Mrs. Toadstool's Picture
Mrs. Toadstool, Obregon, Mexico Age and Occupation: 23, Research Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Sales Manager Engagement Date: October 1, 2011 Wedding Date: December 2012 Venue: Hacienda los Agaves About Me: I’m a born and bred Mexican girl with a severe coffee addiction, an obsession for books and an aversion for exercise. I like to plan things, so this wedding’s my dream project---I just need to remind myself from time to time that I’m the bride and not just the planner. I recently realized brown’s my favorite color as I was trying to incorporate it in every aspect of our wedding and I'm dreaming of an autumn vibe since we don’t have that around here. I’m marrying my best friend and partner in crime on the day of our nine-year anniversary! He’s an awesome, smart, fun guy who is patient, and crazy enough to spend the rest of his life with me. We’re planning our not-so-dreamy dream wedding in December in a non-traditional way and making it our own.

On an Improvised Head Piece…

November 29th, 2012 @ 1:11 pm by Mrs. Toadstool

Last week at my hair trial, Ariana, my stylist, asked if I’m wearing any kind of head piece to complement my veil. I proceeded to tell her about the “not finding anything I like at a price I’m willing to pay” dilemma. So, she started listing all the places she thought I could find something I like.

Right after the trial, I decided to visit one of the places she mentioned. While browsing the store my eyes fell on this:

It’s almost perfect (I didn’t want to wear any kind of pearls on my wedding day), almost what I was looking for, except…it’s a brooch.

Whatever—I can make it a comb, right?

I have meters and meters of wire I bought for my flowers, might as well use it. So I started twisting, trying to imitate a hair comb.

I wrapped it around the needle of the brooch.

And voila! My wedding hair piece.

I was a bit concerned about the weight, but I tried it on and left it there and even forgot I was wearing it—that’s how light it is.

The first time I put it on the wire got a bit loose (can you see it in the picture?), so I double-secured it to the needle (wrapped wire around the needle a few more times), and now it doesn’t move an inch when I put it in my hair. It holds really well and if there’s any kind of problem with it I can always use bobby pins to secure it.

I only regret I didn’t have it by the time of my hair trial so I could see the entire ensemble.

Isn’t it pretty? Would you wear a head piece that is not a head piece?

@segertlily: Congrats. You recognize the principles of thematic unity.

Toadstool, your haircomb looks gorgeous. I tried to DIY my own hair comb, and it was epic fail. I fortunately found something on Etsy that worked for me. But I totally recognize the reverse engineering of the comb part in wire!

Love love love. I’m a huge brooch fan and the pearl touch is perfect!

It looks great, the brooch is AH-MAZING. But have you thought of removing the pin part of it and simply hot glueing it to a hair comb that you already have? I would just be concerned for stability. You want to make sure it can withstand dancing and stuff!

If you want to keep the wire, just make sure the clasp of the brooch is secure so it doesn’t open, and I would maybe think about painting the wire brown so it blends in with your hair, only because you can notice it on the side. But then again, I’m very anal about that stuff, maybe it doesn’t bother you :)

@Miss Care Bear: I never thought about hot glueing it to a comb, since this was my first idea and it seemed to work. I’m anal about that kind of details too ;) but after I took this picture I rewrapped it all over again and it doesn’t move an inch (what you see in the picture is it being loose), the wire clasps the pin so it doesn’t open.
I even wore it the entire day without it moving, but you’re right dancing might add another level of difficulty to it.

This is awesome, Miss Toadstool! It looks so freaking pretty in your hair and the way the light catches it is gorgeous.
