Mrs. Armadillo's Picture
Mrs. Armadillo, Houston, Texas Age and Occupation: 23, Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Armed Security Officer Engagement Date: September 28, 2011 Wedding Date: March 2013 Venue: First Presbyterian Church/Bay City Civic Center About Me: I’m an oldies-loving, board game-playing, coffee addicted fine arts junkie from Southeast Texas in pursuit of her master’s degree in communication studies who met the goofy, strong, artistic, and unexpected love of her life in the beautiful piney woods of East Texas. Serendipity threw us together again and again (and again) on our college campus before we eventually stuck, but when we finally did submit to destiny, we hit the ground running and never looked back! We’re planning a religious, small town, budget-friendly, DIY-infused “winter becomes springtime” ceremony and reception to celebrate the beginning of our lives together with the people we love the most, and are pouring our hearts and souls into making sure our wedding represents us as a couple down to the nitty gritty details and balances tradition with the quirky individuality that is uniquely and unequivocally “us”!

I Got 99 Problems…

December 7th, 2012 @ 3:39 pm by Mrs. Armadillo

…I mean days! That’s right—The Armadillos are officially into double digits in the wedding countdown. And what better way to celebrate than to have our cake tasting, no?

This afternoon, Mr. A and I went by the one and only cake shop in town, called Party Time, to pick up flavor samples to choose what we want to have our cake taste like on the big day. I was anticipating having to sit down at the store and try each flavor, but they ended up giving us two cupcakes per flavor to take home and try at our leisure! That’s 10 cupcakes, y’all…FO FREE. Gotta love small-town businesses!

Anyway, we returned to my parents’ house with nearly a dozen cupcakes in tow, which meant everyone in the family could get it on the cake-tasting experience. For reference, here’s what we came home with:

There are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, Italian creme, and red velvet cupcakes in there! All with buttercream frosting on top.

I Got 99 Problems... : wedding cake houston Cupcakes 2 cupcakes-2

The aftermath: There’s strawberry, vanilla, Italian creme, and red velvet on that plate.

Mr. A trying the strawberry cake like a boss

Since we’re decidedly going to pick three different flavors (one flavor for each tier), I asked everyone to give me their top three favorite flavors. Here are the results:

Me: Italian creme, strawberry, red velvet

Mr. A: Italian creme, red velvet, vanilla

Mama Dillo: Italian creme, red velvet, vanilla

Papa Dillo: Red velvet, vanilla, strawberry (He didn’t like the one with “that crap in it,” i.e., the Italian creme. Ha!)

Bromadillo: Italian creme, red velvet, vanilla

Chocolate received NO LOVE. But that’s mostly because there just wasn’t anything special about it. It tasted like chocolate cake at birthdays or office parties, which wasn’t bad, but simply didn’t stand out.

I think the clear winner here was the Italian creme (even though Papa Dillo didn’t care for it much!). Since Papa Dillo’s favorite was the red velvet, we’ll do a red velvet tier as well. I’m still on the fence about the last tier…it’ll either be vanilla or strawberry. They were both so good!

What was your cake-tasting experience like? Are you choosing multiple flavors or are you going with one flavor for the entire cake? Should I pick vanilla or strawberry as our final flavor?

they all look great! If you do a third flavor, I would pick the strawberry. The contrast in colors (white, pink, red) would look nice, in my opinion…and strawberry is yummy but not as typical. We’re doing red velvet and vanilla cake w/raspberry filling. Can’t wait!

I love the idea of multiple flavors. We did three different flavors for our wedding, and aimed for things that would stand out–we had chocolate with chocolate hazelnut cream, lemon with lemon curd & lemon cream, and marble with raspberry cream. To this day (3+ months later), everyone still raves about the food and the cake.

I think people still have bad expectations about wedding cake, so the more unusual-but-yummy flavors you can get, and the more variety, the happier people are–they end up pleasantly surprised that it’s not the same old dry white cake with white cream inside.

Love those flavours! I vote vanilla for the last tier, that’s my favourite type of cake :)

Yum! We cake tasted at 4 different bakeries, it was my favorite part of planning! We haven’t decided on if we are going to do cake or cupcakes but one of our flavors is going to be pineapple with buttercream frosting with small tidbits of pineapple in it. It was soooooo delicious and will be unexpected.

MMM… all of those sound delicious!

We have a three tiered cake. The largest tier is vanilla with strawberry filling, the second is chocolate with a cookies and cream filling, and the top tier is lemon with a lemon custard filling

Weird, chocolate got no love during our tasting either (except for the gluten-free chocolate, which I thought was DIVINE!). We’re doing red velvet, strawberry, and vanilla as well: you can’t go wrong with those three! And for your final flavor, if I could eat gluten-filled cake, I would definitely go with strawberry!

@babycakes24: The strawberry is definitely one of my faves! I liked it better than the vanilla, even, and vanilla is usually my favorite cake flavor.

@ScottishMrs: @BookishBelle: Vanilla is my absolute favorite! It’s gonna be a difficult choice, for sure. We’re also doing cupcakes, though; maybe we should do the cupcakes vanilla?

@Miss Bat: I generally love chocolate cake, but this one was just so-so. It’s just as well, really; Mr. A doesn’t like what he refers to as “chocolate bread.” Haha! I’m really leaning towards the strawberry…it was seriously awesome!

omg that shirt is amazing. We actually ran into the opposite problem. Our chocolate cake was *amazzzzing* but the vanilla was very meh. I think you should go with strawberry. You just don’t get strawberry flavored cake enough these days. I will say though, cake tasting is the best part of wedding planning hands down!

@Miss Panda: Bromadillo got him that shirt for his birthday this year…he wears it like every other day, haha! And I totally agree; cake tasting has been the absolute best part of planning so far! Yum!!
