A Change of Color

December 26th, 2012 @ 2:41 pm by Mrs. Squirrel

Yellow is my favorite color.

Check me out over the years…always rocking yellow. Also, so it appears, always drinking :) All photos personal.

For as long as I can remember, yellow has always been my go-to. Although many women may disagree, I think so many people look GREAT in yellow! (Especially blondes!) My girl Ali Fedotowsky is on the same page:

As I daydreamed about my wedding over the years, it was almost a no brainer…yellow would be a central theme to my wedding and my bridesmaids would most certainly be wearing it. Being the huge dorks that we are, my sisters and I would share our wedding visions when we were bored (what better way to pass a long car rides?). As I excitedly rambled about the yellow dresses, my four beautiful blonde sisters replied, ” Really? Yellow? You just want to make us look ugly so that you’ll look better!”

Ouch.

And since these conversations happened before anyone was actually engaged, no one felt bad being brutally honest and telling me exactly what they thought. To be fair, I’m sure I shot down many of my sisters’ visions as well.

When Mr. Squirrel and I got engaged, I seriously did consider using yellow for a wedding color. I had always loved it. Yellow is bright, happy, and fun. Exactly the emotions I wanted to elicit at my wedding. But…as I looked at my overall wedding vision, I realized yellow was maybe a little too bright, and did not capture the romantic, whimsical feel I was going for. I looked at many inspiration pictures that showed weddings that were whimsical but had an overall theme of vintage or shabby chic. I was having a hard time getting excited about the muted colors that went along with these.

I realized it was the colors in this picture that really jumped out to me:

They were woodsy and elegant, yet still bright.

Then I stumbled upon, this beauty and I was sold. Who needs yellow when my bridesmaids could look this good?

For those astute readers, I already gave you a sneak peak of this pic in my bridesmaids boxes. Coral mismatched bridesmaid dresses. I absolutely love how the ladies look together. Coral looks great on blondes and brunettes, as well as fair and dark skin tones. It is a perfect bridesmaid dress color. Deciding on the color was hard enough, I knew from the begining I was going to let the ladies pick out their own dress. I gave them a few requirements, sent a paint chip with about 5 shades of coral and let them have at it.

So far, so good! Six of the nine have their dresses and they each look gorgeous!

Now I want to be very clear about something. Our wedding is not a “Coral Wedding.” Yes, the ladies are wearing coral, but that is just a small component. I wanted to complement the coral with other colors that would work effortlessly with the theme. Honestly, as soon as coral was locked in, it was easy to pick out the other colors. The full palate of the wedding will be:

Moss, Coral, and Gold

What do you think? How did your wedding colors evolve? Did you start with a theme to inspire your color choice, or did your color choice inspire your theme?

Your colors are GORGEOUS: I love how they complement each other, and as one of those girls who is convinced they look terrible in yellow, I’m sure you did your BM’s a favor ;)

Soooo chic and modern. Love it!
My color fixation has changed also. I was obsessed with turquoise for years. All the accessories in my house are turquoise, people always gave me turquoise stuff, etc.
Then I got a champagne colored dress and everything changed to magenta, silver, champagne and green!

I also love the coral! And yellow is my favorite color!! I always dreamed of a yellow wedding but then we picked a venue that had other special meaning to us but is covered in gold. I realized my yellow gray scheme was never going to work. We’ll have lots of yellow wearing in the future… A yellow nursery perhaps? :-)

Love your colors!!
I wanted my bridesmaids to wear yellow as well because it is the main color in my wedding, but after one person made a face at the idea, I have the girls wearing my secondary color, navy

First off, I want to say again I LOVE coral. It is my accent wedding color and I now have a wardrobe full of coral and my FI bought coral towels I fell in love with for Christmas :) While yellow is a beautiful color, I agree its not for everything. I have light skin and dark brown hair and yellow makes me look really washed out but coral does look great on everyone!!

My colors did evolve A LOT. My favorite color has always been pink so my original colors were light pink and mint green, I ended up switching that to an aqua-ish blue. Then I choose a venue that had deep golds, chandelier’s etc. and decided that the colors were to bright and clashed with the space so I decided on navy and coral which matches beautifully with the gold!

As a pale-skinned blonde I’ve only just found yellow clothes that work on me, but it does look great on you! I was in a wedding and wore yellow, when I told my mom, she was like, “You? Yellow? Ick.” haha I think your moss, gold, and coral palette is gorgeous.

LOVE all those colors – throughout planning, coral became one of my new favorite colors, and I totally would have incorporated it more/in a different way if I could have!!

My colors were peach, coral, a shade of green, and gold. Then I fell for a wisteria bridesmaids dress and had a color crisis! Now we’ve decided to just ADD wisteria. :)
Still I am a little sad over my lost coral bridesmaids vision.

As someone whose color palette’s on its fifth evolution, I can totally understand where you’re coming from. It’s hard relinquishing a vision we’ve had forever, but oh so satisfying when we figure out a solution!! LOVE your new color palette – I think it will be perfect for what you have in mind!

It’s funny – I too originally had my heart set on yellow bridesmaid dresses. As you said, “Yellow is bright, happy, and fun. Exactly the emotions I wanted to elicit at my wedding.” And then, one of my bridesmaids – a very dear friend who also happens to be my fiance’s sister in law – without knowing what I had in mind, cheerfully announced she would be happy to wear whatever I put her in as long as it wasn’t yellow.

I know, right? So my vision went from: yellow&gray to yellow&green to green&orange to green&navy to cobalt&red&orange. I think we’ve finally found a palette that sticks! Phew!
