVE it. It’s the trial run so she didn’t use as much hairspray and used too many bobby pins, just to give me an idea. After I saw the finished product she undid it and sent me home with beautiful soft curls. I’m a bad blogger and didn’t get a picture with the veil on, but it looks great. You’ll have to take my word for it.

For makeup I have an even vaguer idea. I said earthy tones and I showed her this picture.

I envy those girls who say they can leave the house without makeup, because I just don’t like it, and although I wear very little makeup and in natural colors, I wear it every day. See my natural look above for the before.

So after almost 40 minutes in the chair, I ended up looking like this.

On Beauty Trials... : wedding hair makeup obregon mexico C2 c2

On Beauty Trials... : wedding hair makeup obregon mexico Sam 2850 sam_2850

Hair courtesy of Sister Toadstool, who woke up at 7:00 AM on her day off school to curl my hair.

It’s a big change from my everyday look; it was my first time getting my makeup done professionally and it took me a second to get used to it, but I love it.

I love how my eyes look and, although I think it looks fantastic in pictures, in person the makeup looked thick. It didn’t feel that way, but it looked like I had layers and layers of it. Even Mr. Toadstool commented about it, joking that if he shook me really hard the layers would fall off my face as a mask that I could re-wear the day of the wedding. Nice, babe.

Oh and the lipstick—it lost the shine after an hour, but I had breakfast and lunch and the color was still there, so I’m very pleased about it. I just needed to retouch with some shiny lip gloss and that was it.

Fun, disgusting fact: The fake lashes are “natural,” AKA made from human hair. Yuck! The makeup artist told me it was absolutely normal, until I mentioned it felt similar to wearing someone’s clipped nails—now she’s a bit disgusted too.

Hair and makeup trial: Check! Now I know how I’ll look on the big day. (Yeey!)

Did you book hair or makeup without a trial? Did a trial keep you from booking someone for the big day? What did you do to take advantage of the nice makeup the day of your trial?

Will You Marry Me?

November 27th, 2012 @ 1:47 pm by Miss Blue Whale

So it turns out that this question gets asked twice during the engagement process. The first time is the most obvious—it’s during the proposal. But you can’t just decide to get married and then it’s done. To make it legal, there’s got to be that special person known as the “officiant” involved. And when you find the right one, you’ll have to ask the question again. :)

Mr. Whale and I didn’t even consider a religious ceremony for a second. He was raised Catholic. I was raised Methodist. But neither of us practices any kind of Christian religion. (We don’t technically practice any other religion either, but Mr. Whale is fairly spiritual, so I don’t want to say that he’s not religious at all.) Overall, the ceremony is very important to both of us, so we really aren’t willing to compromise at all on the things that we want.

Raiding Gatsby’s Attic

November 27th, 2012 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Wallaby

Are there any F. Scott Fitzgerald fans in the house?! A few years ago I read The Great Gatsby, and it was true love from the very first page. I love Fitzgerald’s writing style and I am enamored and fascinated by the lifestyles of the rich and famous of the 1920s. I would give an arm and a leg to spend an evening in Paris or New York in the 1920s. Sigh…I guess I’ll have to live vicariously through Woody Allen movies.

Hawkily Ever After: How Sweet It Is

November 27th, 2012 @ 12:24 pm by Mrs. Hawk

This may sound silly, but the part of the reception that gave me the most pause was the cutting of the cake. No, it had nothing to do with the fact that we had no idea what we were doing or that we hadn’t practiced or even discussed how we would cut it. The concern I felt had everything to do with the dreaded cake smashing.

Where Can I Marry This Guy?!

November 27th, 2012 @ 9:19 am by Miss Camel

Mr. C and I have family scattered across the country. I actually grew up in Georgia, but after my parents divorced in 1996, my dad moved out to California and 10 years later my mom relocated to Illinois with my stepfather. My mom’s side of the family is from New York and my dad’s side of the family lives much farther south around Brunswick, Georgia. Mr. C’s  family is from Michigan and Ohio. Luckily I still have my brother in Atlanta and Mr. C has his sister and brother-in-law who live about 45 minutes away from us. Without them we would be practically on our own here!

When it came time to decide where to hold the wedding, it made the most sense to have it in Georgia, which would be a neutral territory for all family members involved. Both of our families are split by divorce (this requires its own super special entry), and so it was important that everyone feel that they have an equal role in the wedding. Plus, with our busy schedules, we had no desire to plan a wedding from across the country. Destination brides, you have my most humble respect!

Where Can I Marry This Guy?! : wedding athens venues Ashford Ashford

Image via: Green Wedding Shoes / Photography by: Once Like a Spark / Venue: Ashford Manor

We also knew that we wanted to have our wedding close by; I didn’t want to be driving all around Atlanta or North Georgia searching for the perfect wedding venue. And let’s be real—interviewing vendors or checking out venues is a serious time commitment. So in order to preserve our sanity I wanted us to create a somewhat narrow list of possibilities, investigate them, and make a choice.

What I haven’t told you yet is that we have a few friends who share our obsession. I wish I could tell you this really awesome story about how it all went down, but unfortunately it’s one of those epic inside jokes that wouldn’t really make sense…

You know how they say there is a silver lining to every cloud? Well, there were definitely plenty of rain clouds moving through on our wedding day, but one particularly awesome silver lining was that our cocktail hour was upgraded from the yard to the barn (without the fee that would have accompanied this upgrade if it were not due to weather). Shortly after a chance meeting five years ago, I moved in with Wolfman and haven't looked back since. We love music, movies, TV, and all things pop culture; we have an unspoken competition to be the first to share the latest YouTube sensation or indie song. Together, we've filled quite a few pages in our passports, but also love quiet nights in with a Game of Thrones marathon and our French Bulldog, Tonks (Harry Potter, anyone?). I'm planning a small, cozy winter wedding---think mercury glass and candle light---in the heart of DC. Our venue is a historic home with a lot of political charm, but needs a bit of work to be wedding-ready.

(…or guy friend, but I just had to give Robyn a shout out!)

This might go without saying, but being engaged has been a really romantic time for Wolfman and me. While sometimes we can lose the forest for the logistical planning trees, for the most part we’ve been able to enjoy the time and really start to look ahead to our future.

But, another relationship that has been strengthened is that between my friends and I. Not just in practical ways—helping out with some DIY, letting me borrow materials—but in the “OMG we are becoming real adults together” way.
