Workin’ on My Fitness: Exercise

I’ve luckily never had serious struggles with my weight. Growing up, my parents put me in all kinds of activities from swimming and track & field to numerous dance classes like ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and even gymnastics, which kept me in serious shape for the majority of my life. But now that I’m over 25, that metabolism that was SO good to me all those years has started to slow down and all of a sudden; I can no longer eat cupcakes, Sour Powers, and Doritos whenever I want (if only I had a time machine…).

So with the wedding coming up, I suddenly had a tangible goal to strive toward—I’m not necessarily trying to lose a ton of weight, BUT I do want to look and feel amazing on my wedding day. Oh, and I want Michelle Obama arms in my pictures. So here are the workouts I’m currently doing to get myself in shape.

I LOVE to dance, so naturally when Zumba came on the scene, I was all about it. It’s a fantastic workout and, according to my Fitbit, I burn anywhere from 350–500 calories per hour-long class. The key is to find a really good instructor who 1) can actually dance and 2) keeps the energy level up and the music fresh.

I can’t say I love to run, but there is something so incredibly stamina-building about running that it’s hard to not make it part of any serious workout regime. I just make sure that I blast some motivating tunes while I run. (For me, Girl Talk is my artist of choice. His amazing mash-ups keep me pumped and running FAR longer than I normally can.) Oh, and when I really have no energy, I just pretend I’m in an episode of The Walking Dead getting chased by zombies. It sounds crazy, but you wouldn’t believe how motivating this can actually be!

I haven’t started the official 90-day program of P90X yet, as it calls for a six-day-a-week workout schedule, but I do try to pop in the DVDs a few times a week. All the workouts are intense, but I particularly like the strength-training workouts (since I’ve got cardio covered with Zumba and running). I do plan on doing the full program soon—it’s a three-month commitment, so I’m thinking I will start this three months before the wedding. It’s tough as hell, but the results are undeniable. I know a number of people who have done this program and they looked incredible afterward. (FH did it for 60 days a few years ago and he got buff!)

I have a friend who swears by P90X and had fantastic results.
I do a combo of running, the gym (cardio and weights) and hot/power yoga 2-3 x a week (good for lengthening and strengthening muscles, not to mention the stress relieving benefits!).

I love Body Pump and Spin. I don’t love to run either but I do it. I’m in my best shape when I run consistently so it’s a must for me. I think the wedding pressure is on so exercise is key for me right now. I need to get my arms as toned as possible so I’m doing strength training. Michelle Obama does have some amazing guns!

I have been trying to loose a little weight before our wedding. Not because I am overweight (in fact, like you I have never struggled much with my weight but did put a few extra pounds on in my later college years when I haven’t bothered to shed the 2 years since graduation) but mostly because we ordered my dress a size 4 which is actually to big in my hips but was SUPER tight in my waist (and I had a soft little pooch I wanted to get rid of). I have been SOOO proud of myself for getting my flat stomach back and my dress looks AWESOME and I actually need it taken in a little.. I have mostly been focusing on diet (I still hadn’t given up the cupcakes and doritos LOL I have these past few months though) but I have been doing zumba 3 times a week and some at home exercises (a few dvd’s here and there or just crunches, pushups, using some small weights for my arms). While I have only lost about 6 pounds (like I said, I don’t have a ton to lose.. I am 5’5” and went from 131 to 125 I feel healthier and much better (and my skin is clearing up!) now that I am exercising and eating better!

I just started the Zumba fitness 2 on the Wii. I think joining a physical class might be more beneficial because you’re able to talk to the instructor, feel motivated with the people around you, and make potential friends! But I can’t afford a gym membership yet so I have to stick with the Wii. I also lift 5 lb weights every morning to tone my arms and legs–I think every woman in America envies Michelle’s arms!! Eating right is most important to me though. Whole grains, protein, fiber and lots of water= feeling great every day for me.
P90X is also a FANTASTIC way to get in shape! I would recommend it to anyone!

I want to lose 30 pounds before the wedding, I’ve lot 7 of those pounds so far. It’s coming off very slowly, I’ve been trying to lose the weight long before we got engaged and now it’s more serious. I work out 5 days a week (M-F morning at 5:30a) 3 days a week I’ve been doing HIT on the treadmill and weight lifting and 2 days a week I’ve been biking for 60 minutes. I’ll need to mix it up soon, I have to go the gym or else I stop doing it and when I do workouts at home I don’t push myself like I do at the gym.

I LOVE running and group exercise classes. I keep in the best shape from doing boot camp – 4 days a week of intense exercise with the same group of motivated people, who hold me accountable. They text me and Facebook me to guilt me if I don’t come…pretty good motivation! Haha. I hope you get Michelle arms for your wedding – it sounds like you have a great routine :)

just got back from my first spin class of the year (after a long gym hiatus month of december….oops!) My “schedule” is mon zumba or intensati, wed pilates, thurs spin, fri or sat elliptical or treadmill and then kettlebell or spin on sunday

I love classes but its hard to get FH into some of them – he does really like spinning though so that has become a bigger part of our workouts bc its great cardio and having a gym buddy is HUGE for me

@babycakes24: @Brooklyn55: @jbarker09: @Mrs. Wallaby: Sounds like you gals have some great routines going. The hardest part for me is getting motivated!

@tea: This is amazing, thank you for sharing! I’m going to d/l this :)

@hisluckygirl22: Zumba is definitely a type of workout that’s best to do in a class with others–it’s so much for fun that way. I think the Wii workout is a good supplement to going to classes.

@littlemisshostess: Sounds like you’ve got a great schedule lined up–hopefully FH decides to join you for some :)

My dream is to have stellar arms, too. I usually say “Lara Croft” or “Katniss Everdeen” as my inspiration, but I would be just as pleased with First Lady arms. I don’t know why I’m so fixated on my arms, but it’s like an obsession. I spend a lot of time playing with them in the mirror Lol.

Weddings are interesting avenues for fitness. It’s probably one of the best causes that start people off dieting and exercising. A quest for weight loss often begins with vanity, but with a push to the right direction and a few lessons on perspective, people realize how important it is to stay fit and healthy even after the big event.
