Practice Makes Perfect!

December 18th, 2012 @ 2:57 pm by Mrs. Squirrel

When it comes to cooking and baking, I’m kind of an all or nothing girl. Dinner is either a serious affair where I cook many dishes and turn my kitchen into a complete disaster…or it’s a microwavable meal straight from the freezer. I love a great meal, but after a long day at work most of the time I just don’t have the energy.

One of things I keep going back and forth with when it comes to the reception is whether we should do a “bar” of some type. I’m not talking about an alcohol bar, silly bees…that is a non-negotiable, people! I’m talking about the cute dessert/pie/cupcake/s’more/etc. bars that are showing up at so many receptions.

They are absolutely adorable, but I am having concerns about committing that kind of time to baking the week before the wedding. I have secretly been perusing bakery websites to see what kind of deal I could get (we all know sometimes swiping the card is just easier), but then I quickly realized this girl was not shelling out $500 bucks for a candy bar!

But then my planning worlds collided…

Mrs. Mongoose, New Haven, CT Age and Occupation: 28, Digital Advertising Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Business Development Engagement Date: November 19th, 2011 Wedding Date: May 2013 Venue: Hotel Nelligan in Montreal, CA About Me: I was born and raised in Queens, NY (though you would never know due to my lack of a "real" New York accent) but currently live in Connecticut with my fiance. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a crazy obsession for planning and organizing things, so it comes as no surprise that I'm currently obsessed with planning our wedding. I love dancing, music, traveling, reading fiction novels, cooking, the color blue, cupcakes, all things space science-related and TV shows created by Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams. My fiance and I have been together for seven years and are so excited to finally get married next year. We are planning a peacock-themed destination wedding in Montreal, one of our favorite cities in the world, with 100 or so of our closest family and friends. While we may look very different on the outside, we have eerily similar personalities (probably due to the fact that we share the exact same birthday) and share very similar passions. But above all else, we love each other and love to have FUN!!!

The Wedding Theme

December 18th, 2012 @ 1:26 pm by Mrs. Mongoose

The decision on our wedding “theme” wasn’t actually a planned one—it all just kind of fell into place. To start, I wanted to narrow down the colors, since that would be the unifying factor for everything from the save the dates to wedding-reception decor. I asked FH for his opinion on this…and (unsurprisingly) he looked at me like I had two heads. He was all like “The last thing I care about is a color scheme. Just please don’t make it too girly.” LOL. Clearly I should have expected that answer, but I try to involve him wherever possible since it is our wedding, after all. I’m just lucky he didn’t suggest a Green Bay Packers themed wedding since he’s such a hardcore fan!

So after thinking a bit more about non-girly colors that really felt like “us,” a teal and champagne gold color scheme was decided. Then, in searching for potential wedding themes utilizing these colors, I came across peacock feathers. And fell in LOVE. Their feathers are gorgeous with a number of jewel tones, including different shades of blue, green, brown, and gold. I also have a thing for feathers, so I thought this would be perfect.

However, doing a search on Google Images for “peacock themed weddings” turned up some…not so inspiring results. It seems that incorporating peacock feathers into a wedding theme ranges from very understated to horrific and over the top. So with not a lot of inspiration to go by, I’ve had to wing it and kind of make it up as I go along. I scoured Pinterest, Google, and Etsy and found these images for inspiration.

Eighteen Days and Counting

December 18th, 2012 @ 11:58 am by Mrs. Gloves

Welp, hive, here we are—18 days from the wedding.

Yesterday I got an email from my church letting me know that our priest has been called into service in Rome for the month of January. He’s calling around to see if there’s someone else available, but do we know any other priests? Huh.

McGlovin was on duty last night, and when he called to talk about wedding plans, he told me that he’s decided, instead of hiring a car to drive us around on our wedding day, we’re just going to ride with his sister and brother-in-law. I’ve always, always wanted a vintage car to drive us, just us, so we could have even a tiny bit of alone time, but now, 18 days before the wedding, we’ve decided to ride with his sister and brother in law. Huh.

I love to plan things, but when it comes time to execute the plans, I tend to panic. My friends tell me that I remind them of a mix between a cartoon character and a Disney Princess. Mr. Blue Whale and I are Southerners at heart, but we’ve been transplanted to the East Coast for school. We both love barbecues, star-gazing, bonfires, music, making up nonsense words, and generally being silly. Our wedding will be a fun-filled destination wedding in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It will most certainly feature bright colors, '80s music, and glitter.

Sharing Christmas

December 18th, 2012 @ 10:35 am by Mrs. Blue Whale

It’s an issue most couples have to deal with, regardless of your religious beliefs. How do you decide whose family to visit during which holidays?

Sharing Christmas : wedding college park family A Muppe1 a-muppe

How I envision my family :) (Image from Cinematoria and A Muppet Family Christmas)

Two years ago, I spent my first Christmas with Mr. Whale and away from my family. Last year, we reverted to our old ways and each spent Christmas with our families. But now that we’re officially committed to each other for forever and ever, we don’t want to spend holidays apart ever again. That means coming up with some sort of reasonable plan for the holidays (mostly Thanksgiving and Christmas). But what exactly does “reasonable” mean?

Guest List: Narrowing It Down

December 18th, 2012 @ 8:34 am by Mrs. Mongoose

The guest list was the bane of my existence for quite some time. FH has a pretty small family, so even though we invited nearly all of his immediate and extended family, they still barely made a dent in the list. As for our friends, they made up about 30% of the list. My family on the other hand is enormous, so figuring out who to invite (without hurting feelings) was a monumental task to undertake.

Once Upon a Time: The Little Details

December 18th, 2012 @ 7:36 am by Mrs. Sword

My last post revealed our beautiful invitations so in this post I want to show you what we added to make them even more personal!

I was really psyched about how nice the invites looked, but for those receiving them in Minnesota (without a rehearsal dinner invite) I knew they would be opening their envelope to just one item. And it looked a bit bare. I wasn’t sure what they needed, but after viewing so many cute additions from other Bee’s invites, I knew they needed a little something extra.

Miss Lyre added lace, Mrs. Treasure added envelope liners of our fair city, Mrs. Candy Apple added twine and a little Moo Card, and these are just a few of the awesome additions out there!

One day, while browsing Jo Ann’s I found these stickers for ONE dollar per pack! Jackpot right? They highlight my obsession with quotes, and compliment our word-named tables at the wedding.

My next step was to find ribbon to make a sort of belly band around the invitation. I took Mr. Sword with me this time and we bought a lot of ribbon!

A Lazy Ladies Weekend

December 18th, 2012 @ 6:49 am by Mrs. Lyre

A few weeks back, I had my bachelorette party. While some girls dream of dressing up in fancy night clothes and having a night on the town drinking and dancing, this idea is far from appealing to me. All I wanted for my bachelorette party was to spend a weekend with my favorite ladies, in a house in the mountains by a lake, just relaxing. Good friends, good food, good times. This was all I requested, and my MOH and bridesmaids did not disappoint.

The first weekend of December, 15 ladies traveled from Miami, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and the surrounding areas to the Poconos to spend a relaxing bachelorette weekend with me. It was everything I wanted, and I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. We spent most of the weekend laying about in our comfy clothes & PJs, eating and drinking, chatting and catching up on all of our lives. We did make a day trip to the outlet shops to get out of the house for a bit, and paid homage to all bachelorette parties by watching Magic Mike.

We had gorgeous snowy scenes like this to wake up to in the morning:

Although my day job is in cubicle land, I'm happiest in the modern art wing of a museum, having recently earned my Masters in Museum Studies. Shortly after a chance meeting five years ago, I moved in with Wolfman and haven't looked back since. We love music, movies, TV, and all things pop culture; we have an unspoken competition to be the first to share the latest YouTube sensation or indie song. Together, we've filled quite a few pages in our passports, but also love quiet nights in with a Game of Thrones marathon and our French Bulldog, Tonks (Harry Potter, anyone?). I'm planning a small, cozy winter wedding---think mercury glass and candle light---in the heart of DC. Our venue is a historic home with a lot of political charm, but needs a bit of work to be wedding-ready.

Makeup Trial

December 18th, 2012 @ 5:15 am by Mrs. Gray Wolf

Last Saturday, I met up with Melissa for my makeup trial. If you remember, I’d worked with her in a previous wedding, and had ideas for bold eyes and lips for the big day.

First, the dreaded “before” shot, because I love you all:

Oof. Ignore my Hermione hair as well.

I told her that I wanted it to be obvious that I was at a formal, evening event. She said that sometimes she works with brides that are somewhat timid about makeup…but I told her to bring it on.
